My husband and I really love this spot for lunch. They have the best sushi rolls hands down. The Fuji mountain roll is a wonderful choice and big enough to share. The fresh tuna is absolutely perfect and the wonderful ending of fresh cut pineapple ends the lunch perfectly. The staff could be a bit more attentive but they aren't too bad, the place is always busy for lunch and the food is always fresh and the place is always clean. Hidden gem in Baton Rouge. A lowkey, bar hall vibe with long tables and all glasses served in mugs. You walk in and it feels like a warm hug. Excellent pork gyoza (the shrimp is fantastic too). Sushi Yama is a great choice for sushi lovers in Baton Rouge! While the prices are slightly higher than other nearby restaurants, the quality is absolutely stellar. Note that you also receive a delicious cucumber salad before your meal and pieces of pineapple when you receive your bill. If you have a chance to sit at the sushi bar, you'll be amazed to see how quickly the sushi chefs work while you wait for them to work on your order. The service here was fantastic as well. As a party of two, we were in and out in slightly less than an hour (enjoyed an appetizer and shared a few rolls). We dropped in after viewing the Christmas lights at the LSU botanical gardens. Place was packed, but we were seated in less than 10 minutes. The server came to get our drink and appetizer order within 4-5 minutes. Drinks came quickly, pork gyoza in about 5 more minutes. We put in our sushi order when the appetizer was served and dinner came in about 12-15 minutes. Nigiri was fresh and firm, and the rolls were very tasty. Considering that there was not an empty table anywhere in the house, the staff did an excellent job getting us served. Very friendly. The only drawback was that they were out of some items, but that was probably because they were so busy. We live over an hour away, but if we were in the neighborhood again we would definitely go back. read more

YELP DOES IT AGAIN! Today my boyfriend and I went for a long walk at the Burden Gardens, and when we were done- we were hungry and decided we were in the mood for some sushi. So I pulled up my Yelp app and checked out the nearby Japanese restaurants. Sushi Yama was 1.5 miles away, and was rated 4.5 out of 5 stars. That's all I needed to see! The restaurant was about a 6 minute drive from the gardens. When we walked in, we were immediately greeted and seated in a booth along the side wall. The restaurant is clean, open and modern. There is a sushi bar along the back wall, so you can watch them prepare your dishes if you choose to. The menu has all of the standard Japanese dishes, and super reasonable prices. We we're planned on having a "light" lunch, and so we ordered 3 different sushi rolls. CRUNCHY ROLL: Tempura fried shrimp, avocado & masago in eel sauce DYNAMITE ROLL: Mixed fresh fish in spicy sauce with avocado TEMPURA ROLL Tempura shrimp with cucumber, avocado & masago, topped with eel sauce ALL DELICIOUS, FRESH, FLAVORFULL AND BEAUTIFULLY PRESENTED! We loved everything so much that we decided to order some dessert. The fried icecream was TO DIE FOR. I have no idea how they deep fry a ball of ice cream, it's literally mind blowing.... but WOW. We should have listened to people sooner it definitely deserves all the praise it gets. I definitely enjoyed my food but I don't get sushi in Baton Rouge- everyone had fake crab in their rolls and they call us snowkrab. First they bring you cucumber salad with fake crab. I got the MJ roll minus the rice which was yellowtail, shrimp tempura, jalapeño, cilantro and sour wrap with Japanese spicy mayonnaise on the side. The jalapeño was got enough without it.
