    Hamachi jalapeño roll

Sushi On kept spamming my husband IG feed and yes, it definitely worked. He couldn't get it out of his mind so we decided to order for DoorDash with some friends. We ordered the chirashi bowl, hamachi Kama, sashimi combo B, and 3 rolls (forgot the names) but we were limited bc one of our party is allergic to avocado. Most rolls have avocados. We did request no avocado on anything and they were pretty good except the chirashi had avocado. But the other rolls didn't. I must say the raw fish was good. No fishy taste and no bad food reaction. Their sashimi slices were thick and sliced correctly. It was good. Next time, we're gonna go and actually eat at the restaurant. But from our to go order, it was an IG success.

    Salmon Lover Roll

Stopped in for lunch since it's real close to work. Tried one of their premium rolls called the Salmon Lover for $23. The snow crab & salmon belly is fresh. Whatever sauce that was drizzled on it complimented the roll well. I have been here once before and overall it's an average sushi restaurant in a busy shopping center. 2 sushi chefs and 1 server. Not sure how many people were in the kitchen. Decent place for a quick bite.

Lemon Flash Roll & Eel Hand Roll

The food is better than most spots around here, but the experience was just okay. The sushi roll came with ginger and wasabi, however, the hand rolls (which were packed separately) did not. As for the food, the lemon fresh roll and the eel hand roll were good, but I'll skip the tuna hand roll next time.

The servers here were extremely nice. They communicated well with us to get us seated in a timely manner. However it took a usual amount of time to get our orders placed and we also had some small items missing when our order came out, but the servers were still attentive. The food itself was great! I love the diversity in the menu and the quality of the fish itself was excellent. This place is quite small and it gets packed, but they do a good job at staying efficient. The owner was really nice too!

A worthy place for happy hour sushi. This tiny restaurant offers standard rolls ranging from basic to ultra fancy. The rolls are probably middle of the road as far as quality, but they'll definitely satisfy a craving. Don't underestimate their cheap basics like Philadelphia rolls, their prices are affordable and will fill you up nicely. - My favorite roll is the Lemon Flash. - Their yakisoba noodles are tasty. - Happy hour is definitely the best time to come.

Literally hands down our favorite sashimi spot in all of sd north county. If you haven't been here I feel sad for you.

The best sashimi spot in all of SD north county in my opinion. The rolls are yummy too and the service is fantastic. So damn good

My wife stopped by for an early dinner. The place was not busy yet and we almost enjoyed the spot all to ourselves. I would say the experience was average all across the board. Decor-very typical sushi looking joint. Again, average. Service-good service.

    Teriyaki beef bento lunch special
    Brittany A.

Found this place because their car with their logo was in the parking lot I was Christmas shopping at. I'm so glad we came here! Small restaurant, super clean, nice ambiance and good service. My husband tried the beef teriyaki bento box lunch special. Everything in there was so good, he ate the whole thing and the portion they give for lunch special is great! I got the sushi combo C, beautifully plated. And the sushi was super fresh. I ate my whole plate up too!

Closest is The Vegas roll (Deep Fried) Furthest is the golden Cali roll (Deep Fried) Can hardly see my wife's NY Roll in the back.
    Kurtis K.

Food was incredible!! The fish seemed to be fresh, which is always a good thing at a sushi restaurant haha. There was only one server on Christmas Eve for lunch and it was a little busy, but you wouldn't have noticed the way the server was handling business. He was all over the place and everywhere all at the same time. The Christmas music was contemporary and old school, the volume was just right as well. We didn't have to talk over the music or the other people enjoying their meals. We really like this place and can't wait to come back.

What a bummer! Came in a few weeks ago for the first time at almost closing and had such good service so decided to come back as I wanted this place to be our regular. Definitely not anymore. I had to update review. The service I received today was bad. After a little bit I was just matching their energy- which I felt so bad about cuz that's not who I am. We were greeted when we came in, another table was there and it got busy. Ok noted. However it took 30 mins to get my toro lover roll. My son's food all came out, then my second roll came out but not my first roll- which I had to ask about and it came last. I ordered that roll first before anything too. By this point I didn't even feel like eating anymore. Ruined my appetite. Nobody ever checked on us, walked by our table so fast every time. we put our empty cup of water waiting at the edge hopefully for subtle hint that we wanted a refill and ignored us until my son said to me, they can't even refill our water? Then the guy I'm sure heard, came up to us and asked if we wanted a refill. So I guess remember you gotta be the one to initiate when you need something. They walk by our table and seemed so busy so I didn't want to disturb but hoping they would notice I am trying to get their attention. had the look on me kinda like I'm done and hoping they would stop to ask if we needed anything. Nope. Ignored. But if you call them, they will stop to address you. I just didn't want to seem like a bother and hoping they would check on us. Anyway once I paid and getting up to leave, they want to be nice and say thank you. Where was this energy when I was dining there? I even left a 15% tip.

    Hotate

Stopped in for dinner on a Monday evening, it was relatively quiet, only a few tables and nobody at the bar. We were not greeted when we entered the restaurant and after a few minutes were told to sit anywhere, we sat at the bar. The service when we went was lackluster, had to ask to order, ask to get water, ask to get a refill. There was no interaction with the Sushi Chef at the bar which when busy I can understand, but also one of the reasons to sit at the bar is for some interaction. While the Scallop Nigiri (Hotate) was actually very good, there was nothing else notable for me. The majority of the rolls were basically all California rolls (Krab) with just a different fish on top. The Sashimi was not spectacular, the grain in the Tuna (Maguro), the texture of the Salmon and the Taki (Octopus) were off. Based on all the positive reviews here, maybe this was just an off night but nothing about this experience made it worth the price, nor the want to give it another go.

