I tried sushi taku when i first moved to Chicago because everyone and their mama seemed to rave about this spot. Unfortunately at that time, I wasn't as big of a fan of their sushi compared to everyone else. I think they have a great app selection but their sushi is super rice heavy and the fish seemed really dry. My friend and i wanted to give them a second chance and this time around we had a better experience compared to the first. We had a variety of nigiri and unfortunately the salmon one seemed really dry which was disappointing since it's typically such a fatty fish - but the white tuna was our favorite. A slight sweetness from the shrimp, a hint of onions too, crispy and soft in the middle. This was probably my favorite appetizer. Loved the breading on both the gyoza and the calamari. It was flaky and airy. I hate when it feels like I'm eating grease and a bunch of dense flour, so this did not disappoint. Shrimp lollipops were fresh out of the deep fryer and hot but very good. I got 3 rounds of the sashimi salad and it was worth every time. The amount of rice on the nigiris were average, definitely not stuffed but when I took a look on the rolls my friends ordered they also did not seemed too stuffed at all either. The fish was frozen but at the same time most of the pieces I've had were mostly thawed out. Had a couple that were still "hard". This sushi spot gets the job done everytime. We luckily didn't have to wait for a party of 2 on a Friday evening and they had plenty of space inside and outside. I always loved the retractable windows that gives a nice ambiance to the restaurant. Service can be super on point or a little slower. Even though this place is an hour away from my house, I love going here!! The sushi quality is so amazing and I can tell it's fresh. I also really love the appetizers here! I recommend getting the sashimi salad (so worth your money), crab rangoons, shrimp lollipops, and the hamachi fish cheek. Came here on a Saturday afternoon for the all-you-can-eat sushi. We were the first ones seated, so we expected things to move quickly--but unfortunately, that wasn't the case. While the sushi itself was pretty good for an all-you-can-eat spot, the service was very slow when it came to getting our rolls out. With a 90-minute time limit, the long waits between orders definitely took away from the experience. Who doesn't love an AYCE sushi spot?! After a 22 mile long run earlier in the day, my body was in deep need of refueling. A couple friends and I opted for AYCE sushi and I was really glad we did! Never tried sushi taku before, but always see it packed every day. Waited about 40-45min to get seated on a Saturday night. There are plenty of bars and stores you can pop-in for a drink or something while you're waiting. As of writing this review, the BYOB rules are only bottled of wine, sake, or 12packs. I believe they also have a $10 corkage fee. They do also sell alcohol there, too. Food-size is what you'd expect. Lots of signature and basic roles you can get through. All really good. The rolls themselves are quality and I think a bit on the larger side. One thing I would say though is the rolls that have cucumber I'd probably ask for no cucumber or less cucumber. I found some rolls to have excessive amounts of it. Besides rolls, they also have a pretty extensive list of appetizers. My personal favorite was the soft shell crab. Though the second round of it we had did feel it had a bit too much batter. I think one benefit of just how busy it is is that food is always being turned over and things generally feel fresh which I feel some AYCE sushi spots can suffer from. Overall it's a pretty casual spot with plenty of friendly front-of-house staff helping move things along. After tax and tip, it ended up being about $42/person. A but I'm the pricier side then I think some other AYCE spots, but this is definitely a spot I'd recommend for anyone looking for a quality AYCE sushi spot in Chicago! read more

The soft shelled crab and crab Rangoons were really good, as was the sashimi salad. The nigiris had high quality fish and a good ratio of rice. We visited for dinner for AYCE sushi and what everyone says is true - get here early or be prepared to wait for a table! For my experience, the waitlist did not open until 7:00pm on a Saturday, and we waited 90 minutes to be seated for a party of 3. I went for lunch, which is only available on weekdays at $22.99 per person (which is a pretty standard price for lunch AYCE sushi--other AYCE spots charge the same price for lunch). The AYCE menu is diverse and expansive: around 20 appetizers, 6 salads, 20 nigiri, and 50+ sushi rolls to try. Our group of 6 tried the majority of the menu and left super stuffed, satisfied, and feeling that we truly got our money's worth. The fish is very fresh and good quality, and the appetizers and salads are quite tasty. Some highlights include-- Appetizers: Takoyaki, Octopus Karaage, Jalapeno Bomb Salad: Sashimi Salad, Baby Octopus Salad, and I'm always a huge fan of Seaweed Salad Nigiri: You can't go wrong with any nigiri; they were all super fresh and delicious, so just go with personal preference here. My personal favorites were Smoked Salmon, Yellowtail, and Eel. Rolls: Mango Tango Roll, Volcano Roll, Crispy Roll, Smoked Sweet Roll, Fire Dragon Roll Though delicious, the rolls are quite filling and unless you're in a large group where you'll only be eating ~1 of each roll, you may want to prioritize nigiri over rolls to maximize the amount of sushi you consume. This is my first time eating at an AYCE sushi joint and it did not disappoint. They open at 430 for dinner so we showed up right at 430 and there was already a line of customers waiting outside. Our server was great, quick and polite. We started with crab rangoons and fried calamari, both were good. We shared a 2 in 1 roll, and a bunch of nigiri. The quality of the fish was seriously good for $33 all you can eat sushi. We were careful to not over order and ended up getting just the right amount. Miso soup was a bit watered down, but NBD. Taku is one of the best AYCE sushi spots in Chicago. I have been coming since they first opened and although the quality has gone down slightly (very typical of AYCE places), it still remains a top tier spot. The service is quick and efficient and there is outside seating on warmer days too. Some of my favs include the fried oysters, shrimp lollipop, salmon avocado hand roll, and salmon nigiri. I love that they keep adding new appetizers/ desserts too. Due to Covid, prices have gone up, but I would say for the overall quality, Taku is still very worth it. TIP: To order hand rolls, just write the quantity and "HR" next to the roll you want (Ex: _2HR__Salmon Avocado Roll). However, I think that you can only order the regular rolls to be hand rolls, no specialty rolls. read more

Been coming here for years, and it's good enough that sometimes I swing in by myself and eat at the counter. The quality is always consistent and good enough. I tell others the quality of fish is around what you find at Whole Foods sushi for example. I would not come here expecting Momotaro/ Tengoku Abuyira/ any omakase grade fish. What I particularly love about Sushi Taku is the diverse menu. Even if someone in your group may not like fish, there are plenty of non-fish options to choose from. I personally love the soft shell crab and shumai. With tip, expect to pay just over 40$/person, so this place is not cheap. Also, this restaurant has many signs that note they will charge $1 per *piece* of leftover, though I am not sure how often they enforce this. I assume they keep these signs up for more egregious customers. Just be respectful and order small portions at a time, in my opinion. read more
