Sonora doesn't have many restaurants, so we were glad to find the only steakhouse in town! It has a steakhouse "feel" to the decor, too. We split the ribeye, which was cooked as requested and had good flavor. The server was nice and helpful, and suggested a half order of onion rings to go with our meal, which was perfect. You MUST try those hand made onion rings! The baked potato and veggies were fine. The check had a tea on there we didn't order, but she took it off with no issues. Wife said this place was really good as she had been here many times before but several years passed since. 1 hour from home for us and never been here till today passing by to go home from Fredericksburg. Wife did the grilled chicken with bacon added but the bacon never came out, she never got charged for it so no loss I guess. My steak bites were really good, tender, medium, lean. Veggies were heavily soaked in olive oil for sur ebut beyond that good. $23 seemed a bit pricy for the meal I got with 1 side. $20 woulda been about right. Did have a good pound of cooked steak though so no complaint there. Wife said her sandwich was OK but not great. Homemade roll was nice but bacon and avocado with the chicken and swiss cheese woulda made it better she said. I'd think so too. We had left El Paso around 1pm on the way to Austin, and we knew that opportunities for decent food would be far and between. It would be too late to eat in Fredericksburg, and who really wants to eat in Fort Stockton. So, I timed it and actually we were going to be in Sonora exactly on time for dinner, around 7PM, and I had been to this steak house before when visiting the Sonora caverns and knew it was good. We ordered two delicious $28 ribeyes, which they tell you is going to be 10-12 ounces, but looked more like 14+ ounces to me, and we got it with a baked potatoes and the veggies, and everything was delicious. The ribeye is as advertised, juicy and well marbled, so it's quite enjoyable (they say it's a man's steak!!). The lady who served us was very friendly. The place is typical of this area, with old photos and nice booths. Overall, a very pleasant experience in this area where it is hard to find something. Remember you are in the middle of nowhere, so don't go there expecting 5 stars service from a high-end steak house, but for the price, I thought it was a great choice. read more

Had the rib-eye. It was larger and thicker than expected. Cooked to my requested - med- rare. Only problem was that it tasted like it was cooked in old grease or old butter. Stopped in for the lunch buffet on a Sunday. Food & service were good. The buffet was $16.99 per person & included drink & dessert. We came here a few times years ago & the food was always good but back then it smelled so bad like cigarettes that we just chose to go other places. Now it does not smell like cigarettes at all, not even the old stale smell from the past. The buffet had chicken fried steak, chopped steak & catfish. Veggies included green beans, mashed potatoes & fried okra. There were 3 different kinds of pie for dessert, lemon, chocolate & coconut. Only downside is that they charge a card processing fee but it's on your ticket when you get it so there's no surprise when you check out. Im not a picky person but Don't stop here the food is ass. My family ordered filet mignon and it was tough and The steaks have no flavor, to make a good steak all you need is garlic butter and thyme. They say they use their own fresh local meats so I had a burger but unfortunately they overcooked it and it was super dry. I prefer a more dry meat that sauces can compliment but this was extreme. I could tell the meat was quality and would have enjoyed it immensely had it been cooked at most medium well to well but this was over-well. Chicken fried chicken had the chicken fried steak batter which was standard but not great. If they offered to comp my burnt burger I would probably consider returning on my way back but will skip since these are expensive mistakes that we the customer pay for. Sutton County Steak house was a mixed bag of fun...or not! We intentionally showed up around 1:00-1:30 PM because we had driven by the day before around lunchtime and the place was packed. When we walked in it looked like a tornado had hit the inside of the place. All the tables were un-bused and the floor was covered in trash and food. We were sat at one of the only reasonably clean tables, in the back corner, which sooted our needs. Our waitress was frantic complaining about the mess and I assume the lack of help. She provided us with menus and after awhile of fretting, she returned to take our order. The special was out of the question because it was the buffet that was ravaged and destroyed by the lunch crowd, only a few crumbs remained. I opted for the