I wanted some catfish & there you were Surfs Up! I felt very welcome when I walked in. The smell was so intoxicating & I just knew my catfish fix was about to be cured. I ordered a catfish dinner & a jr catfish for my son. They gave me a sample of greens. I drove home happy that I got my catfish. I got home & took that first bite & I could taste the spicy & crunchy batter on that flaky fish. The fries had a garlic dusting on them & those greens (oh glorious greens) we're fantastic!! I came here about a year and half ago and bought a pound of fried shrimp and man were they delicious? I went back a few days ago and was very disappointed. The shrimp were no where near the way the were the last time I visited. The batter was falling off the shrimp each bit, they were a bit undercooked, and extremely overpriced. If you're looking for decent Cajun food in the area this is definitely the place to be. Had the catfish, lobster, biscuits and shrimp. Everything is cooked to order so you know it's fresh (it tastes fresh too.) The prices are very fair. Surfs Up recently opened up in my neighborhood on North Ave. in Oak Park. I passed by a few times and seen many smiling faces. My neighbors told us they went for lunch and had delicious fish tacos. My wife and I decided to walk to the restaurant for lunch being that we live relatively close. As we approached the restaurant we were welcomed by a couple employees who were out front. We were assured that we would have a delicious lunch. As we walked in the environment was clean and friendly. Undecided to have the fish tacos and my wife had the fried shrimp. We also tried the hot wings. I must say EVERYTHING was delicious. The service and employees were fantastic people. As we were leaving we met the owner who took a minute to say hello and ask if everything was good. I told the owner my wife and I would be regular customers. Hmmmm where should I start? I had heard things about this place in the past, and happened to be passing by so I decided to stop in to try it out. When I first walked in, I noticed tons of colors and what seemed to look like a pretty interesting place. I arrived about an hour before closing, and really wanted to some fried fish. When I asked about the fish I was quickly told that they were out of fish to fry and that I would have to order something else. Now for a place called surf's up I would assume that fish would always be an available item, but I guess not. I saw that catfish nuggets were on the menu as well and figured I'd see if they were out of that too. The cook told me that they had enough for one order, and I agreed to take it. I sat down at a table and waited for the food to be prepared. I quickly noticed some things that threw me off. The cook was grabbing things with his bare hands and then touching all numerous things within the kitchen O_o. Hungry, I decided to ignore it and pretend like I had never seen it. I checked in on Yelp at which point I saw that there was an offered for 2 free wings with your first purchase. I brought it up to the counter at which point the cashier yelled to his coworkers asking what it was that I was showing. The cook looked at it and rolled his eyes using the excuse that he didn't have access to the owner to be able to redeem the coupon. (Right..doesn't make sense to me either but I just said oh well and waited for the food) About 15 minutes later the food was ready and I was on my way. I took a quick peek at the food, and it looked pretty decent. As I began to eat it I was kind of disappointed. The fries were soggy and seemed undercooked. The fish was fried soft, which I'm sure could be a quick fix, but nonetheless I had never had it that way. Overall it wasn't terrible, but it wasn't great. I'll probably just stick to J&J's or Sharks or one of the other chain places like that haha read more

I am originally from Ky and reside in Hoffman Estates. A former supervisor and I stopped at the location in Oak Park some time ago. We loved it! It ended up closing but little did I know.. they moved it to the Roosevelt Location. I love them and this is the ONLY place I would travel to get my fish, shrimp, etc! Wonderful experience while visiting from MS. Chose to go to Surf's Up after helping to complete an earlier pick-up order for family/friends gathering. Chose here over a more expensive restaurant option. The wings were amazing and the service was even better. The cashier Gabby, was very helpful, honest and polite. Gabby had a great personality, which made it feel as though I was a long time frequent customer on my first visit. There was a variety of foods, but I could not try them all. I must say this after reading the reviews this place was sounding great and that all c crashing down when I stepped inside. Let's start with the ambiance. It was ridiculous. Music so loud my fillings hurt. Workers cursing at each other and not worrying who hears what they say. The food was cooked in old oil as the container had this pooled sludge on the bottom. My cars oil change looked cleaner then that. And it was over cooked. I asked what type of lobster they used. One employee told me Maine lobster tails and another told me slipper lobster tails. After doing some research I am guessing it was the slipper lobster. As the price difference is night and day. And so is the taste. Slipper lobster tastes just like its name like a slipper. I will never step foot in this place because just like the others here I had a groupon and they refused it. These folks better get their act together because I don't care how many location you have you will collapse very hard. I give the food and the entire place 4 thumbs down. read more

