The workers greeted us very warmly & they were all working hard & skillfully like a well oiled machine...you could tell the servers & sushi chefs were well seasoned. It was a very warm day and we were seated by the front windows, which even with the thick curtains, was still acting like a radiant heated wall! Not a big deal for me as I run cold, but if you are a hot person...this might have bothered you. I was actually wearing a tank top so I was perfect...it was double date night. The fish on sushi & sashimi platters was buttery & fresh. Lots of roll varieties too just how I like it. We started with some appetizers, nice sized shareable portions of tempura calamari & chicken karage. We also ordered agedashi tofu & veggie & shrimp temp, perfect portion sizes for a party of 4 for appetizers. No one ordered any entrees or bentos...although they look really good, we stuck to sushi. They give you a sushi list and a pen and you mark down what you want yourself...I like that too, more control on server making mistakes! I love trying ikura(salmon roe) at different restaurants to see if the chefs marinate the delicate eggs or not. I was pleasantly surprised to find this order of ikura marinated. It was slightly sweet with a hint of sake and not too salty as some restaurants will make it. This order was rich & creamy with the addition of quail egg. We ordered a small sashimi combo with salmon, yellowtail, toro & another white fish...I don't know if it was bonito or what, they didn't go over the items when they dropped the dish...but it was the one in the front on the left. They have an extensive roll list which has a ton of California based rolls topped with numerous options. All really good, but California roll base is kind of boring...maybe they could switch up the centers a little. We got Las Vegas roll...completely deep fried, yummy if you like that type of roll, Polar Bear roll, Cali roll topped with white tuna & seared salmon...YUM, a lemon salmon roll, Cali roll topped with salmon & lemon segments...they go so well together!!!! We also had a Firecracker roll which is a spicy tuna roll topped with more spicy tuna & fried minced garlic...really good with a little extra heat, maybe some jalapeños minced up in there but so tasty. We also ordered a White Christmas roll which is a shrimp tempura roll topped with white tuna, Avacado & a wasabi cream sauce...super tasty. Can't have sushi without a Spider roll & I always have an ume shiso roll...this one had lots of julienned cucumbers in it & a negihama roll to appease my clean, raw fish craving. We had reservations & I definitely recommend taking the time to make one if you want guaranteed seating, I saw a lot of walk ins turned away or told they'd have an ample wait. Birthday dinner in the COVID-19 environment set a challenge as I am the cook in the house and the rule of thumb is birthday boy cant cook on his day. Combined with restaurants no longer allowed for dine in, take out it is. I've been longing for good sushi since all of the madness started and decided to give Sushi Zen a try. They have a pretty easy online ordering system thru their website and highly recommend doing it thru their site so they don't lose a cut to third party vendors. You can select a date and time and pay online and all you have to do is show up. They offer curbside or you can go in as well. Onto the food. 1) Ordered steak teriyaki (sauce on side). This was not bad. Not the best, but not bad. 2) Kids karage meal - this was pretty tasty and the fan favorite for both kids. I ate the California rolls which was really good. 3) Kids chicken teriyaki (sauce on side). This was good. Pretty standard. I like they give you the option to choose white or dark meat and there is no up charge. 4) assortment of sushi. I chose salmon, scallop, spicy scallop, monkfish liver (don't knock it unless you try it), and hamachi sashimi. Overall the food was great. The only downside i have was when picking up the food the receptionist had no record of my order which caused me to freak out and scrambling to find a copy of my order in my email. Fortunately 5 minutes later she came back and said they found my order but didn't have it printed. If you are craving good solid sushi give this place a try. We will be back. read more

To be honest, I didn't know this restaurant existed because I couldn't see it from Bothell-Everett highway...but it's located across the parking lot from Sprouts. It's so good, my family has eaten there twice this week! Not only are the rolls fresh, large, and overall excellent, but the prices are very reasonable as well. Rolls tried so far: - Baked Scallops over California Roll - HUGE, and very tasty with spicy mayo. - Vegetable Roll - I wanted something light, and it did not disappoint. Crunchy, fresh, vegetables. - Seattle Tempura Roll - by far the best this week...the deep-fried salmon/cream cheese is to die for. - Shrimp Tempura - typical menu item, but equally great. - Spider Roll - soft shelled crab was fresh and crispy. - Green Dragon Roll - just had to try this unique flavor combination, and again, it did not disappoint. Sushi Zen is a tale of two different experiences at a table for two. It was a dark, rainy February night, the restaurant was moderately full in the middle of dinner service. We were greeted and seated right away. The staff is very friendly, the restaurant is very Zen like. The prices aren't bad for a strip mall