Chicken Fried Chicken. I was surprised at the fact it came with only one side...I opted for mashed potatoes and had no option for veggies to round out the meal, this seemed unique in this part of the country. The food came out in a bit of time, not quick but in a reasonable time all the same. The chicken was hot, tender, and flavorful, one of the better that I have had recently despite its smaller size. The potatoes were just OK, as was the gravy. By this time the waitress had calmed down and service improved a bit but it still wasn't impressive. My husband and I travel thru Sonora at least once or twice a year. Each time we have enjoyed a really good meal. This time we asked for a recommendation and we really were glad we followed thru with the suggestions. I ordered the chicken fried steak and my husband had the fried chicken sliders. He was told they didn't come with condiments and asked if he wanted some...that was a complete waste of time on the waitresses part. The sliders were awesome without any sauce of any kind. He ate all 3 of them without "extra" and thoroughly enjoyed every bite. The steak was well cooked and wasn't coated in so much batter you couldn't find the steak which is usually the problem and I really enjoyed it. My wife ordered a salad it came missing 2 items listed on the menu (olives & bacon). Aside from that she enjoyed the salad. I ordered the ribeye steak with mashed potatoes and grilled veggies. Steak was cooked correctly but was seasoned lightly, but was very tender. The sides were good. They seemed to be short handed but were doing a good job keeping up. Need to turn down the AC felt really stuffy in there dining room. Bathrooms were in need to a cleaning. The fattiest and most gristle steak I've ever had. "Hand cut steak". Costco does a 10xs better job cutting a steak I can cook at home. It was was very unwelcoming and ugly. The woman that seated me was behind a huge counter and pointed her finger. I write a book about what I didn't like about this place. The 3 people in the table next to me did NOT get sour cream for their baked potatoes on a $100 dinner because the waitstaff was too lazy. One of my favorite food stops between El Paso and San Antonio, I've been coming here for years. My favorite item is their chicken fried steak. I think it's one of the best in Texas. Their menu also indicates they do too. I don't come often enough to know when it's on the buffet line and when it's not, but I think it's mainly weekdays and Saturdays. I've come on Sunday and it's not on there. They say they are also a butcher shop and cut their own steaks in the back. Try their homemade pies as well, especially the banana crème. read more

Diners Drive-Ins and Dives anyone? This little gem is home to the worlds BEST onion rings. No joke, they were to DIE for. Some how thickly breaded, without being oily. Two flavorful rings of onion in each ring. You really tasted how fresh the onion was, none of this frozen oniony goo in oily batter crap! Best part was the visible flecks of pepper in the batter. MMMMM! I also had cornmeal fried Catfish. it was perfect! The catfish wasn't over cooked. The batter had cornmeal but was not too grainy. Once again, it was fried but not oily, and very flavorful! Almost didn't need any of the tartar sauce! Grilled Veggies-A bit oily but delicious and fresh. Steamed Veggies-Mushy, Terrible, Tasteless......and OILY?! The steamed veggies were a discolored soggy mess sitting in an oil and water soup. Ick. The server was busy but acceptably attentive and very friendly. The wedding party I was a part of was one of the biggest things in Sonora that weekend, and we got a nice little discount on our huge meal. Yey for good family business ethics! I found this quaint little place while cruising down I-10 on a cross state marathon. This is the kind of restaurant that you hope to find while on a drive like this -- Ultra friendly staff, great food, one of a kind environment all at reasonable prices. The Main reason I pulled in was Nancy's review that the Chicken Fried Steak was the best ever! And i must concur. It was the best CFS I have had in my life. The menu claims the recipe is 35 year old family secret and gets Kudos by someone on the Food Network ( I forgot her name). They lay that beautifully battered and tenderized slice of steak down in a bed of mushroom gravy and then pile a side of fries on the plate (or a baked potato). They all soak up the gravy goodness awaiting your onslaught. The funny thing is the small 5 oz. serving is only $1 less than the Large 10 oz. serving - so just go with the large!!! If the salad bar had a little more variety to it I probably would go with the 5 star rating - it was a little plain. But then again this is west Texas... people don't eat vegetables out here do they? read more
