    Fried biscuits were good.
    Carissa G.

Let me begin by saying that I have walked, rode, biked, past this spot for several years. Always been curious but there are so many spots that I trust to get chicken-fish-seafood that they never pulled me in. So what changed? COVID, a promise to myself to support local and black owned business and a GRUBHUB giftcard, and friend of mine who lives in Aurora ordered from the one near her and I liked what I tasted. I decided to finally give them a chance. Sometimes things happen for a reason and I should have took the signs. Everything was off and I was disappointed that I spent my gift card and more buying this meal. Details....... Fish and Shrimp Combo: I asked for both to be grilled, only the fish was grilled. Fried shrimp were just ok, the grilled fish was absolutely delish! Wish they would have put more in the order. Eight Wings, 1 lb. Fish and Fries: I could get better wings at KFC or Uncle Remus. They were ok. Fries were not good at all. No seasoning and for some reason, the food was hot but the fries were cold. Fried Whiting: Good crisp on the breading BUT NO SEASONING whatsoever!!!!! I had to add so much hot sauce just to eat it. Fried Catfish: Seasoned well in a cornmeal breading. Very good! Banana Pudding/Peach Cobbler: Ordered but was told at the last minute TWICE that they had no desserts. They were also out of lobster and I was informed after I placed order and waited. Henny Jerk Sauce: 1.75 for a SMALLLLLLLLL cup. It was ok but not worth the markup. Literally it was about two tablespoons of sauce for almost 2 bucks! Fried Green Tomatoes: Best part of the meal! Hot, tart and season well. I would order these again The service was good and they were apologetic about the order mixups for I would like for them to be consistent between their different locations. I may try some different items and update my review.

Kale Spinach Bowl was my favorite, although it comes with choice of grilled chicken, shrimp, or fish...I chose all veggies. It was delicious!

The price for this basic ass food that was cold and not tasty. I paid $16 for a shrimp Po that had mostly bread and tomatoes. This hole in the wall gave us old fries with old grease that tasted funny. When I called to tell them my food was cold and old tasting they responded everything is made fresh to order. But I find that impossible because the food wasn't ewarm to the touch at all.

I bought the fried lobster dinner which is about $20.00 and this is what I get. I called back and was told that the lobsters are all 6 ounces. This small lobster is definitely not worth my $20

This restaurant will never get my business again. The food quality and service is HORRIBLE. The site doesnt tell u the lobster snd shrimp sandwich is fried. the lobster was a rubber band and the shrimp was cold inside. The fries were cold and some not even cooked. oh and the biscuits.... GROSS. A greasy margarine tasting bread. i called for a refund and they told me no because I used the App. Who cares, its your restaurant. A waste of delivery, a waste of money and a waste of time. not to mention the poor excuse for customer service if you call in. NEVER AGAIN!!!!

I was so disappointed because I wanted to support this business. However, I placed my order for yams and macaroni I was told my order would be bought to me. I waited and had to go back in for my order. That wasn't the problem when I went in I seen a gentleman putting my order in the microwave. You're charging 6.99 for small portions and food that is not fresh!! The macaroni was horrible I didn't even see cheese. The yams were okay however, it's unacceptable for a restaurant to warm up food in the microwave.

Saw a sign for FRIED LOBSTER when driving to our hotel the other night and just had to stop by. They were super nice and let us take our time with the menu. They let us know about their special (Soulfood Sunday) and made some chitchat (us being our first time and out of town). They said it'd be about 15mins for our meal which was fine, atleast there was seating. They brought us some of the fried biscuits and no charge and they were awesome! By the time the food came it was hot, fresh (made from scratch) and SUPER flavoured. No blandness here. The lobster was juicy and pretty big chunks. Definitely a spot to checkout :)

Oh lucky day! I just happened to pass this location on my way to take my mother to physical therapy. When I first saw the sign I thought I had to be dreaming but when I turned around and went back past it, I realized it wasn't a mirage. And I must admit I got very happy. Having heard about this place and their wonderful food, I said I had to try them. Unfortunately I hadn't gotten the time to go to their other location in the Austin neighborhood, even though its not that far from me. When I saw this location I said I had to try it, but it was not open yet. So I ended up going someplace else to grab something to eat, I was too famished to wait. I did return though and tried the fried green tomatoes, and they were delicious. I am looking forward to my mothers next appointment with the physical therapist so that I can try some more of their delicious food. I will definitely do an update when I get to try more from their menu. They have gotten off to a great start with me, because I absolutely love fried green tomatoes, and even more when its done right.

Chicken, mac and cheese and greens from their Soul Food Sunday
    Alyssa S.

