The sushi & sashimi regular omakase comes with a bunch of appetizers, which made me happy because more food is always better!! Vibe is perfect, not too stuffy or overly formal, it's intimate but not so quiet that everyone will hear each other's conversations. I personally don't like having omakase at the bar, so I love the table arrangement here. Will definitely come back for the divine fatty tuna and wagyu/uni sushi. A very unassuming location, hidden on the corner of 39th street. You descend 4 steps and step through the glass doors and you are welcomed immediately by the hostess. You see your party for which reservations needed to be made (and you now know why, seeing its coziness) and you sit down. The ambiance is peaceful. The lights are comfortably dim, focused on the table where your food will be presented. There is a shared assumption amongst the diners that you are all there for a special treat, so the conversations are kept respectably quiet. The brightest area of the restaurant is the corner where the sushi chefs are humbly, aptly designing your dinner with a calculated efficiency. You gaze multiple times throughout your dinner because you are entranced with the choreography through which perfect sushi pieces are produced. Per classic hospitality tradition in Japan, you are offered a hot, steamed hand towel for your refreshment. You order the omakase because that's what you're there for. For the rest of the hour, you enjoy the conversation with your party and the delicate entrees equally. Your dining experience is followed smoothly by the attentive staff, never letting you see the bottom of your glass, cleaning up the soy sauce drips from your clumsy sushi wielding before the next dish is served. Our favorites--tuna, uni, snapper, and the oyster (part of the sashimi set). You've already seen the other reviews rave about how amazing the sushi is so I'll spare you those graphic details. If there was room in this review for a CAPTION, this is how it would read: "If you get a high from spending lots of money on fair-to-moderate tasting sushi, then go here." This restaurant proves my long-standing belief that New Yorkers, in general, have no clue what good to excellent sushi should taste like. At first-glance you can see only Japanese patrons so it would be clear to reason that their food is good. Of course there are all young 20-somethings whom I doubt have really sampled what the NYC-sushi-scene has to offer. Perhaps they have not sampled delicacies from the Time Warner Building's ensconced 'MASA' or even the [plebeian $70 per 1 piece sashimi] Bar-Masa (they get the "outtakes" from their big brother MASA's hand-picked daily Japan arrival sushi.) As on aside, I always wondered how fish flown in on the RED EYE can be so eager to great our pallets? This place's chef hand-picked "DELUXE" meals are way over priced for a Murray Hill establishment. More to the point, the fish lacks the freshness and even the necessary "bite." What ever you do, do not order their standard Sushi/Sashimi. At $39 to $49 a meal, it barely suffices in taste. Their portions are about the same as other places; however, what is odd is that for a sampling of fish, they place mostly Tuna on your plate. One piece of salmon; no yellow tail. The tuna was not fresh. The proof was that I found myself using soy sauce (their's is SATURATED in sodium!). If the sushi is fresh, then you never need to add soy sauce; it just tastes like candy. If you want "Americanized" Maki (rolls) like "rainbow rolls" you must go elsewhere. They look down at you, literally, if you even mention that sort of thing. I mean that is not really a deal-breaker here, as they are appear to be a real-traditional house-of-sushi. In Tokyo, they STILL do it better .. much better. Their staff basically ignore your requests if you do NOT order their $80+ selections; and when you do order their high-end stuff their manners are somewhat robotic in response. Their hosts; however, are very accommodating. As Horace Greeley once stated to the youth of America "Go West..." in this case it is the Columbus Circle. read more

My friend and I came here and got sashimi and sushi omakase. We came in around 8PM on a Friday and it was decently crowded. The sashimi and sushi is a LOT OF FOOD. I think it was a fair price and it wasn't super expensive for the amount of food. The sushi itself is definitely more than enough for one person, so I'd opt out of the sushi sashimi omakase and just go for sushi. The sashimi didn't taste super fresh to me, and very average. Some of the slices tasted a bit fishy, and it didn't really wow me. Sushi was a lot better, but most of the flavoring was consistent. The prawn and uni one were probably my favorite. The sushi omakase also comes with a hand roll at the end. We sat at the bar and one of the sushi chefs was really fun and we had a good time chatting with him. The waitress was super attentive and nice in helping us select a sake (although we ended up just getting wine and beer). Not sure if I'd recommend this place for a legit omakase, but it's a nice place to go for a casual dinner. read more

