Freaking epic ramen. A small place on the corner full of people and for good reason. Their spicy pork ramen, Tantan, was absolutely delectable, bursting with freakin' flavor (highly recommend adding the black garlic oil if you're a garlic fiend like myself). The Veggie Miso ramen offers a much milder taste, but still satisfying and full of rich umami flavor. The Takoyaki, oh my god maybe the best takoyaki I've ever had. Nice crisp outside, soft inside, and topped generously. Nice curated selection of beer and sake. Our waitress was fab, always quick on refilling waters and so friendly. Tiny hole in the wall ramen joint in a more lowkey residential part of Astoria. It is very easy to miss if you aren't looking for it. There are a few tables inside but I do not recommend for large groups. I got their paitan ramen which is chicken broth based with a unique twist on chashu (leaner cut with a chew similar to ham). The broth is satisfying, not heavy and did not leave me bloated. The noodles were chewy and is the wavy thick style. I also appreciated how it comes with a full softboiled egg by default (not a half egg like most places). I also enjoyed the spicy bite of raw onion that was added to the broth. The only ding for me was that my ramen was supposed to come with bamboo shoot topping per the menu description but was a bit disappointed that it was missing. A very solid ramen joint in Astoria! The chicken karaage was 10/10, huge chunks of meat, perfectly seasoned with extra black pepper on top, and very crunchy. The aioli was like a spicy mayo. I got the kuro ramen which is their normal ramen with charsu pork and black garlic oil. The broth was delicately light and the addition of chopped raw white onions makes it perfectly fragrant. After reading rave reviews here I came on a weekend to grab myself a bowl, and was surprised at how long the wait was to get in even though I'd come fairly early in the evening. We put our names down, and after around 30-40 minutes of waiting tables started to turn, and we were ushered in. This place does need to turn tables due to its popularity, so if you're here for a leisurely meal, no you're not. We were seated, given water and menus, and around five minutes later our server wanted to know whether or not we'd made a decision. My date got their vegetarian option, and I went with the gyokai, a seafood based ramen, which was rich and flavorful. One thing that got me here was the price of chili oil. Charging a dollar for a little extra squirt seems steep to me, but whatever, it helped take my ramen to the next level. Definitely will be back here. read more

The seafood broth had a clean-tasting, bonito flavor to it which I really enjoyed. I also really liked the texture of their noodles and you can't go wrong with getting a side of their chili oil too. Parking was easy to find since we were fairly close to the residential part of Astoria. We sat down. Menus were simple to read -- only a few things to choose from, which is good. We ordered the pork gyoza, miso ramen, and a bowl of kuro ramen. The food came in a reasonable amount of time. The pork gyoza was fried on a small skillet that they bring to you. Hot, flavorful, and juiciness from the soup inside -- definitely a great pairing. I ordered the miso ramen -- the chashu pork was quite generous and tender, the chicken broth was flavorful with fats, and the noodles had the right amount of bounce that I enjoyed. The ajitama egg was soft and what I expected from an egg. All these different components made the meal quite fulfilling. I left full, but not stuffed. The service was great. It seemed like there was only one server and she was friendly, welcoming, and quick. Water was always filled. This time I got soupless tantan and my partner got delux ramen. We also got gyoza for an appetizer!! Coming from Japan and being away from home, I am very grateful to have such an authentic ramen restaurant nearby! The food was delicious and especially the gyoza really reminded me of any ramen restaurants back home. My partner said the gyoza was the best he's ever had and the chashu in the noodle was again, nothing like what he's had before. And i agree, they are really really good. 3.5 stars?? This was one of the top 10 ramen places in NYC according to Beli so I decided to try it out. Came on a weekend night at around 7pm and had to wait 30-40 minutes for a seat. Reminder that you have to go inside and ask the front desk lady to be placed on the list as there's no sign up sheet outside. While we waited, my friend and I biked to Levain and ate some cookies which is always my favorite restaurant hack - eat dessert while you wait, life is short anyways. I ordered the Paitan Ramen and I thought it had some elements that were pretty good, and other ingredients that were meh. I appreciate the lightness the chicken broth although it felt a bit watered down. I thought the chasu was pretty interesting as it kind of reminded me of pastrami with the seasoning rub on its outside. Also I appreciate it was thick cut. The other parts of the ramen were not great - I didn't love the egg as it didn't have enough flavor and the noodles itself seemed like it came from a packet. Overall, would not say it's a top 10 ramen in NYC. However, +1 for the hardworking service lady who was handling the entire front facing part of the restaurant by herself. read more

My visit here was perfection during one of the first cold afternoons this season. A small establishment that thankfully didn't get too overcrowded while we dined. The server plays every role: hostess, server, runner, takeout manager, cashier, etc. You can see that service slows down a bit with just one person doing everything. But as long as you're not in a rush, this is a delectable experience. While the ramen was good, it didn't stand out too much more than any other quality ramen restaurant. The chashu pork, though, was noticeably better than other ramens I've had. The standout, however, was the takoyaki appetizer! Absolutely the best I've ever tasted. Perfect batter, octopus chunks, flavor, everything. And it arrived on an adorable molded serving dish so that every little ball had its own little snug fitting place. Yet another eatery I try out secondary to social media. I did not know of the existence of this place up until a few days ago. I am glad that there are more authentic Asian restaurants in this neck of the woods. I am not sure if all their ramen broth is chicken based, but both the ones we ordered were. For me, it was different. I wouldn't say "different bad" but couldn't say "different good" either. The noodles were at a perfect al dente. Their chashu also came across as different; firmer than what I am accustomed to and also sliced thicker than most ramen shops (in my experience). They serve their gyoza on a miniature cast iron skillet, pretty nice, but fall short at how the outer wrapping/layer simply fell apart (every single one) when you pick them apart (as they were all stuck together). My 12 y/o felt the tuna poke bowl was good and plentiful. The place is very small, as I am sure you can discern from the pictures, the tables are made outta that plywood that looks as though they compressed wood scraps (but they are finished with paint and varnish), you sit on stools and there is little room for personal belongings as many small Japanese eateries. And I would say this place holds up against a couple of my favorite ramen restaurants. Although it is kind of far from where I live, it was worth the trip. The restaurant is quite small. They specialize in their creamy chicken broth. And they have a unique take on chashu pork. I thought the broth was delicious, and the pork had a pretty strong ham flavor. I personally don't like ham so I knocked a point off for that. Their takoyaki is also delicious I also enjoyed their fried chicken app too!
