My group had just visited the Library of Congress and walked over to Cafe Recess for lunch...just a little bit closer than Sweetgreen. I saw someone walking out with frozen yogurt and thought it was a frozen yogurt joint. Thrilled with excitement on a hot summer day. It is not a frozen yogurt spot. But they have freshly made salads to order! Fried brussel sprouts and all kinds of delicious options. Whoooo. This was an exciting find despite the slightly higher prices (if I ate out everyday). I would have insisted my entire group eat here except 1) they're kinda lame and need American boring stick to your bones and make you want a nap food 2) there wasn't enough seating for a big group especially with the working lunch crowd out and about. There's a little frozen yogurt selection with the original tart flavor (my absolute fav...this is the only flavor I ever order) and it is indeed tart. I love how it tasted very clean and pure without a lot of other preservatives or sweeteners or junk. And I chose my 3 toppings: Raspberries, Blackberries, and Granola. I would also recommend asking for the agave nectar to sweeten it up. My mouth was so refreshed and clean afterwards. It did not have a sickly milking feeling. My heart was entirely grateful as I continued on to enjoy my hot afternoon. Another friend I was with was craving Froyo after we stopped here but soon realized (because I looked it up on Yelp!) it was a 30 minute walk North. Sorry no Froyo today! read more

Okay, I'm a fan of Sweetgreen. It's a local fast casual, healthy eating success story and they make the best, local, truly better for you salads. They source their ingredients from local farms and rotate their menu with the season. It's summer and one of their salads is an AMAZING elote salad. Second time this Sweetgreen of Capitol Hill has screwed up my order. And you can't call them, you get some automated texting service to complain which hangs us on you. Never again. Second time also utensils were not included in the order--are they in that much of a hurry. But really, no one can call and have a live person to answer the phone. How disingenuous. Oh sweetgreen, how I love you. Your salads are pricy but delicious, and I appreciate a changing seasonal specials menu. I also appreciate your rewards program--I just earned a free salad (after spending more money in a month than I'd like to admit)! sweetgreen is a chain, and there are a handful of locations in the DC area. I have been to them all. This one, close to the Capitol, is my least favorite, but that doesn't mean I'll stop coming here. Beware of the long lines at lunch and even at dinner time. The sweetgreen app on my phone solves that problem, however: order ahead and pick it up while snickering at the poor suckers waiting in the long and loud line. The only downside is that if you use a military discount--you can't enter that into the app when you order ahead (as far as I know!). My favorite two salads are: 1) harvest bowl 2) one that I customize myself with double falafel, hummus, carrot chili vinaigrette, quinoa, greens, and whatever veggies I'm feeling. I casually named it "T Dizzle Dazzle's Lunchtime Delight," and think that sweetgreen should put it on their real menu--with that name. Don't forget your free bread! read more

I stopped by for lunch and made a custom salad. Lots of great, fresh ingredients to choose from. I didn't completely love my salad, but that was probably due more to my choices than the place itself. The mesclun mix was too sharp and earthy for my liking, and I probably would have been better off with a mix or romaine. I chose falafel, avocado, tomatoes, peppers, mushrooms, asparagus, and the tahini cucumber dressing. The dressing had a great creamy consistency but wasn't too heavy. The falafel, however, was weird. It is apparently baked instead of fried, and was served in these weird muffin tin shaped mushy pieces. I also got a hibiscus fresca drink with my meal. Very bright and fresh flavors, and served unsweetened. There were a few other interesting seasonal drink options, including a lemonade and an iced chai. read more

