Overall this place feels very nostalgic of sushi restaurants growing up. Located in a plaza where there's a supermarket, nail salon, the parking lot get filled quickly. The menu had straight to the point sushi- no trendy new rolls which is good from time to time. Our server was so sweet. This unassuming place just blew my mind! After I finished up some lash service Nextdoor I decided to go to this place since I'm hungry and didn't wanna drive far. My only regret is I didn't know about this place before today! Food wow, fresh, taste on point and the serving is huge. For the amount of food you get, this place should be charging more. Seems to be run by a Japanese couple, making the experience more authentic. This decor reminds me of those small restos in Tokyo. The calamari was tasty, but had super thick pieces in comparison to other places I've ordered. The breading was also falling off on a lot of the pieces. Loved the vibe here! Especially the decor. Came a bit after 6pm on a weekday and we were the only ones dining. The prices are great here, especially for the quality!! We ordered Sushi Combo B, mixed tempura, chicken karaage, pike fish, tuna hand rolls, and mackerel sashimi - everything was amazing. The fried items (tempura and karaage) were perfectly crisp and the right texture. It's hard to find tempura that's fried correctly, and they do it right here! The restaurant is really small and doesn't have a lot of tables inside so I like coming here for takeout. They get a bunch of takeout orders so order way ahead of time because it takes awhile. This place is great for sushi. My favorite roll to get is the eel avocado roll. The staff is very nice and friendly. Parking is free and in front of the restaurant. If you want to try Osechi (Japanese New Year's feast), this is the best place to get it from!!! You need to order it ahead of time and pick up on Dec 31. It was $218 including tax this time. It was sooooo well worth it. Everything was fresh. So many different items!! We decided to have it right away as NY Eve dinner (which is already NY in Japan!) We wormed up the snapper in the oven, but everything else was great as is. We enjoyed it with another couple, and it was more than enough for 4 of us. Chef Kazu and his wife Kazumi are a great couple. We go have sushi and sake there once in awhile. And their sake tasting events are insanely fun. Small-ish dining room, but I prefer to sit at the bar to watch the magic happen in front of me. Service was very attentive and friendly. We had tuna, albacore, salmon roe, Spanish mackerel, snapper, squid, scallop nigiri. AND because I wanted more, a tuna roll. Tucked into the corner of a strip mall is sushi anza. It's simple. No frills and short staffed. When you step in you're transported back to the 80s and 90s. They're focus has nothing to do about decor and it's all about the sushi + price. I call out that they're short staffed bc it takes a while .. a long while to get your food. It's a waitress and the chef. That's it's. So be kind and patient when waiting. For the price and service this place is amazing.Once you're seated you'll experience the kind service from the waitress. We got tea which is a very light and aromatic green tea. We order way too much delicious food and have zero regrets. The quality is fresh and delightful. Don't sleep on those scallops AND chirashi. The uni is some of the best I've had outside of Japan. Seriously. Briney from the ocean. I don't think the chef gave us uni from the tray. I think he might have opened it up fresh! I'd skip the sweet shrimp and toro next time. It's not bad. Wanna go back to around 1975 in Shita Machi/old town Tokyo with Chirashi Sushi prices to match? Sushi Anza is hidden in an out of the way corner of a shopping mall anchored by a Vons supermarket. Small narrow space with standard tables & a limited Sushi bar that may seat around 6. Inside walls are lined w/ all sorts of nostalgic Japanese tschotches, but more prominantly displayed are the photos of frequent Sakè (sah keh) tasting parties where there are apparently up to 19 different micro tastings as well as aycd draft Japanese beer for a set price. Food of all kinds raw & cooked can be ordered but not included in the Sakè tasting price. I had the Deluxe Chirashi Sushi which is a bowl of Shari/Sushi rice upon which Neta/ingredients are placed. 1) Maguro/bluefin tuna 2) Hamachi/yellowfin tuna 3) Suzuki/seabass 4) Shiro Maguro/albacore 5) Tako/steamed octopus 6) Shakè (shah keh)/salmon 7) Ikura/salmon roe 8) Èbi/steamed shrimp 9) Uni/sea urchin 10) Kampyo- (cahm pee yoh)/sweet soy sauce braised gourd strips 11) Takuan (tah koo ahn)/sweet pickled Daikon radish 12) Tamago/sweet egg 13) Shiso leaf 14) Tsuma (tsoo mah)/ shredded raw Daikon root 15) Gari or Sho-ga/sweet pickled ginger root 16) Wasabi pungent, spicy, aromatic paste Be sure to eat all the vegetable based ingredients. They are not just decorative garnish. They are "Doku Keshi"/antitoxins with antibacterial properties when back in the Èdo period over 150 years ago there was no refrigeration. It's still valid to eat today since they also serve as antioxidants, roughage to aid in digestion, regularity, anticancer properties. At $21 it is a great deal that includes the super expensive Uni. The regular Chirashi Sushi doesn't include Uni & is a even better deal at $15.80!! I haven't seen these prices in over two decades here in L.A. With rock bottom prices like these, don't expect hyper premium cuts, but keeping that in mind it was perfectly acceptable. Funaguchi Sakè Nama Genshu Ichiban Shibori Kikusui Kura: Nonpasteurized, first batch, undiluted. This Sakè may be closest to Sakè made during the Èdo period. Sweet velvety, hint of Sugi/Japanese cypress, Kinako/toasted soy bean, roasted pear, backed by a bit of acidity & good backbone of bitterness. May have been a bit overpowering for Sushi, but still an interesting, worthy Sakè. Get regular Kikusui Sakè for more subtle, gentle palate cleansing offset to Sushi. Service is friendly, laid back, casual, efficient. Bonus: Anza is open until 1am Tuesday-Saturday. which is rare in "roll up the sidewalks by 10pm" Torrance, sin city of the South Bay. 4- Yelp stars. read more

Torrance Food Crawl #351 Sushi Anza is in the corner of the shopping center at Torrance & Anza. It's been here for some years now and a little on the older side but seems well cared for. Of course there are all the individual sushi items that can be ordered as well as some combo dishes. In addition, you can also choose between having four California or Spicy Tuna nigiri - I went with the tuna. The best choice was the Salmon Egg (ikura) which had fresh fish roe and seaweed and rice wrapped vegetables as a base. The Octopus (tako) came off as very chewy, and yes octopus can be on the tough side but this seemed a little chewier than average. The Shrimp was very flat tasting. Last nigh I decided to order something different, adding to my regular Sushi Combo B, I ordered "Ika" (Squid), "Aji" (horse mackerel), "Ama Ebi" (sweet shrimp), "Hamachi" (Yellowtail) and "Maguro" (tuna). Got the California roll (HIGHLY RECOMMEND), spicy tuna roll, Philadelphia roll, and salmon cilantro roll. I fancied the cilantro roll because it was very unique and the flavors combined so well. Wasabi kicked ass, and ginger was probably the most authentic tasting I've ever had. It's not the kind of wasabi you get from a tube or super thin sliced ginger you get from the store. This is the worse sushi restaurant I have EVER gone to. First we waited 40 minutes for our order and when we did our order was wrong. Then 10 more minutes later my daughter got her sushi burrito and it was bad tuna. Totally rancid. Disgusting, brown with white, looked like some kind of bug. My daughter actually swallowed it.