Anyone who lives in Murray Hill can relate to the dearth of upscale restaurants south of 3rd avenue, and the unfortunately mediocre selection of Japanese cuisine that follows. Sushi Ryusei is a 10/10 on every single scale. Their quality of fresh fish makes me wonder what I've been consuming at other restaurants. Their service is impeccable (water glasses never left empty, food served and cleared promptly, extremely politeness). Their atmosphere is tranquil, well-decorated and extremely clean. Me and my husband ordered the seaweed salad, age tofu (so so flavorful!), tuna/salmon sushi, spicy tuna rolls and fatty tuna with scallion roll. All were delicious, flavorful and SO FRESH. Went here for Valentine's Day with the lady. We ordered the Omakase Sashimi & sushi regular and did not regret it. Definitely a great romantic dinner spot. A few highlights worth mentioning: 1. My two favorite sushi rolls were the white fish roll with the grill marks on it and the scallop roll with ponzu sauce (or as I called it "honeysuckle sauce"). So ono! 2. The service was so good it was ninja-like. Every time I glanced over at my green tea it was filled back up without me even noticing. 3. Not sure if it was because it was V Day, but the restaurant gave us a complimentary green tea ice cream + homemade brownie/short cake for dessert. I'll take it =) 4. Finally, a big shoutout to the restaurant for offering Clover as a way to pay your bill. All I had to do was point my iPhone camera at the QR code printed on the receipt then hit the Apple Pay button on the URL that popped up. I've never used Clover before so was pleasantly surprised by how convenient it was. My only critique is that our appetizer wasn't on the same level as the rest of the other dishes, but that's just me being nit picky. All in all, a 5 star experience! Excellent Sushi experience in NYC close to Westin Grand Central Station Hotel. My colleague and I went to this restaurant for dinner tonight and we had a great time. The restaurant has a boutique feel and everyone is very nice and extremely helpful. We ordered a large hot sake to share, and I had the Chirashi (pictured) which comes with plenty of sashimi choices along with the rice on the side. It was definitely filling and very tasty. The wasabi was fresh and surprisingly it doesn't have the same chemically smell and strong sinus clearing side effect as the cheap stuff and tasted good, and they even gave me some fresh jalapeños (smashed) along with the wasabi. To finish off the dinner they give you complimentary green tea. Not sure if that's a great idea late at night unless you want to stay up, but it's nice and warm definitely on the house. The place is clean and looks like typical fancy sushi restaurants in the city. Of course the service is professional and courteous. Food is good as expected. It wasn't anything more or less than I had expected though. Pretty good quality, small sushi pieces that are well made, but nothing more than that. This place is great! The atmosphere is minimalist modern, quiet, and comfortable. The waitstaff was fantastic! I had a seaweed salad and it was a blend of 4 types of seaweed (pictured). It was fresh, vibrant, and full of flavor! I also had the deluxe sushi meal (also pictured). The presentation was not overdone, but it was appropriate. The star of the dish was the sushi and there it was front and center with no distractions. The sushi was extremely fresh and also not loaded up with overwhelming fatty sauces. This is really reminded me of what I had on a recent trip to Tokyo. The price was up there, but not overdone. I paid $50 for the seaweed and sushi. I would definitely go back. read more

