Public Service Announcement: Poland has added a Dairy Queen to the list of American Fast Food…read moreFranchises (McDondalds, Burger King, KFC, Subway and Starbucks) - Welcome to Poland Dairy Queen! For those of you who are DQers - Don't get too Excited - there are no sandwiches or real food at this location except for some ciabatta things that don't count. They don't taste bad (there is a bbq chicken bacon thing that's ok but i wouldn't get another one), but they aren't standard menu items. Of course there are the ice cream menu staples - dilly bars, buster bars, blizzards and ice cream cakes. Banana splits and sundaes are available along with dipped cones and Moolattes. Missing - Slushies :( For those of you who are NOT DQers - Dairy Queen is like American Grycan more or less. It's an ice cream place that prides itself on thick milk-based ice creams. Blizzards are vanilla ice cream blended with bits of candy much like the McFlurries you can get at McDonald's (we are consistent). Blizzards are so thick that they can be turned upside down and the ice cream will not move or fall out of the cup. Dilly Bars are vanilla ice cream dipped in semi-sweet chocolate that hardens and forms a shell on the outside. Buster Bars are the same except they have peanuts in them. DQ's ice cream cakes are a must try if you've never had one. A cross section would reveal a layer of vanilla ice cream over a layer of crunchy cookie bits over a layer of chocolate ice cream. The cake is most often topped with whipped cream or decorative gel if anything. Moolattes are frozen coffee milk shakes that come in different flavors. The rest of the menu is fairly self explanatory. The main difference between DQ ice cream and Polish ice cream is the thickness and the sweetness. DQ's is very thick and more sweet than Polish ice cream. It comes in less flavors and is generally less frivolous. If your favorite part of going to get ice cream is mixing a bunch of flavors and syrups and fruit and making these eccentric concoctions that have no rhyme of reason to them, then the only thing on DQ's menu that might make you happy is the banana split. While I quite like DQ ice cream and I'm thrilled to death that we have another familiar face in town, I'm sad that there is nothing like shredded chicken or bbq sandwiches on the menu, or chili cheese dogs or even little cheeseburgers. Oh well. One other thing - it's CHEAP. Very Cheap. Most ice cream treats are between 4 and 6 zlotys. The Moolatte I got was like 9 zlty, which is way cheaper than getting a frozen coffee for 15 zlotys in some place like Costa Coffee. So even if you are slightly curious, it won't cost you anything to go and try some DQ.

It was really a very weird experience. I went in and simply ordered a portion of ice cream. Was…read moretold that, in order to have my ice cream, I have to go to cash register first, get a slip and come back. OK, what ever. A big sign said clearly: "One scoop to go 2.90zl". So I went to the cash register, found someone to help me and ordered one portion to go. And here things started to get interesting! I was told 7.90zl. That peaked my interest, so I payed 7.90, curious what I will get for this amount I went to the place that actually scooped the cream and got... a scoop. The women scooping did not even look at the bill I was holding in my hand... A little dumbfounded I asked why I had to pay so much more than advertised. The scooper said she doesn't know and I have to go back to the cash register. Here I was told that it was my mistake, that I have to know what I'm ordering. If i have any complains I was to talk to the manager. "Where is the manager?" "She is busy with a customer, you have to wait!" Now I'm getting slowly pissed- who the hell am I then? I just went to Magda the manager, who was sitting at a table with some people. With a melting ice cream in one hand and a bill in the other I explained my problem. Magda said there is nothing she can do because of some Polish financial laws and if I want my 5zl back I "Have to talk to Mr. Grycan". Now, mind you, the entire conversation involved me, the manager (Magda), the cash register lady and the scooper lady. No one was helping the customers. Looking at the clock I estimated that it took about 10min in which no one at the store was being helped and the Grycan corp. was paying for these three, very lost, employees. At this point I just mentioned the soon to follow Yelp revue. Just then, Magda opened a cash register and handled me my 5zl. (Yey Yelp!) All I want to know- WHO THE HELL IS TRAINING THESE PEOPLE??! PS Ice cream, kinda melted, was real good.