The restaurant staff was onsite for a Fooda event and was very conversational amongst themselves so much that they didn't take my order but took orders behind me in line. My friend and I ordered from Surfs Up in Maywood and we were so disappointed. We waited over an hour for the delivery only to find that the driver went to the wrong address. The food was overpriced, the shrimp were fried too hard and barely warm. The greens were good but the thin slice of cornbread fell apart when I took it out of the bag. Don't even get me started on the pathetic onion rings!!!! I won't call the restaurant to complain bcuz they might offer me more of their garbage for free or at a reduced price which I would absolutely refuse. DO NOT BOTHER!!!! Horrible customer service and disrespectful staff. I had purchased a Groupon to support this BOB and I thought I had purchased it for a different location near my home. I called the nearby Chicago location to find out it was for the Maywood location. I called that location and they said I could not order over the phone because of the Groupon (the Groupon states you can) and after I drove almost 45 minutes to this location I had my phone open and Groupon out and the rude/nasty lady said they are not honoring the Groupon. There were no signs that they were not honoring Groupon and when I opened the phone to have the Groupon ready I was offered to buy the Groupon for Surf's up again. So not honoring the Groupon was BS. She was telling me some story about the owner and Groupon but did not want my business. I had planned on ordering additional items beyond the Groupon offering but she was so harsh and disrespectful for me just being there with the Groupon that I could only walk out. She did not try to save my business or even explain the Groupon Issue for it was already paid for.The Surf's owner never contacted Groupon about the not accepting the Groupon for them to contact the buyers. They just scream at you like you did something wrong and who cares. Very bad service.The place should just CLOSE. read more

I first tried Surf's up when they were located on Austin in Chicago. The portions were generous and the food was cooked fresh to order. I have since ordered from Surf's up in Maywood twice and I was not a huge fan of the portions and the food wasn't made fresh to order. Our shrimp were cold and the portions for the price left me unsatisfied. I did not like the hot wings at all, they were extremely salty and cut in a weird way (I am not sure what that was about).The staff is very friendly and the restaurant is clean and they offer free coffee and tea. I will continue to order the grilled shrimp on occasion, but will make sure to ask for fresh and hot shrimp. read more

And couldn't believe how the manager/owner showered one female Customer and her friend with Lobster samples, fried green tomatoes, dirty rice and a bottle of water all for free. He kept running back and forth offering her things. Meanwhile, I'm sitting there in the same restaurant and wasn't offered A THING. It was her and her friend and my friend and I, so it wasn't a restaurant full of people to please. To add injury to insult I waited 35 mins for 2 fish and chicken combos and an order of shrimp because the cooks were back there frying lobster for a customer who came in after me, ate all this food, got her food and left before me. It was so blatantly bad customer service that her friend asked us... Have you been here before? Looking bewildered thinking we'd received this treatment before why else were we being ignored. I replied no. She was in shock and said WOW! She asked what is he up to? I don't know what he was on but I have a very good idea... Nice looking woman, long hair don't care, nice figure. This place is the worst.I went in today for a 3 piece and an 8 piece,both of which I paid too much for.The cashier had a horrible attitude.I looked past that.I know it's supposed to be made to order,but with no other patrons there,i shouldn't have to wait 50 minutes for what I was originally told would be a 20 minute wait.the table and window were both dirty.When I asked for lemon pepper they said no but we have our own seasoning.I said ok that I'd try that.She didn't sprinkle any of the seasoning on and when I got home(5 minutes away by car) I also discovered my food was cold and it tasted like old grease.I won't ever visit this expensive,nasty place again. read more