Sushi Yasaka is still my top choice for affordable quality sushi in NYC, but this place would be my second (definitely above Sugarfish). My roommate and I ordered the sushi deluxe, shishito peppers, and a bottle of the plum wine for delivery. This is the one of the few places I can find with aragoshi plum wine. The sushi was of great quality fish that was fresh with great flavor. I would say the shishito peppers need a touch of salt, or would have liked a bit of char on it. After my second time eating here last night, I'm compelled to write a review. I've lived in the neighborhood for two years and while there is a nice sushi restaurant around the corner, I was really excited for this spot to open. The interior looks beautiful and the simplified menu with a slightly higher price point made me think it would be a great dining experience. I visited during the first week it was open, after work by myself, and was seated at a table as it wasn't very busy yet. The service was slow but attentive. I ordered a spicy scallop roll and a salmon avocado roll (both in the $9 range) and while the ingredients were very fresh, I was still hungry afterwards so I ordered another salmon roll. All in all, I walked out pretty happy with the experience, but it was mostly due to the pretty atmosphere and quality ingredients, and not the dish size or price. Last night I gave it another whirl, and sat at the sushi bar. The place was packed and the atmosphere was really nice. I was by myself, and it took 45 minutes for a spicy scallop and a salmon avocado roll to come. I wasn't asked once during the night if I needed anything else or if anything was good, I wasn't offered water, and after I sat for ten minutes with a closed menu, the male server came over and asked 'are you ready?'. I'm probably being nitpicky about the server but it came across wrong since yes, I had been ready for a full 15 minutes (I only started timing everything after I had waited for awhile). To be fair, at the end of the meal, they gave me an extra half glass of the wine I had ordered during the meal, and a scoop of (very yummy) green tea ice cream on the House, but I was not impressed with the experience. Also, for the price, the salmon roll barely had salmon in a few of the pieces. It looked like a number of people were getting the omakase so maybe that's their thing - but there are definitely some things to be ironed out for this to be my go-to place. I really wanted to love it and I will probably give it one more time - but I'll go with a friend and wait awhile to see if they figure things out. read more

5 stars is not enough. this is the best fish i've ever had, including Japan. the Otoro is stand out. i've never had otoro THIS fatty. SO fatty. almost to the point of being greasy, but not quite there. its so rich. it was such a GENEROUS cut on a very reasonable bed of sushi rice. My table said the otoro in a hand roll cut up was also really good and creamy. If i could give this piece of nigiri a rating alone it'd be 10/5. it was mindblowing. The regular salmon nigiri was also very delicious, surprisingly delicious for just a simple salmon nigiri. Fatty and tasted very fresh. Chopped scallop roll was also surprisingly good. they rolled in extra crunchies along with caviar so it had texture and flavor all rolled up in one. i heard the uni was also really good but i personally didn't have any. the appetizers: brown butter enoki : rich and delicious and unique. haven't seen something like this at other places. agedashi tofu: 2/5. not that good. karaage: 4/5; juicy and hot but only four large pieces, maybe like eight nugget sized bites if you broke them up. Tempura udon soup: 2.5/5; big shrimp but flavorless soup and soggy noodles. also took too too too too long to come out. its noisy in there and gets packed on weekends so make a reservation. definitely get the fish. appetizers look like a hit or miss based on my experience. but i will definitely be bringing friends back here to try this place. i will never forget this meal! read more

Came here with our party of four and say at the bar for the omakase. It's a newish restaurant located on a quiet street near the midtown tunnel. The vibe upon entering is good. Sushi bar is in the back with seating for about 8-10. The omakase was good but not memorable. I really did wish that it was more memorable. We had the $125 omakase The fish they served were the run of the mill fish. I don't recall having anything special but they charge about the same as the top notch restos for omakase. Rice was good though. That being said we liked it but weren't blown away. We had several bottles of sake but if I recall correctly, their cheapest bottle of sake clocked in at $80 so go knowing that. It would be better if they had sake at a slightly lower price point. Service was good. Staff is mainly japanese which does make a difference. Would I come back? Probably not. There are enough omakases at that price point that are better. read more

I finally tried Omakase at this new place as my friend has raved about it. I came here with 2 other female friends who appreciate high quality sushi. Every piece was mouth-watering and all of us were very satisfied and impressed with their high quality food/service/ambiance the restaurant has created. It was Saturday night and it was crowded, but not loud. We were able to carry our conversation well without screaming as well as the timing for Omakase pieces to arrive on our table was great and very smooth. We all had Omakase premium sushi only with a bottle of white wine(we didn't go for a bottle of Sake), and I think the pairing was fine. Memorable ones including a couple great pieces I have never had like White salmon and Nodoguro(I really loved how they seared and flavored this fish)as well as my standard favorite like Uni, Toro and Aji, but none of pieces were under my expectation. The whole Omakase was very balanced and well-executed. I will defiantly go back there to try regular sushi combinations and some cooked items since some Yelp reviewers here made them sound very appealing. Highly recommended! read more