Amazing sushi rolls in the Walmart shopping center! My hun & I came here for their Happy Hour which is 3p-6p everyday! I love me an everyday special, especially theirs because they have quality rolls as specials, not just the basics. All the items we ordered were delicious & fresh! I enjoyed out experience so much, I had to take my girlfriends here for their Lunch Special which is 11a-3p everyday. We all opted for the Sushi Roll combo which is 2 rolls (6 pieces each) from the set menu, miso soup & salad for $20! Again, I love how they have specialty rolls as options & not just the basic rolls. There was a hiccup with one of the rolls but the server made things right immediately. Order the Honey Bee roll, you will not be disappointed!

Stopped by for lunch while Happy Hour was still going on. The sushi here is very affordable, and everything we ordered was from the Happy Hour menu and by the end of the meal we were stuffed. My husband ordered a beer for $3 and it was refreshing, for food we ordered the gyoza, Cali roll, spicy roll, snowball and ocean rolls. The food was really good, the snowball and ocean rolls were fries and they came out nice and crispy on the outside. The place is kinda small, and they were pretty busy when we arrived and our server was attentive. I will try out the other sushi rolls next time I stop by, it all very tasty.

My first trip to Tabu Sushi was during the pandemic, and I don't remember enjoying it that much. But, I also attributed those faults to the take-out experience; nothing survives packaging, travel, and dining 30+ minutes after plating and still maintains its peak level of flavor. So, I vowed to eventually come back and give Tabu another shot. First off, I kind of dig the interior. For some reason, it gives me 80's vibes; Tech Noir, but with a few plants and higher ceilings. Dive bar sushi restaurants have always been a thing I've enjoyed, and Tabu just skirts that line. My son and I came here for dinner and they seated us close to the entrance, sunlight pouring through the windows in the late afternoon, making the atmosphere bright and open. I started with an Oyster Shooter, while not the best of these I've ever had, it still had that freshness to it, the hint of brine and citrus overtones, while not being too oily or fishy. Pretty good. My son did most of the ordering, supplying the table with a Dragon Roll, Baja Roll, and an Atlantic Sea Roll. These were all okay. Sometimes the fish used was mealy. Sometimes the technique was loose, causing the rolls to easily fall apart. But, each was still enjoyable with the tastes being satisfying, if not really overly impressive. The true surprise was the Bubba Gump Roll. The sautéed shrimp on top had a fantastic bite and delicious taste to them. And the mixture of avocado, lemon, cucumber, cilantro, and chili powder, all of it was a excellent blend of crunchy and smooth textures, spicy and cooler flavors, and fatty and acidic notes. After everything else we had sampled, I was not expecting something this good when I ordered it. Still, with as good as that roll was, it was not enough to elevate Tabu Sushi past a strong three stars in my eyes. Above average but only just. With as many other sushi restaurants nearby that I prefer, coming back here may not be in the cards for me. But, I would still say it's very much worth a try if you're nearby and hungry.

Don't get me wrong, it wasn't ... bad. It just wasn't really all that great either. The sushi rolls are well made and beautiful to look at, however the flavors themselves were either clashing or simply disappointing. We began with a California Roll, basic in taste and usually a good measuring stick of technique of the chefs. Here, it was clean, well rolled, and pretty tasty. It was a nice start. Then we moved onto the Golden Mountain Roll. When it hit the table, it became a testament of the care that the cooks put into making sure that what they serve looks as good as it can. The roll was deep fried, held up well under cutting, and had a meticulous drizzle over the top. I wish I had more pics of it to share. Flavorwise, it was okay. I'm not fond of cream cheese in sushi, but it had nice heat from the jalapeños, and I wish it had a bit more salt to pair along with the sweet of the crab meat and sauces. We then had a Dragon Roll, an incredibly well crafted and plated master creation that made our eyes boggle when the server placed it on the table. It was stuffed with meat, beautifully topped with ribbons of eel, avocado, and sauce, and it had perfectly proportional dragon ears at the head end of the roll. And yet, the roll itself was oddly dry and kind of flavorless. Last we tried the Tangy Mango Roll. Again, visually this was sublime. It was gorgeous and fantastically crafted. On paper, the flavors really sound like they should work. But, the cream and mango are a bit overwhelming in both taste and texture, making the roll itself more of a novelty instead of a delicious treat. In the end, I can't help but think that if we chose different fare off the menu, we probably would have had walked away with a much different opinion of Umai. With so many other sushi spots closer to home, it may be difficult to come out again with the entire family, so I'm not sure if I'll ever be able to update. Because of that, I have to say I'm stuck with a pretty slightly below average view of Umai Sushi.

Some of our favorites so far are the Escondido roll, Dynamite roll (definitely one of our top picks), Dragon roll, and the asparagus tempura roll. We'll sometimes add a spicy California roll too. On colder days, I love getting their miso soup or spicy tonkatsu ramen, you can even switch out the protein for an extra charge, which is a nice option. My husband usually goes for the chicken katsu curry, and I really enjoy the beef yakisoba or the teriyaki salmon. So if you're in Escondido definitely give them a try!
