Overall okay experience. Tempura was good but just surprised that it only came with 2 prawns/shrimp and the rest was vegetables; for the record we ordered shrimp tempura. I was on a mission to get the best sushi that Munich had to offer, and after reading a bunch of reviews, this spot looked decent. I didn't realize it was in the heart of a university area, and it was hidden in an apartment complex courtyard of some sort. The restaurant filled up pretty quickly for dinner hour, but I was able to get an opentable reservation. The service was quick and very nice too. The price was pretty expensive, though I guess sushi in Munich is difficult to get. The quality of the large sashimi plate was decent, nothing too special. There were definitely alot of options of fish that were super fishy tasting, which even as an avid sashimi lover, I felt a little sick afterwards. I think I maybe just ate too much. read more

The sushi here is the best in Munich, hands down! I recommend going during the lunch special. They have a wonderful lunch special. It's very close to LMU, so if you're an exchange student or touring the city, it's not far from a number of different attractions! Trust me, you'll never have better sushi than this in Munich. During my many visits to Munich I have tried many different sushi restaurants. This was by far the best one I have been to. I went here with a bunch of people from work for a team dinner and I was very happy with all the food. I had the Karaage and the Michinoku Platter. The fish was fresh and the rolls were excellent. The one thing that I noticed that I do not usually see outside of Tokyo is that the nigiri had a small amount of rice under the fish and that there was wasabi between the rice and fish. This is not something usually seen outside of Japan. I would definitely go back. read more

I've had this restaurant bookmarked for awhile, and was excited to try it today for lunch; the interior is really great, tasteful and spare. The service we experienced was not good (slow, unfamiliar with menu items, curt) but fairly average for Munich, I guess. We were one of only 4 seated tables (toward the end of the lunch hour) and waited a looong time for our modest orders to arrive. Getting antsy, we each ordered miso soup to warm up while we waited for our rolls; at 2.50 EUR each I was surprised by how small they were, but the flavor was standard. Sadly, our sushi was not worth the wait; my Ebi roll had enormous sprigs of arugula (see photo) sticking out of very broad, thinly-sliced pieces - I didn't even realize the lettuce was "embedded" in the sushi until I attempted to eat some; the roll completely fell apart everywhere the leaves were "attached". Overall I had a difficult time eating my roll because of the thin, flimsily-constructed pieces; for a meal that amounted to - literally - 6 bites of food (two of which were crumbling fails) I also found the prices rather steep. My husband's rolls were better constructed but unremarkable for the price and very rice-heavy. We both left slightly peckish and not at all blown away by the flavors of either of our lunches - and to the tune of 37 EUR. Judging by the other reviews I'm guessing we missed something, and maybe need to return to try the beef. TL;DR: The setting is really surprisingly lovely, and I can imagine if we would come for dinner & spring for the priciest items on the menu we might have a better time. Been looking for sushi since we have been in Europe and happy we came across Sansaro. Not exactly the menu we are used to in the States but definitely hit the spot. Can't go wrong with the edamame. Also got the Maguro tataki (tuna tataki)...amazing! Came on top of a spicy red "paste" and the tataki sauce - we were all but licking the plate. As far as rolls go, we were in a tuna mood. Got the Mediterranean roll, spicy tuna, and the tuna maki. All 3 were great, the Mediterranean was out favorite, came in a delicious sauce atop a bed of lettuce. read more

I rarely leave reviews on Yelp unless if it absolutely merits one. I would've never expected a Sushi restaurant in Munich to have such high standards in quality of fish. Each piece of fish we ordered was extremely fresh and artistically prepared. My five star rating is based on the following: ambiance, service, and quality. Ambiance: The outdoor patio is a pleasant escape from Bavaria with Japanese plants surrounding the perimeter- you feel as if you are in a Japanese garden. The interior of restaurant has a wonderful layout with blend of normal seating accompanied with izakaya-style seating as well. The lighting was absolutely phenomenal. Service: Attentive and swift. A blend of Japanese and Germany employees makes for a more authentic experience that I was bit expecting. The owner- Alex even took time to greet us at our table- thank you! Quality: Phenomenal and surprised at the selection of fish offered. In addition, they have an assortment of Japanese Sake and Whiskey that I was very impressed with. This place belongs to that extremely small circle of Munich restaurants that authentically portray their respective Asian origins. The decor, the design of the menu, and even the choice of wines and beers (and of course, SAKE) reflect the vision of the owner of this establishment, which is to bring an unadulterated Japanese dining experience to Munich. First things first, decide whether you will sit in the traditional Japanese style (cross-legged on the floor at a low table) or in the modern manner (um, with chairs). Secondly, decide whether you will treat yourself to any of the sakes that they offer. They offer a full range of prices and qualities. At least once, you should come here to taste and compare, because the differences are noticeable and worth appreciating! Finally, choose wisely, because whatever you choose, you will wish you had enough tummy space to have whatever the others at your table have ordered! This week, we enjoyed the fish miso soup and beef filet strips as starters. Be still my beating heart! The fish miso soup should be entered into competition somewhere, or at least get its own Facebook page! The beef filet elicited the food groan, that unmistakable signal that someone (ahem, moi) is enjoying his food. For sushi, I ordered lots of hosomakis and chumakis. Each was prepared artfully and maximised the natural flavours of the ingredients - caviar, salmon, mussels, avocado, tuna, chili, shrimp... You name it, we had ordered it. Please, do yourself a favour - DO NOT DRENCH YOUR SUSHI WITH WASABI AND SOY! These sushi chefs know what they are doing. Take it slow and try the sushi plain. You'll be surprised at the kind of raw power with which its simplicity will overwhelm you and whatever part of your brain that translates "yum" into "full body pleasure". I don't usually think of sushi when going out in Munich, but Sansaro near Universitaet has great fresh sushi. I believe most everything they offer is bio (organic), including the beer. This means you pay a little more in the end, but it's worth it in my opinion. I've been here a couple times with a group of friends and the service was great and food was consistently delicious. For about 25 Euros, you can get Edamame, a small salad, two sushi rolls (spicy california and Avo-Philly are safe bets) and a beer. read more