The variety is always unique, the sushi is always fresh, the chef is always willing to accommodate you. The staff is super friendly as well! This review is a bit personal. I know the owner/head chef Mr. Oyama of this restaurant about 20 years by now. He is one of Japanese Sushi Chefs who was recruited directly from Japan when most New Yorkers knew only California rolls and little bit of salmon in 90s including myself. He was always extremely talented and already above most of other chefs at that time. Only a few Sushi chefs were actually trained in Japan by the way aspiring sushi chefs get to train from early age. He introduced me about 1-2-3 of Sushi and Sashimi as well as some interesting dishes I had never seen(not that he is talkative and educational. In fact he would not appear too friendly time to time, but his food melts your mouth and his dedication to make the best cut on each piece transcends. I learned what good sushi and sashimi are like as I ate his fish). As Sushi culture has spread throughout the city and when we start hearing about more people mentioning a word "Omakase", I found him again accidentally at one of Michelin Star Sushi joints in 2010. He was the head chef understandably, his Sashimi was even more alive on the plate than I could remember and his Sushi had just a perfect balance on every single piece. I was a regular Sushi eater and admirer by then, and I tried to eat his Sushi whenever I can afford(Yes, it does cost to eat this level of Sushi and I would not recommend this place for anyone who is looking for festive sauce heavy rolls or bigger portion for $)! There is always a level of appreciation for the money we spend, and this place's Omakase is very reasonably priced for the value. Tonight, I have finally made to Sushi Ryusei and I was so blown away by the degree of attention paid on each dish even for Tatsuta Age(fried chicken... do not judge me of ordering this at Sushi restaurant!! I had my kid with me) with lightest flakiest crust. Servers were very knowledgeable about their fish and Sake selections yet they were very warm and welcoming. I was also impressed with their minimal decor and very Japanese bathroom with Toto toilet. It was sharp and not over the top, but very bold and classic! Their vision and execution are on point especially for the restaurant just opened. For those who can afford Omakase at Ryusei, I can guarantee you that this is one of best solid Sushi in NYC with a reasonable price tag, especially if you are craving the type of sushi you eat in Tokyo. Eat their Sashimi with sake and enjoy well-balanced Sushi rice and cuts of fish on Sushi pieces. Chef Oyama is never pushy nor talkative, but always always consistent on his knife skill and cut of the fish comes out just superb no matter what type of fish he might have in front of him given night. His starter(eggplant tofu/simmered peanuts/cooked mountain yam), grilled Sawara and fried smelt were all so authentic as well. The uni was the highlight of the meal, rich in flavor with the proper amount of rice at room temperature. The interior design fits perfectly with the food - minimalistic and well structured. I was just browsing Yelp for the area one day when I came across this spot. I saw a great looking omakase place that wasn't overly expensive so was pretty intrigued. While looking at their page I saw a "Order Delivery" icon...obviously that night I decided to give it a try for delivery. Downright amazing. I didn't do actual omakase because I want to save that experience for dining there one day, but their delivery beats any in the area. I went with a spicy tuna roll, avocado roll and the sushi dinner. Firstly I find it pretty cool that such a high end place offers the "Americanized" sushi that I love for delivery. Their spicy tuna roll was the best I've had in the city, and very close to the best I've ever had. The avocado roll was also great, but those are basically the same anywhere. The sushi dinner was phenomenal. The fish was melt in your mouth fresh, and everything was just perfectly executed. My only regret was that I didn't spend some time to try to look up what each piece was. The tuna, salmon, shrimp and yellowtail were all fantastic as were the 4 or so pieces I couldn't identify. Also comes with a tuna roll which was great. Overall, this quality delivered for a bit over $50 is awesome. I can't wait to go and get the real experience in the restaurant. read more