I am super surprised that this is my first review for Sweetgreen because I am constantly begging my coworkers to walk up Cap Hill with me for lunch. On one sunny springy day in January last week I convinced a coworker and we were on our way... I highly recommend that you check out their new grain bowl. Oh so yummy, you can add all your favorite toppings on a mix of wheat berries, barley, quinoa and shaved kale. I went with portebello 'shrooms, roasted sweet potatoe, corn, tomatoes, chicken and goat cheese. If that wasn't beautiful enough they top it all off with a squeeze of lemon and sriacha. SO GOOD. Do NOT order online for this location. It is faster to just show up and stand in line since you end up standing around anyway. The app does not save any time. Their pickup for online service is always a mess, and I've tried it multiple times since it is one of the only healthy options in the area. The app will tell you when to show up, and my order is never ready in time. Today I waited 30 mins per the app, then showed up for pickup, and again it wasn't ready. It took a long time to get help because a lot of others were standing around looking angry too, and nobody seemed available to assist. If this had been a one-time occurrence, that might be ok, but there's clearly a management problem at this location that prevents them from adequately serving a crowd at lunch time. Nobody appeared to be directing traffic or guiding staff on how to resolve issues. It was bad. From the time I ordered to the time I got my food (and after waiting around some more for anybody to help), it took about an hour to get a pretty basic salad from a "fast casual" establishment. I come here often and get my custom combo with avocado and feta with a mix of spicy cashew and lime cilantro dressings and some fresh squeezed citrus. Typically the avo is $1 and the feta 50 cents, but today I was told avo is $2 and the feta...their cheeses generally...a meager single measuring tablespoon's worth of low cal feta cheese...was $1.50. I asked about it, and asked where this new pricing was listed, and the gentleman told me it was listed in the paper menus. I grabbed a menu. There werent any prices listed for any salads, nor are there any of the additionally priced items like avo or feta in there. As for caloric content, there is virtually zero caloric content for arugola or kale. Come back to honesty Sweetgreens and lower your pricing. Pennies add up. Thanks. read more

I'm visiting D.C. And this was the best find ever. I like to eat healthy and affordable and this place is exactly what I was looking for. Salads are huge, delicious and as locally grown as possible. All utensils are compostable and staff is super friendly. It gets super busy during lunch hours, but it's lunch hour in capital hill where everyone tries to eat healthy so yes, it's crowded. Sweetgreen is a cute little made-to-order salad shop that also has some yummy drinks and frozen yogurt. After doing an outdoor yoga class and more biking than I am used to, this was the perfect stop for a healthy and delicious pre-lunch. My friend and I split the Watermelon and Feta Salad (~$9), and I ordered an iced Chai ($2.75). The salad came with arugula, kale, cucumbers, watermelon, mint, sunflower seeds, tomatoes, feta, and a vinaigrette. While the salad was a little light on the watermelon and tomatoes, it was a good combination. The iced Chai was yummy as well. The actual interior was fairly large and also had four outdoor tables. The service was not fast, but it was not crowded so it was OK. I don't think this place could handle any kind of crowd, though. read more

Came here after I was starving from museum hopping this morning. Normally I'd go to CAVA but I'd heard good things from friends. I got the "It's Back Beets Don't Kill My Vibe" salad as a preset, with carrot chili dressing instead because I was too lazy to craft my own entree. There was a bug in my salad. lol. it was a little cockroach/scorpion-looking thing. I asked the manager for a refund. And he was able to do that and offer me a gift certificate. Which is fine... but there was still a dead bug in my salad. I also asked him if bugs happen often (it was my first time here and i thought it'd be funny to ask). And rather than saying something to the effect of "no, this never happens" he said instead, "we get a lot from local farmers." "oh, you get a lot of bugs from the lettuce leaves?" Fact is, though, I fainted here once and cracked my head open on the floor and I swear to God, every employee there stopped what they were doing, helped me in every way they could, flagged down the police, and were super kind. AND they put my salad in a to-go bowl for me to eat at the ER. Take that, hospital food. In California we have places like this. They're pretty yummy. And so is Sweetgreen. The difference is that they don't charge you $12 for a cobb salad back home -- where it's still overpriced at $9 -- and they give you more actual greens. I think some salads actually weigh less than their price in $1 bills. But I'll still eat here multiple times a month because I live in a corrupt, tasteless capitalist society where most of my peers (in this case the House staffers who think it's cool to eat at Sweetgreen) put up with crap like this. That doesn't mean I can't rant on Yelp about the unfairness and lack of value in it all. Guacamole greens, spicy sabzi and district cobb are all worthy salads. Throw money at them. read more

