I went to Surya on Pau Claris for my last dinner in Barcelona but unfortunately they were all full so they made a reservation for me at the one on muntaner. Given my thoughts on the food, I am a bit puzzled as to why Surya has so much business. I came with two friends on a Friday night. The ambiance was good, as it is a super hip and trendy space. Unfortunately, the food was a tad disappointing. As an Indian food aficionado, my companions and I were confused as to what we were served. We ordered three bowls of chicken tikka Masala (two Indian hot and one medium spice), two orders of garlic naan and two orders of rice with a side of spicy olives to start. The spicy olives were just olives with a side of hot sauce. Quite disappointing. When our entrees came out, the three of us sat in confusion as we watched the waitress serve us bowls of what was lightly seasoned tomato soup. It was more soupy than the paste that tikka masala is usually served, and wasn't creamy. They served us pieces of masala chicken drowned in thin tomato soup. The medium spice order was tasteless, as everyone on the table came to this consensus. It tasted like chicken in a sad bowl of Campbell's tomato soup without any flavoring, salt or pepper. The rice they served us was not fragrant and came with leeks, parsley, and other random microgreens that served to add nothing other than aesthetic. The naan was mediocre, and resembled bread more than it resembled naan. Super thin pieces that looked nothing like any other naan I've ever been served. Hopefully people are sensible enough about their food here that they come only for the trendy decor, and loud music and not for the food. It felt more like a club than a restaurant so if that's what you're looking for, you're in good company. read more

Enjoyed a nice dinner. The chicken tikka masala was a little too tomato-y but the butter chicken, dal, palak panned and naan hit the spot. Did not expect fairly good authentic Indian food in Barcelona so I was pleasantly surprised. The service is nice and friendly. If you normally eat Indian food, this place is not for you. As someone from the San Francisco area that has lots and lots of authentic Indian restaurants this was the worst Indian food I have ever had. The service was really good and the restaurant looks really cool but the food was just not good. I couldn't even finish it. I have had korma with lamb dozens of times, it's not something new. I've had several variations but I've never had one so sweet. Indian food is not normally sweet at all but my dish was sickly sweet, I couldn't even finish. Even my friends' butter chicken was sweet. It was so weird. The worst part is that it was actually pretty bland as well. This definitely seemed like Indian food that was created for people who don't like Indian food. Hungry mistake. I'll confess that this was the only Indian place we ate at during our stay, so I really don't know what is the norm. What I'm used to is what I'm basing this on. Generally, I thought that the value wasn't there with this establishment. The food was decent but I found portions to be skimpy. The salad to share was a good size, but the gamba vindaloo just seemed like a complete rip off. For 12 euros, you get these sad little baby shrimp and they're barely there. Also a few pieces of potato were swimming around. The rice is a separate charge, whereas back at home, rice being so CHEAP and all, just comes with your meal. Maybe 50 cents to serve a table? Well, the hangry went away. And on I went with my evening. This meal is now an afterthought. read more

If you are lactose intolerant, this is not a place for you. Sadly. I can't really contribute to a full analysis of a review on Surya, because I couldn't eat much. There are vegetarian options however, if you've vegetarian. We started with Naan, hummus, and an onion salad. The salad - while it had good flavors, was undressed... I had to mix it with the hummus to give it some sort of dressing. Ok for a start - but, well... My friend had the lentil soup, which I sampled. We all agreed that the flavor was great, but the texture seemed watered down. For the main plates, I ordered a wrap - chicken with avocado and mayo. I was afraid to say "no mayo" because that always ends up yielding extra mayo... But the server knew of my limitations of no sauces with milk products - the result - a wrap swimming in sauces (not just the mayo) and I just couldn't eat it. (my first choice of lamb kebab was sold out - at 8pm). I sampled the other dishes my friends got. They were all good and tasty - with lovely flavors of cumin and curry. They all got the good stuff - yet my meal was wildly disappointing. So if you like Indian flavors, and have no restrictions to dairy, you'll probably like this place. Food is fantastic. Curry is definitely Indian, but is closer to Thai Red Curry than most in taste (I've had many curries and work in a Bangladeshi tandoori in England!) so expect a milkier taste and more of a spicy kick although there won't be much more or any more than usual in the cooking- it's about the blend. I had my favourite Chicken Tikka Massala and rice, perfect! Very quick service, no fuss waitressing which some may interpret as a cold shoulder but I think that's too harsh- she seemed very happy, was patient and didn't ignore. Ambience is a bit plain though. I will admit I'm not an expert on Indian food so I might have bias! But I loved the chicken tikka masala I ordered here. I got it with basmati rice and garlic naan. The chicken tikka masala had really nice flavour and was the perfect amount of spicy. I wasn't able to specify how spicy I wanted it made (ordered off Deliveroo) but I enjoy really spicy food and found this a little mild. Meaning my eyes weren't watering but it had a comfortable kick to it. I ordered off Deliveroo so I can't speak on the service or design of the restaurant but it looks nice from the photos I saw. I will order from here again when craving Indian food close to my house. read more

This is my favorite restaurant in Barcelona. If you like spicy, their vindaloo is killer. The spices are always on point, the service is quick and attentive, the prices are great - especially their menus del dia! The naan is to die for, the desserts are great, and the atmosphere is really comfortable and intriguing! If you don't like flavor and deliciousness, stick to the other food you'll find in Barcelona. However if you do, you're in for a treat with this place! read more

Was disappointed with the quality of the food, didn't come out hot, the kebabs were warm not sizzling. Also very very slow on bringing out our drinks. Trying to keep the very laid back atmosphere, doesn't work, when your hoping nothing from the ceiling falls into your food, alot of chipped plates, not healthy.