I've gone to Surf's up many times for their fish, chicken and shrimp. I really like the fried biscuits. They've posted pics in Instagram of their Soul Food Sunday items so I decided to check them out since I didn't feel like cooking. This Sunday they had Cornish hens, baked chicken, fried chicken and the sides were candied yams, greens, mac and cheese and dirty rice. They were out of dressing. You get your meat and 3 sides so I got chicken wings and greens and since I had a taste for mac and cheese and I didnt want rice or yams so I got a double order of that. The wings and greens were good. The greens had a lot of smoked meat in them (so if you are a vegetarian and think you're just getting greens, that is not the case here). The mac and cheese was not that great. Could have been cheesier in my opinion. Nothing to break your neck over.. The people working there were very nice so I'll be back. I just may try the baked chicken and dirty rice next time or just stick to the fish, shrimp or chicken wings.

    What I got

Shirmp and grits the picture was misleading and to think I chased this meal for 3 weeks on end all to be told they didn't have the full ingredients, today he was hesitant (I should have followed my first mind) Shirmp not tender at all my grits weren't flavorful. Top was full of black pepper

My first time coming here and I was impressed with the food. They allow you to sample the food to see if you like it. Which is a bonus to sample before you make your decision to purchase. I ordered the fish fillets which was very delicious and well seasoned Golden crispy and fried well. My sides were the cabbage and beef spaghetti. The cabbage was well seasoned as well. The spaghetti had a funny tasting season that I didn't like. Nice size portion of food for a reasonable price. FYI. No dining area. Order to go only

It was very cozy, not a lot of space and nowhere to dine in, so expect to take the meal to go. Cashier was pleasant and friendly. Everything I wanted was sold out at 5 pm. I settled for the smothered pork chops, Mac and cheese and dressing. Food is packed right in front of you and they are very generous with the portions. My "plate" (styrofoam container) was so heavy it cracked! I was given a second bag to catch spillage. I commented that this would be dinner and probably lunch tomorrow. The cashier and serving gentleman chuckled and agreed. I saw the passion tea and ordered that also. Now, the taste. The pork chops are delicious. Gravy is good, meat is tender and not too salty. They're good size chops, I didn't finish one. Max and cheese is very cheesy. Well seasoned and noodles are firm and not mushy. The dressing is not it for me. It's a little "mealy" and not much flavor. I can taste the sage but it feels undercooked to me. The cornbread muffin is okay. Not as sweet as jiffy mix, but too sweet to be hot water cornbread. I will return and try some other sides. Prayerfully next time they'll have the turkey wings or fried ribs I wanted to try. However the gravy from the pork chops on some mashed potatoes would be heavenly.

The food was good, but a little bit on the expensive side. We ordered three one entree plates. They came with two sides and a muffin. My wife and son both ordered their fried chicken entree with Mac & cheese and yams, and I ordered their smothered pork chops with yams and collard greens. The fried chicken was good, Mac and cheese was ok, collard greens weren't the greatest. The yams were delicious and the smothered pork chops definitely hit the spot. The food overall was seasoned well, not under seasoned and most importantly not over seasoned. The gravy was really good and the pork chops were cooked perfectly. We also ordered their banana pudding. This one was just ok. Not sure if I'd order it again. We wanted peach cobbler but they were out. Next time we'll order that if it's available. I chosen the $21.99 meal which is one entree, 3 sides and a dessert. Not bad, right? I waited about 5 minutes before my meal was packaged and handed to me. Should've taken that as a sign. Especially for soul food. Chicken and gravy - decent. The gravy was thick and tasty. Not salty thank the heavens. My issue with the entree was that you could tell the chicken had been sitting in the gravy too long. The crispiness was gone. Corn muffin was basic and small. Nothing special or out of the ordinary. The yams were an absolute no. Definitely canned yams made with no love. same for the collards. The Mac and cheese was alright but it reminds of of the Mac and cheese they serve as the kids table. Overall, for $24.39, the meal fell flat. The peace cobbler held together real well. While I enjoyed popping my head in, I will not be back.

Seeing that Shake A Leg was not that far from where I live, I decided to drop in to check them out. I ordered catfish with sweet potatoes and macaroni and cheese. I give them high marks for the catfish. It was nicely seasoned and breaded enough to give a crust but not too much that it took away from the meatiness of the fish. Big ups on the crisp to the crust. The sides were perfect, which again I say they deserve high marks. The highlight dish for me was the Cajun pasta that I ordered with shrimp. This reminded me of the same that I enjoyed in Louisiana. There was the right amount of sauce so that the pasta was not drowning in it. The seasoning was neither salty nor overpowering nor all over the place. Plenty room for seating and spread out enough that people are not all on top of each other. I got there early, so it had not packed out as I'm sure it does later in the day. For nights that I don't want to cook, they may get my dollars. The food was certainly worth it.

