My mom owned a sushi bar for 10 years. I grew up going to the fish market at the crack of dawn to pick up the freshest fish. To say I'm picky with my sushi would be an understatement. When I moved to the DMV I was very disappointed with the quality of fish. Yesterday I was randomly walking through the underground shops in Crystal City when I found this hidden gem. I ordered the bibimbap Bc I just didn't want to be underwhelmed once again by DMV sushi. I decided last minute to add a salmon avocado roll to my order bc I thought who could mess that up?! Wow! When I got home and tried my roll I was surprised by the thick cut of fatty salmon in my roll! It was so delicious, I regret not ordering more. I will definitely come back and order a chirashi bowl. I want to try the other fish and hopefully (fingers crossed) everything will be just as high quality. My bibimbap was also very good and was a huge portion. I ate some for dinner and just ate some more as part of my break. I STILL have some left Bc the portion was so huge. It also came with a free miso soup which was a very good palate cleanser. Great sushi with a great price! I was staying in the apartments above this sushi place for the week and I love the convenient location. Just a 1 min ride down the elevator and a 30 second walk, you are at the hole in the wall sushi restaurant. This place serves fresh rolls everyday Edith from the premade ones from their fridge of requested rolls made right in front of you. I would get the salmon avocado roll which only costs $5.00 WOW. And salmon belly nigiri for $5.50 EVEN MORE WOW. I try to stop by whenever I take the metro since it's on the way. But honestly this place is great and the prices are even greater! read more

This place took us a bit time to find. It is actually underground in Crystal city shops and we kept driving around but it was definitely worth the wait and effort!! My brother is visiting from out of town and we wanted sushi to take home. Saw the good reviews and we were at pentagon city so just 5 min away. This place is tiny so it's more of a take out spot. *updated review It's been almost a year since my first review here and I have to take away some stars. I've had their sushi 3 more times and 2/3 was a miss. Both times the salmon inside of the rolls was tough and didn't taste right. The salmon used for nigiri was of much better quality but I'm still disappointed. I consider this to be equal quality to grocery store ____________________________ Hidden gem! Located underground in the entrance to the crystal city metro. They only have a few seats, and I really mean a few - not more than 4. I couldn't see myself sitting down to eat here but for take out it's perfect. I didn't have high hopes for the quality considering how cheap it was but I was surprised. The salmon was fresh and buttery. Arrived late while on business. The staff is very nice. Service is good. Portion and price are good. But the fish was very so so. They didn't taste fresh. The raw octopus was chewy and rubbery. It's not the staff's fault. Whoever is the fish buyer isn't getting the greatest supply. read more

This tiny sushi counter packed in a lot of pleasant surprises. First, please understand how I approached this establishment: From a long ways away. I had just walked about a mile looking for a particular restaurant without any luck finding it. I then walked the mile back and was willing to settle for just about anything...and there was Sushi Garden. It was clean. But, with seating at the counter that will fit a maximum of four people in semi comfort, it had better be clean. The video menu board cycled through the menu just slow enough for you to read one or two items, but too fast to let examine the menu the first time through. You had to wait for the third video menu cycle to re-read the prices, just to make sure the prices were actually as high as you thought they were. I picked what I wanted, but then stopped and took a pre-prepared selection from their refrigerator. Why? Well, it looked good. Plus, I figured that if they were going to disappoint me I should just get it out of the way. Also, I figured they were still in business, so it wouldn't make me sick. Not only did I survive, but the pre-prepared, not a lot of effort because it wasn't made in front of you, bit of cold delight was very tasty...in a good way!!! Sushi Garden has the best tuna that I have had in a long time. I love tuna, and I normally avoid the bland washed out offerings on the east coast. This I will come back for! The salmon was delicious too. The seaweed salad was lacking, but if that's the only thing I could find to complain about, I'm coming out far ahead. A very tiny sushi spot down in the Crystal City Underground. They're located in between the Lily Bubble Tea spot and a framing store. They only have 4 seats, so I think they're best for to-go orders or picking up the pre-made sushi packs they have for sale in the little refrigerated kiosk in the front. Fortunately when we went, there was only one other person dining at the counter. There's the lady (not the friendliest face) who was working the cash register, and the actual sushi chef behind the sushi counter, so we weren't entirely sure on who to place our order with. We ended up getting: Spicy Noodles with Cali roll, spicy salmon roll, and the bento box. The okay food: the miso soup they give, was nicely hot (almost scalding), and the miso taste was there. However, I was disappointed to see there weren't any tofu chunks, and not a lot of seaweed. The bento box was good, I wish they gave more rice but they gave a lot of chicken (flavor was good). The edamame didn't have the sprinkled salt on it that I like either. The salad, was just okay, the dressing wasn't the greatest. The California rolls were a bit too big..but it had more filling instead of rice. The not so great food were: the spicy noodles and the spicy salmon roll. The spicy noodles are literally the Shin ramen packs you can buy at H Mart, for around $1 /pack. I can't justify spending $10 for that meal, when they just added some bean sprouts and other toppings (and it wasn't even spicy). They also forgot to give us the Cali roll that comes with it, until we had to ask for it. The "spicy salmon roll" was a regular salmon roll with Sriracha on top. The fish was fresh and there were large pieces of salmon, however, I wasn't fan. Overall, I'd go back and get their other sushi dishes, and their bento box but nothing else. read more

