Not bad but with one caveat: skip the sushi and try the typical izakaya stuff instead. When you walk in here you will recognize this kind of place instantly if you are a global traveller who has spent time in neighborhoods outside of the major cities: at one time it was the only sushi restaurant in town and it has maintained its ways throughout the years. The quality is not bad, not good but it will do if you need your fix and have no other option. Sushi itself is OK. Tuna nigiri was strangely colored and not too flavorful whereas seared salmon belly was a bit better and close to standard. Much better was chicken katsu curry and the gyoza, both of which were perfectly fine preparations of the comfort food classics. The vibe is a little weird. At last! A decent sushi restaurant in Brighton. I've had two really annoying Japanese meals in Brighton, one in a restaurant owned by a certain famous DJ and another at a well known sushi chain (I honestly think a BigMac would've tasted better than the food in there). First of all, in Sushi Garden, you actually feel like your in a Japanese restaurant, the decor, smell and staff all really make the senses jump! We had a fantastic lunch there one Saturday and found it a lot more relaxing as it wasn't as packed out as the evening time. I started with some nice warm saki to get things going and then ordered a mix of tuna and salmon sashimi and nigiri (I always over order this as its so moreish). For a main I had some pork gyoza with a pork shabu salad on the side which was more than enough for me for lunch. Japanese restaurants aren't the cheapest places to eat but when they're as good as this who cares. read more

I am always a bit wary of sushi joints in the UK. Most are pretty average and Sushi Garden isn't much different. The food merited 3.5 stars but we had very friendly service which brought up to 4. We shared a few rolls - spider, dragon and rainbow. All pretty but oddly came on separate plates. They tasted fine but didn't really have much wow factor. A couple also came with crab stick which is a big no no for me. I don't come to restaurants to eat fish processed into imitation crab meat. It would have been nice to have fresh crab meat. Seafood tofu was refreshing. I quite enjoyed this dish and love the flying fish row on top. Octopus salad was a replacement for the other octopus side, takowasa, on the menu. The octopus was perfectly cooked and tender (not chewy!) but it was served on a bed of wakame and lettuce and was just a little dull. We also ordered the fired calamari. This came late in our meal which was just as well as it was so sweet, it stood in for dessert. My partner called it 'squid donuts' which is exactly what it tasted like. Sweet, cloying, greasy. The meal was fine. I don't think it merits the overwhelmingly positive reviews from other yelpers as the food seemed inconsistent and the sushi only slightly above average. Service was fun though. I'm never quite sure which I prefer out of Sushi Garden and Murasaki, for my restaurant fix of sushi and other Japanese grub. Today's visit to Sushi Garden was as delightful as always - friendly staff, nice sushi rolls and a good 'sashimi bibimbap' lunch menu treat. It was a pleasant surprise to find that they've changed the menu slightly - All lunch special sets are now available every day until 3pm, rather than a specific choice each day. Sushi Garden is always reassuringly filled with Japanese clientele, so I'm assuming they are pretty authentic! read more

Have been to Sushi Garden on multiple occasions for various reasons. These comprise of the pleasing atmosphere (despite being on Preston St), speed and politeness of service, tremendous choice, but first and foremost the quality of the food. No other sushi restaurant has touched this place for me, the first time I ate there, I tried eating with my eyes shut in an attempt to heighten my sense of taste. Sushi Garden is by far the best Japanese/Sushi restaurant I have found in Brighton. Far less gimmicky than Yo Sushi and less pretentious than Moshi Moshi, the restaurant is really lovely and full of character. In prime position near the top of Preston St (otherwise known as restaurant row), Sushi Garden is up against some stiff competition, with good restaurants all around. Despite this, Sushi Garden wins every time for me... The interior is amazing...they've really gone to town with the Japanese decor and they've done a great job! Japanese lanterns and prints hang everywhere, creating a really authentic backdrop and a really warm and inviting atmosphere. The staff are all Japanese and wear traditional dress, which adds a lot to the experience. The food is both delicious and beautiful- presentation is impeccable, as is the service. I ate here in a big group back in May, and as far as I can remember everyone enjoyed their food. They do everything from the expected nigiri, maki, and sashimi to really interesting salads and tofu dishes. If you're feeling adventurous, try the Jelly fish salad! The gyoza come highly recommended, particularly the prawn, as does the Maki Aubergine. The sushi menu is exhaustive, with literally every kind of roll and combination platter you could think of. I can pretty much guarantee you won't be disappointed! There is also a vast selection of Bento boxes, ramen soups and udon noodle dishes, so if sushi isn't your thing, fear not! read more