But it's another when you see the potential which is why I slight don't want to do it for the Yelp Came in @ 5:15pm expecting to dine in only to be told you can't eat in...why all the tables? Ordered 4 meals at 5:30pm .... 7:00 pm I finally walked out with my food. (Total of 4 other customers during my time there. 1 was already there when I got there and two seemed to have placed their order on the phone as they barely waited and 1 was a grub hub pickup* (* Grub hub pickup person was super piss pacing back and forth in front of the restaurant. Time = money) Presentation! Things I don't want to see when I come to a restaurant. A can of HOT SHOOT in the "non-dinning" room area, Your hair in a Bonnet like you just got out of bed, Food items on the floor (in this case vanilla wafers and onions and a few other items), items thrown on the tables (for the "non-dinning" room area) I had a $25 restaurant.com certificate. (Which is a story in itself) I sometimes I hate using them cause I always get that feeling most of the restaurants don't want to honor it. (why the heck do you sign up for it?) After giving Tiyana the code and ringing up the food it took an additional 6-8 min before actually processing the card. Not sure if it was because she didn't believe the price after or needed a confirmation about the actual certificate . it was never explained just long silent waiting.... *cricket* I added my food up through the groupon app before even ordering and according to that price I was charged about 30 cent more. I wasn't going to argue over that and left it alone. FRIED CHICKEN DARK - 8.99 - It was good. SMOTHERED CHICKEN DARK - 10.99 tasted like a different batch of chicken from the fried chicken as it tasted more burnt/dried out it was slightly cold (only took about 15min to get home + the 10 before actually getting my food at the end ) JERK CHICKEN - $16 for 4 wings??? I get that it's a "dinner" as you can order 10 wings for the exact same $16. but basic math your charge $6 for two small sides So the other $10 is for 4 WINGS! Another odd comparison is that regular four wing dinner cost $12. Jerk seasoning cost $4? Flavor was excellent and seasoned well. Expected large Jerk Wings for the price, something similar to Montego Bay in Bellwood. SMOTHERED PORK CHOPS - $10 thin cut, but for the price I guess I expected that ) the meet was a little dry and overdone but again I take it due to the thin cut of meat as you don't have a lot of room for error and need to make sure the meat is done. SIDES Jerk Mac Cheese - Fire! The only unique thing you'll get hear in regards to not being on a nearby restaurant menu. It's a handful of items with Jerk in it. Jerk Pizza Puff, Tacos, Nachos, Burritos, Jerk Chicken omelette Sweet potatoes. - probably the closet to my moms recipe that I have ever tried. (Diabetics be warned!) Greens - the only thing I didn't personally try myself, but was told after throwing some vinegar and hot sauce on them, they thought they were good. Regular Mac and cheese. - it's alright compared to the jerk version. Dressing - literally don't even remember. I ate it but flavor wise I've had better. Tiyana was nice and I notice more smiles at the end . I know black folks get that "mean" typecast do to RBF (Resting itch Face) as I was questioning it myself. However at the end I know she'a putting the food out in hopes you really like it and would come back. She also gave me a coupon book for the restaurant. (Some of it is to be questioned. Such as refer 20 people and get 7 free meals.) and two key chains which got destroyed as the heat from the bag made the paper material in between the key chain wet. It's like I see the effort and hard work and not trying to knock what Tiyana is doing Notice the one year anniversary menu (All you can eat buy one for $18.99 and get 2nd meal for $0.01) I like everything is cooked from scratch. I understand the whole "call your order in advance" reply I'll probably get, but I waited 90 min! The place wasn't dirty but too cluttered with items on the table etc. Not sure if going through remolding, but the photos I seen on Maywood Village Press showing the dinning room area is nothing like what I seen when I got there. I felt Tiyana attire was more like see your sister on thanksgiving morning putting the turkey in the oven before everyone gets up and not I'm the business owner/chef. This is one of those reviews where despite the low rating I hope people give it a chance and able to see visible improvements. As a person that almost never order delivery. We arrived and the parking lot was full but I squeezed into a street spot. The line was too the door but they were moving pretty fast. The decor is outdated but that's not what you come for. Loved the history reflected with the photos of customers including former President Obama, current Governor Pritzker and Mayor Johnson. The photos of Jesse Jackson before and after his health deteriorated shows the legacy of this community bedrock. There's also a spot to donate books. This place has changed so have realistic expectations. It is cafeteria style (to go) but you can sit down and eat from your styrofoam container. First the online menu was wrong. We were told that they don't have fish on Sundays. Honestly if I knew that beforehand I wouldn't have gone that day. I decided to get fried chicken, greens and dressing with a side of mac and cheese. The chicken was dry, the greens were a lil salty and the dressing was dry but tasty. I wish i had gotten the gravy on the side. The macaroni and cheese was yummy. My guy got the short ribs, greens and string beans. Like the greens the short ribs were a lil salty. The ribs were cooked to perfection. The meat fell off the bone and melted in your mouth. Overall, I would say try it for yourself. If you like things on the salty side this might be ideal. The meals come with a muffin. It was sweet and so soft that it fell apart in your hands. Please note that individual sides are $3.04 with tax which isn't too bad. You also only get one muffin nit two like the website says. I plan to return on a fish day but it probably won't be soon. I'm optimistic that they will make some changes and update the website.