I ordered the sashimi deluxe and had door dash pick it up. I was supposed to receive salmon, salmon belly, unagi, yellowtail, tuna and miso soup. I received octopus, I think. And some white fish that had a very strong smell. I did not receive the miso soup because they said their menu has changed. I also never had the opportunity to ask for low sodium soy sauce. When I called them they blamed everything on Door Dash and did nothing to compensate me. They really don't care about customer service. read more

The sushi here is bomb!! It took me a while to find the restaurant and he let us stay after closing. The rolls are huge and we ordered twice as much as we actually ate. This underground sushi stand is great place to grab a quick bite to eat. With limited seating (4 chairs at the bar) this stand is setup primarily for carry-out. My group was lucky enough to arrive early and sit at the bar where we got to watch the skilled chef prepare our sushi. I opt'ed to try a few of their rolls which were excellent.The basics are all there and the menu has a few creative twists. Definitely worth a stop if your craving sushi. Don't be put off by the fact that it's in what, for all intensive purposes, is an underground metro walkway. read more

I was looking for a sushi/teriyaki place after my workout at a nearby LA Fitness and yelp lead me to this place. It's located in the Crystal City mall. There is no free parking around the vicinity so I ended up parking in the underground garage for $6/hr...pricey but it was my last day in DC, so I figured I was going to treat myself today. I discovered this place when I decided to explore the Crystal City Metro stattion. It's a little place with only four or five seats, so it's better for takeout, but when you do get a seat there, it feels special. I have been to so many sushi restaurants in the DC metropolitan area and nothing had impressed me. As a California native, I figured that no restaurant on this coast would become "my sushi place." Much to my pleasant surprise, this place easily became my favorite. When I first sat down, I was sitting on the end seat, where it's difficult to watch the guy make the sushi. I sat next to this couple who seemed to be regulars. When they saw that I was trying to watch the guy make the sushi, they offered to move down so that I could see. They told me that they go there all the time and most of the time, they just let the chef there surprise them with his own creations that are not on the menu. As if on cue, the chef handed the man a bowl of soup. When he asked what the soup was, the chef just replied "It's good for you" in a thick japanese accent. I then knew that I was getting something good. I ordered the crunch roll, which is a tempura roll that just melts in your mouth and the philidelphia roll, which had avocado, which I'm not a big fan of. I told the chef that I did not want avocado in my roll, and he asked me if he could substitute it with cucumber instead. It was perfect. I grabbed a drink from thier cooler-thing, and when I looked on the menu, I discovered that it was free. So this quaint shop is in the basement under the Marriott. The price were reasonable and I decided to try a veggie roll with asparagus. For less than $5 it was filling. The main thing for me that it was made to order not pre made. There were some that were premade but I opted for made to order. The fort traffics coming off the metro seem to keep them busy. Overall, it was a great place in interesting place. There was space available to spit down and eat. Coke and sprite products were available in cans. read more

I've come to this place for 6+ times and most of the time I order Chirashi which is assorted fish on top of a bed of rice (I have serious craving from time to time..). This is a small counter set in the Crystal City underground right next to the metro. The sushi is decent and you get to watch the guy make it right in front of you. They have a pretty big assortment of rolls, good soup, and some cooked dishes, including teriyaki chicken. I felt really bad for the guy when we went because while we sat there and ate at least three different people came up to him, asked for something that wasn't on the menu, and then berated him the whole time he was making their special order. It was painful to watch, I'm suprised how calm he stayed. I mean, how stupid is it to be mean to someone who is wielding a very sharp knife? Common sense people. Very disappointed. I was in town for Wreaths Across America and after reading such positive reviews and checking out the menu I had high hopes for some good Japanese food. I relied heavily on a couple folks that compared it to places in Japan. I ordered several different Nigiri all of which were just not quite right. The rice was off (and the rice is equally if not more important than the fish), the fish was fishy which Tuna should not be and the menu items I saw online were nowhere to be seen. I cannot agree that this was as good as a place in Japan as I've had far better sushi in the to go area of basement department stores. The tiny counter means your back is toward all the shoppers passing by and people trying to order to go are crowded around you. I would not return. read more

Quality of the fish is pretty good, but my concern is with the value (since I frequent for lunch as a pick-up only option). 4 months ago I used to get two rolls and miso soup for $9. Today, it's 1 California roll for $6 and miso soup is $2 extra. The miso soup is all broth with 2 small chunks of seaweed & tofu, so $2 feels like a rip off. Tucked away in the tunnels of Crystal City is this small little sushi joint, with enough seating for about 4 people. The prices are a tad bit steep, but mostly when you order the fancier rolls. The quality is quite good, with the fish tasting fresh. They make the rolls to order which is a nice added touch. I opted for a shrimp tempura roll, an eel roll and your typical california roll. All relatively good, with this particular shrimp tempura roll having cream cheese in it? Unexpected, not sure if I liked it at first, but grew to appreciate it by the end. It all came down to about $18, which I think isn't too bad. Perfect place for a quick sushi pick-me-up!