Coming with raving reviews and highest recommendations from friends, I went to Sushi Garden on a Saturday evening - we booked a table for 6. The service was okay, even though they lacked attention to detail (no chopsticks on some of the seats, forgetting details of the reservation and so on, minor details). The service was friendly otherwise. We were informed straight away that there would be a 45 minute wait, which we accepted. Ordering the food, we were informed that some items should not be ordered as they would take 95 minutes to be served. The food started arriving, plate by plate, after 80 minutes. Usually that would be slightly bothersome, but given we have waited 1h20m we did not really care. It took another 30-40 minutes until the last plates had arrived. The food, as many on Yelp have noticed, was great, the Sushi rice was tasty, the choice is limited but excellently edited. Also the variety outside of sushi dishes made this a nice Japanese place, rather than just a sushi place. We have been offered a round of drinks for the waiting time and the head chef personally apologised, giving no reason for the delay. In the end, when we asked for the bill, this took another 20 minutes until we decided to just go to the till and pay on the spot. The food was great - the experience was horrible. Talking to my friends, they have experiences similar waiting times before, so this did not seem to be an exception. If you want to try this restaurant, you may do so during off-peak times, but I can definitely not recommend it for a group of people in the evening. read more

Awesome food. I came here for a friend's brithday, and although I am a sushi fan, had never really had any that didn't come from a chain restaurant. The quality of the fish and the care with which it had been prepared was obvious from the first bite, and it all tasted incredibly fresh. As well as the different sushi and sashimi dishes to order separately, there were a number of different bento boxes to try. There was also a good range of vegetable dishes - the kim chi is good. To drink, a range of cold and warm sake served in ceramic glasses was available, as well as the usual bottled beers and wines. The only thing stopping me giving this place the maximum five stars is the amount of time it took us to get served - there were about 15 of us, and it took around 2 hours (that's not an exaggeration!) for everyone to get their meal. But come in a couple or with 1 or 2 friends, and you'll be in sushi heaven. read more

Absolutely fantastic sushi restaurant. The decor, design, atmosphere, the layout, the staff. All add to a fantastic evening here. The food is just phenomenal, the sushi so full of flavour, in so many different varieties you'd never get bored. The ramen and soups are just outstanding in taste and makes me realise what rubbish places like Wagamamas are! There is a wide choice of delicious plum wines, japanese beers and other liqueurs. As die-hard sushi fans, my wife and I recently went here for my birthday. From the moment we walked in, we felt welcome and the waitresses were very smiley and accommodating. We ordered a healthy mix of sushi and sashimi from the very extensive menu. The food arrived quickly and was nicely presented. It really was very very tasty, and we were both genuinely impressed by the quality and purity of the flavours. The house sake was also very nice, and we had quite a few flasks of this over the course of our meal. The waitresses were perfect - very attentive and friendly without being in your face or too close - just what you'd expect of a quality Japanese restaurant. Was this the best sushi I have ever had? Probably not, but it was very close. And the quality of service really is second to none. Our total bill was 63 pounds for two, including drinks. We were both amazed by this, as we had certainly not been shy with our orders. If you are in Brighton and want sushi, this is definitely THE place to go. 5 stars and a hearty recommendation from me. Appalling service, our food came out 10 minutes apart with no explanation, mine was taken away when my girlfriend was still eating. My girlfriend was given a ramen with uncooked seafood in and I was given a chicken curry that I quote "had the chicken melted in" there was nothing but sauce... 3 days later I've still got a dodgy gut. Great to find a proper Japanese sushi restaurant in Brighton. The menu is extensive and features some very comical descriptions "cheesy dragon - like girls secret temptation, let yourself slide on cream cheese!" The staff were very friendly and efficient and the atmosphere is very authentic. Went for the medium sushi special along with a couple of sushi rolls (including above mentioned cheesy dragon!) which was plenty of food for two people. Also got to sample a selection of sake which was interesting albeit a little stomach burning. It's a little pricey but worth it compared to the cheaper chain- restaurant alternatives. The lunch time set menus for £5.50 would probably be a good option for those new to sushi. read more

