This unfortunately, had my hopes up for the main meal, chicken teriyaki don - which was dry and tasteless. My friend was also not very impressed with her chicken karaage. We both agreed that their only decent food was in fact their sushi, which unfortunately is not enough reason for me to dine there again.

Their meals are filling, absolutely delicious and exceptional value. The service is always attentive, polite and the food comes quickly. Hiro is usually behind the bar, cutting up sashimi fresh to order. So fresh in fact, that when I order the salmon sashimi it practically melts in the mouth. Hands down best meal to eat is the Teriyaki Chicken Don. If you order this as a main meal you also get a miso soup for entree. A close second is the Katsu Don, which is essentially a pork fried schnitzel, tossed with a fried egg on top of rice. If you like your eggplant, you must order the eggplant entree!! They are sliced thinly and covered with a delicious sweet sauce. I usually save this to pour over the remaining rice in my Katsu Don, so that I don't waste any of it. Better yet, if you come in on your birthday, for three people dining, you get an entree free. For four or more you get a main meal free.

This is the way I usually judge local restaurants; the more dilapidated the setting, the better the food. Going by this scale, Hiro fares well. Service is friendly and always prompt and observant. Some of my favourite dishes include the age moshi, chicken takoyaki and incredible gyoza. The sashimi is also also delicious, fresh and generously cut- no anorexic slivers to be seen. The only disappointing dish was the teriyaki beef, which was a little tough, but not bad enough that I didn't finish it. The chefs do a good job of entertaining the crowd and are always super-friendly, flamboyant and roll a mean California roll. Located on bustling King Georges Rd, your biggest issue will be finding a car park. Try securing a spot in one of the back streets (behind Beverly Hills Hotel are a few side streets that usually have a couple of empty spaces).

It was a good choice because I was waiting for a ride and would be eating alone. They had a large TV up in the corner which was entertaining enough while I waited for my food to arrive. I'd never had karaage chicken before this, but now it's a favourite of mine. I think that is a clear enough indication of how much I loved their food. I have this place to thank. I had it brought to me takeaway then went to wait by the curb for my ride. The chicken was so hot, I could still hear the oil on it that it had been fried in. Risking burning my mouth, I took a bite. The outside was burning hot but deliciously crispy before I realised it was sort of like a Japanese version of KFC. But so, so much better than that. They had this mayonnaise that you dipped the chicken into, and although I was conscious of how unhealthy it was, the deliciousness of it all melted away any trace of guilt.

Yes, there are other Manmaruya Restaurants, in fact there are 4 of…read morethem in Sydney, located in Campsie, Hurstville, Ashfield, and their newest is Beverly Hills. But this particular Manmaruya is especially unique than the rest, even they have a different menu here. This is because they offer Yakiniku or Japanese BBQ. We had Beef Tongue and Pork Cheek which came seasoned ready to be barbecued. The meat was of good quality and tender. We also had Karaage Chicken, which always taste consistently good, and some mini Sushi rolls to keep the kids happy. The only disappointment I had was when I made reservation once, but when we got there on time we were made to wait for an hour for our table. There were some people there that walked in without reservation and got their table first. This happened only once, therefore I can consider this a one-off and hopefully won't happen again. But in saying that, I don't make reservation anymore in this place since the incident, I just walk in and wait like everyone else!