restaurant; however, they might be the most expensive in a very competitive local sushi market. Our order was prompt and complete, that is where my wife's experience and mine took drastically different paths. My roll was beautiful, fresh, and worthy of a Yelp photo. The other items I ordered were equally as delightful. My wife's Sashimi Zen Special ($45) was the most pathetic presentation and small cut pieces (small in size and very thin) of sashimi that we have ever seen (she always orders sashimi). Most of the pieces were good tasting however, the octopus was rubbery. When we pointed it out to the server, she explained that is how they cut it. We were extremely disappointed. See attached photos. It should receive 5 stars for the wonderful interior space, the nice/pleasant staff, and my excellent roll. Instead, the 0 stars for a pathetic sashimi dinner drags it down to a 2 (raised to 3 because everything else was nice). Sadly, we won't be back. I have been coming here for the past 8 years or so because of how fresh the fish is and how amazing the rolls are. I've ordered takeout from Sushi Zen a number of times, but haven't yet dined-in. In all my takeout experiences, I've been happy with it consistency regarding fish quality and cut sizes. The sashimi and nigiri has always had consistent slices across all fish and the quality has seemed to be very good. The mouth feel of the fish have been consistent, the various types of toro have a great mouth feel and melt ever so slightly. None of the cuts that I've had seem "too fishy," as though the fish has been sitting for too long / isn't fresh. I intend on dining in to try the omakase, because I've been impressed with the various sashimi and takeout cuts that I've tried. There is certainly higher-quality pieces in Seattle, which are considerably higher. However, without having to go into Seattle, Sushi Zen is perfectly serviceable, very good quality, super consistent and very good sushi at a semi-affordable price. I would recommend to anyone who isn't looking to spend an arm and a leg on omakase and/or premium nigiri/sashimi, because it's always been consistently good. read more

This is my favorite local sushi spot. First off, I was extremely surprised by how good their rice was on each hand pressed sushi (nigiri). It was well seasoned, warm, and each grain was memorable. It's the smallest yet biggest difference to good sushi! I like to sit at the bar and ask the chef what he recommends and he will share which fish is most fresh that day. He's also super kind and always remembers his customers (sitting at the bar has some perks!) I always order the fatty tuna (toro) nigiri and the negi-toro handroll! Those are my absolute must! We have now been here a few times and really like it. It has a great menu and the food is consistently excellent. It is busy, so worthwhile to call and get reservations. We started off with edamame, gyoza, and vegetable tempura. The gyoza and the tempura were cooked perfectly. The mix of vegetables is great. For my main course, I ordered the sashimi regular (which is a good size for one person). This is more usual order and the fish selections are always fresh and excellent. In particular, the tuna and salmon are always top notch. Their signature rolls are also really good also--my favorite one there is probably the polar bear roll (with salmon and tuna over a California roll). I have also had the bento box in the past and that is excellent (and a very good value). We are usually to full for dessert, but the mochi ice cream is really great. One of the sushi chefs is an older Asian guy that's always really funny and engaging. He said thank you to me in five different languages! Wish they remember to give us soy sauce though! But chopsticks, wasabi, and ginger was all there. While Sushi Zen didn't replace my previous haunt, they now share the #1 spot on my personal list. Here are the things that really stand out about Sushi Zen: 1) The staff is incredibly friendly and they seem to know their regulars really well. 2) Each meal is served with a really tasty salad and perfectly made miso soup. 3) They have dishes that I've not seen anywhere else. One of those unique dishes is their Seattle Tempura Roll. Probably not the healthiest thing in the world, but it literally explodes with flavor and is a treat to have. Service started really well when we first ordered, but as we were ending our meal the server kept passing by our table to help others. (Docking one star.) There was no check in on how the food was or if we wanted anything else. The server who refilled our water is who we caught for the check and a box for what we didn't finish. Also everything we ordered had a lot of ginger and wasabi on each plate. There was cross contamination with the wasabi and the items, which was a disappointment. (Docking half star.) Moved up recently from the Seattle area and have given a few sushi places a try so far and have been a little disappointed. After trying Sushi Zen though, I think this will become my go-to place for the area. First, it was one of the only places that I could find that offered an option for snow crab to be used as opposed to the imitation krab, which usually gives me stomach issues. So that was the big driving factor for me to try this place. Have only gotten to try a couple rolls so far because there are so many that sound really good, but so far my favorite has been the crouching tuna, hidden shrimp!
