The conveyor belt idea is creative, but it results in cold edamame, lukewarm sushi, and not being able to tell what your choices are. By far the best sushi in Salem. I love the sushi here. Service is generally on point and very quick. This Sushi Kyo is much better than the one on Rickey St. The one on Rickey St. just doesn't taste as fresh and I have given them three shots, the rolls are generally smaller as well. The sushi is just awesome on the one on Commercial, the decor is a lot nicer as well at the one on Commercial. I love eating here and sometimes I go once a week. Disappointing all around. Everything I tried off the belt was warm- nearing room temperature. Some of the nigiri had even begun drying, hardening, and discoloring. They over prep far in advance, and leave the extra sitting out behind the belt. They use frozen fish instead of fresh. I LOVE this place! Their sushi is ALL made fresh to order, and they have staff on hand to make specialty or to go orders. The wait staff is very nice and knowledgeable about their menu.Their service is always fast and friendly, we've never had a bad experience! The staff stops by often to ensure you don't have any questions, are enjoying your meal, and to see if you need drink refills. We usually go during off peak hours just for a small snack. Especially since being pregnant, I crave their specialty roll entitled the "Salem Roll" quite often, so we sometimes pop in just to order that an some Inari for the hubby. Even when it's busy, their service never seems to falter. The place is always clean, and does NOT smell fishy in the slightest. Let me just say that I know and have eaten more sushi than 99.9% of Americans. I have eaten at many Michelin starred sushi places in Tokyo and all over Japan as well as eaten many times in Tsukiji fish market, which by the way, is not all that great of a place to eat sushi, but anyway, I just wanted to give you my credentials so that you know where I'm coming from. There are 3 very important factors to making a good sushi: 1) Sushi Rice, probably the MOST important factor. 2) Neta, or whatever goes on the sushi, such as fish, fish eggs, etc. 3) Skill of the sushi chef Only when you have a harmony of these 3 ingredients you end up with proper sushi, otherwise it becomes a pseudo sushi made by sushi chef wannabes, and such was the case here. Rice was not a proper, vinegared, flavored sushi rice. At this point, it is no longer a "sushi". Most of the plates rotating on the conveyor belt were rolls, and funky rolls with mayo, yum yum sauce, etc, which are very unauthentic, but that's besides the point, few that came around such as salmon, grilled salmon were of mediocre at best ingredient. Lastly, nigiri (which means to "grip") was way too tight, rolls were rolled like a rock. Proper sushi in form of nigiri or roll has to have enough air to fall apart in your mouth, and not have to chew. I believe that people have this misconception that sushi is slapping together some rice and raw fish. In reality, "proper" sushi chefs go through years of training and has complexity beyond most non-Japanese folks realize. This place had zero out of 3 necessarily ingredients for making a proper sushi. Some of you may say that you can't expect that in "kaiten sushi", which is a pretty common in Japan nowadays where plates of sushi rotate on a belt. Yet it is true that such sushi it NOT a traditional sushi-ya, many places in Japan serve very good sushi in such setting. For example, Kula sushi which has many restaurants in the L.A. area actually make pretty decent sushi in this kaiten sushi style. I would suggest some of you to try Kula when you are in the L.A. area, taste the rice, and see how nigiri falls apart in your mouth. Yes, some kaiten sushi places use robots to make rolls and nigiris but they make them so well nowadays that they can produce a proper sushi. And at last, sushi chefs aren't Japanese and it's always a bad sign...always. read more

This was my first experience in "train" style sushi, and being a train engineer, I thought it to be a good one. The sushi came out fresh every minute or so and there was lots of different offerings to be had. The service was also excellent and they constantly checked on me knowing I had never been to a conveyor belt sushi place to make sure I didn't have any concerns or if I wanted them to make me a roll that wasn't on the belt. Overall, I had a great experience and my sushi meal was much cheaper than going to a normal place and I got to try a much better variety for a cheaper price. I can't wait to come back. read more

I've been to the one on Ricky Street and to the one out on South Commercial and they are both great service and amazing food. I would beware of this place during off hours. My wife and I had gone down to a tapas place earlier for drinks and appetizers but we were craving a bit of sushi. I'm not going to lie because when I saw the conveyor belt I wanted to run after having a bad experience at a sushi place with a conveyor in CA. We did go in and got seated quickly. My first few plates were good but I made sure to grab cooked items. Then my love for ahi tuna overcame me and I decided to grab a raw roll. My first bite and it was obvious that the tune had been on the belt for awhile as it was lukewarm. At that point I was done as I had no wishes to get sick off of fish that had been left out too long. Normally I love Sushi Kyo, today however was a less than satisfying. First, I ordered tea and they gave me a dirty cup. I waited about 15 minutes for the tea to come originally then another 10 minutes for a new cup. I ordered 2 plates of salem rolls (which was all I was eating) and it took 30 minutes to come. If not for the convenience of being close to where I live and the usually-ready spicy tuna rolls, I would never come to sushi kyo. The waitstaff are negligent of guests and forget orders all the time. The chefs also place dishes on the belt with no lids sometimes, making them cold and dry by the time they make it around the belt, as well as making the serving process very unsanitary. This restaurant has an interesting concept, they have a rotating buffet of sushi selections and other things like spring rolls and desserts on this conveyor belt that moves past people's tables. You simply pick up what you want. The colour of the plate determines the price, and those are listed on the wall. You have a menu with pictures that tells you what you are looking at. The sushi itself is ok, it's not great, or very fresh tasting. Our total bill for two people was only $20 and we had about 6 plates we used, so for an immediate lunch, that is on the cheap, and if you're in a hurry this might be a good place for you. read more