Comparing this place to Moshi Moshi is like comparing a Ferrari 250 to a Peugeot 7-seater people carrier: both great in their own right but built to do totally different things. Moshi Moshi is all about efficiency and customer turnaround whereas Sushi Garden is all about high-quality sushi, traditional decor and great service. The problem with other sushi places is that the balance between rice and fish is such that the flavors become boring after a few pieces, however, Sushi Garden knows exactly how to avoid this. All the dishes are perfectly balance in flavor and texture and despite it's priceyness you'll definitely remember it fondly. read more

My friend and I had an absolutely terrible experience at Sushi Garden. Firstly, our server did not know the menu at all. She was very timid and uneasy from the moment we walked in the doors. When we ordered, she looked at us funny, and had to look at the menu to understand what we were ordering, despite the fact that we ordered straight off the menu. I ordered Yakitori (chicken teriyaki) with a side of steamed rice. I was put off by how expensive the Yakitori was but I assumed it would be a healthy portion. I was also put off by the fact that I had to order the rice separately, considering how expensive the Yakitori was and at other Japanese restaurants that I have eaten at the dish always comes in a large bowl with a generous portion of rice. I arrived at the restaurant incredibly hungry and assumed I was ordering a main dish. The waitress did not question my order at all. When the food arrived, the waitress put it front of me a plate with the two smallest skewers of chicken I have ever seen. You could not even call this dish an appetizer. The bowl of rice was also tiny. The food was mediocre, and I was still starving when I finished eating. I could not get over how expensive the food was for how little I received. I did not eat enough to even equal an appetizer. My friend and I were both so disappointed with our meals and with the service that we asked to speak to the manger. I explained my dissatisfaction to the manager. He was incredibly rude and laughed in my face as I was complaining. I told him I could not justify paying that much for so little food. There was also an added service charge on the bill that I did not feel I should pay, as the waitress was terrible and should have told me that I was not ordering a main dish. He told me he would take the service charge off. He returned with the new bill, with the service charge taken off, and I asked if my friend and I could pay separately. We both gave him cash for each of our meals, and when he returned with our respective change, he handed me a receipt that indicated that I had paid the service charge. I counted the change and he indeed charged me the service charge he had promised he would waive, while the service charge on my friend's receipt was in fact waived. I could not be bothered to argue the 75p that was taken from me, despite my anger. This was one of the worst restaurant experiences I have ever had; from the terrible service to the infinitesimal portions. I was forced to buy a second dinner elsewhere after as I was still so hungry. You will be a much happier person if you avoid this place entirely. read more

We'd had a craving for Japanese food but it was difficult to find a well-reviewed place in Brighton, leaving this restaurant just about the only option that Yelp! even really recommended. Unfortunately, it was okay, but just really not memorable and actually really expensive. We ordered up and down the menu, and left hungry and a lot poorer. There wasn't any dish that stood out in my mind as better than the rest or worth recommending to you guys. I've been to the Sushi Garden twice now and both times have been really lovely. For lunch it's very reasonably priced and relaxed, but it's nice enough to go for dinner with your parents there too, as I did on the weekend. One of my favourite things is the descriptions of the food in the menu- poetic and charming, they make me smile! The sushi we had was delicious and beautifully presented. Each piece was generously sized and a few different dishes made a great starter to share. Mains were also very good and portions once again generous- my mum and I both took half our udon soups away with us, which provided my boyfriend and I with lunch the next day. Green tea ice cream was a perfect light finish. The restaurant is nicely decorated in a Japanese style without being over the top or tacky, and they are loads of little notes people have left saying what a nice time they had there, which is a nice touch. My only criticism would be the slightly random order that the food was brought to the table, so my dad and boyfriend had their mains whilst my mum and I had to wait a fair few minutes before ours arrived, and then later the fried tofu we'd order to start arrived. However, it was nice to have a selection of stuff on the table at once, so it's not too much of a criticism. read more

I have been in this small and cosy Japanese restaurant several times. I can say that I love this place and would recommend it especially for lunch time and even dinner.. The service is very nice and welcoming. They always come with their kimonos and that makes it even more interesting. The food is really tasty and the quality is very good as well.