I first went to Sansaro about a year ago, and then hadn't been back until last week. And when i returned, I was just as impressed as i had been last year. Sansaro sushi isn't the kind of place where you go to a quick meal. You have to be patient while the sushi chefs work their art and create fresh, tasty and just amazing sushi. This is by far the best sushi place i have tried in Munich. The Edamame were warm, and the sushi platter we ordered had fresh fish. We also ordered one of their sushi specialties. It was different but really good. We also tried some Japanese white wine which was surprisingly good. Price wise - it is pretty standard pricing in comparison to other sushi places around, but i feel the quality here is much better. I think I am disappointed with the food. The food most that I can give it is 3 stars. If it is New York, I can only rate it for 2.5 stars. They forgot to give me Wasabi for Sushi. They also gave us a wine glass for tea and the tea didn't taste good at all. So the ratimg down to 2. The fish is really thin and the roll is too big for a bite. The salmon dish didn't come with rice. I don't think it worth for the money. Don't come for the high rated yelp review like I did. read more

This is a belated review from when we visited in July. I was so glad to find a sushi restaurant in Munich with such raving reviews. Coming from Sydney, I am lucky to have access to many decent Japanese restaurants around the city. The restaurant decor was lovely, and we sat at the traditional floor seating. Unfortunately, it was very warm in the restaurant. All the outdoor seating was taken and it was the middle of summer. That isn't the fault of the restaurant though. The menu looked good and there were a lot of authentic offerings. We chose the salmon maki roll, tempura vegetables and one of their "fusion" rolls. The service was okay. We received our miso soup and drinks quite quickly. However, the wait between that and our first course was quite long. We were quite hungry when we came and thought that the service would be relatively quick. 20 minutes after finishing our soup, we asked the waiter if they had forgotten our order. Apparently there was a big party outside and they had to be served first. We were slightly annoyed because we knew that we may have to wait up to 30 minutes for our first course of sushi. We weren't given any warning about this beforehand either. I am not sure if that is standard practice for restaurants to serve a big party first before the rest of the customers. I was confused because people that came in after us were also receiving food before us. Our salmon rolls finally came and by then we were absolutely famished. The salmon avocado maki roll was okay. It wasn't "wow", but it wasn't bad. I was just happy we received our food. We devoured it in seconds, hoping we would receive the rest of our order soon. Next, we received our "fusion" sushi. We had only ordered one set but received two instead. We wanted to send it back but we were still so hungry, so we just kept it. DON'T GET THE FUSION SUSHI. To be fair, I didn't order it. I let my partner choose the "mediterranean roll" which was served with bell peppers, lettuce, lemon juice, and I think crab meat and some raw scallop. It really wasn't great. Maybe it just wasn't to my palate. Lastly our tempura came. It was quite nice - crispy, fresh, and a yummy dipping sauce. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough to pick up from the disappointing visit. Pricing was quite steep for what we received. We weren't sure why we received two sets of the fusion sushi because we spoke in German and were quite clear with the quantities. However, we bit the bullet and just ate it because we had waited so long and didn't want to order more food and have to wait even longer. Overall, Sansaro is good if you aren't used to having decent sushi at reasonable prices. Sometimes the wait can be stupidly long if you just happen to be there when there is a big party. Don't get the fusion sushi, but the regular maki sushi aren't particularly outstanding either. People from Sydney may be especially disappointed with the price and quality you receive here. read more

It's a bit pricey (but most sushi in Munich is) and it's really nothing special. They try to use bio ingredients when possible which is nice and the quality is better than most other places in Munich, but because Munich is not a great city for sushi in the first place most people would think Sansaro is one of the better ones. I would eat here again but I didn't marvel over the food by any means. They also tried to tell me I couldn't use debit card and my bill was over 20 euros...The service was very average. read more

Really pleasant place to eat out! Reference to the beloved Japanese movie creates the atmosphere of familiarity and makes you apt to try the famous noodle soup. Sushi part is represented vastly, more then traditional cuisine. Prices are moderate, service is attentive and understanding the needs of clients.