I want to state that I LOVE Sweetgreen. When I worked in Rosslyn I used to take the gamble of long lunches just to get the guac greens at their first Georgetown store. While living in Bethesda, I would frequent the Bethesda Row location at least once a week. When I got a new job on the Hill, I jumped for joy that they were finally bringing a salad joint to what can sometimes be a forgotten part of town. That said, I am continually disappointed in my experiences at this location. While the ingredients are always of the highest quality, the service is flat out BAD. If you want to go anytime between 11:45-1:30 expect an extremely long wait - as well as make sure you get everything you ordered as a majority of the staff is unfamiliar with even the most basic of the salads. It's also incredibly frustrating when you order a sweet flow (frozen yogurt) and you receive vastly different amounts while paying close to $5 for a "small". I just wish that the management would ensure A) that the staff would be knowledgable and trained and B) that there would be enough staff on hand to handle such a crowd. At the end of the day, I think that they are quickly becoming a victim of their own success...this location just can't handle the volume in the manner for which you expect when paying for a $10 salad. If this is your first time going to Sweetgreen, make sure you visit the Georgetown or Logan Cir. locations as they are always on their game. This is such a great menu and the food is always good, but unfortunately my repeat experiences (2-3x a week) have left me looking to other choices for lunch. read more

Came to Sweetgreen after a few hours of sightseeing. I was uber hungry and wanted something quick and healthy. I ordered the Sabzi as a wrap (I believe it's wrapped in a whole wheat tortilla). Sabzi includes: baby spinach, spicy quinoa, white beans, raw beets, radish, basil, sprouts, dried cranberries with a carrot chili vinaigrette. I asked the guy behind the counter for medium amount of vinaigrette. I think it still needed a little bit more. The wrap was tasty with great textures but there was definitely something missing to it and I couldn't quite pinpoint what that something was. Long line? Check! An over-priced salad? Check! A full tummy? Check! The atmosphere of Sweet Green came across as very Euro to me, especially with the exposed brick and the wood tables and stools. Salad options are fine. I had the the Guacamole Greens. Oddly, they scoop out the avocado in one chunk. I'm not certain if the "tosser" is supposed to break it up, which did happy a bit. I basically got 2 big chunks of avocado. The slice of bread that came with the salad was very tasty and served warm. I also tried a bite of my coworkers frozen yogurt, which was extremely good and tasted like real yogurt. I did not get a drink, and the two side items offered looked tasty (one was spicy broccoli and the other was quinoa, I think, so obviously not memorable and I didn't taste them). My biggest fear was that I'd eat the salad and bread but still be full, and I wasn't. Overall, if I'm going to buy an over-priced salad with ingredients that aren't all that special, I wouldn't stand in such a line. read more

Gotta love Sweetgreen! Feed your crunchy, granola soul in this fantastic, locavore DC institution. Everything about this joint screams happy hipster hippies, and the food is great! My recommendation, on a nice day, is to get your salad to go and picnic on the back lawn of the Capitol, taking gratuitous selfies throughout. Yes, friends, your Facebook/Instagram/Myspace? (is that still a thing?) friends will be drooling with envy at your gorgeous food and G-6 lifestyle! The food: Generally, dodge the insanely priced veggie juices ($8, really???), always add bacon, and remember to compost your trash! I typically spring for the seasonal, because I like to live dangerously. So far, I have never been disappointed. But still, add bacon. The District Cobb is delicious and rich with its avocado, bacon, and egg in addition to top-notch greens and an excellent dressing. A bit pricey at $11.50, but it's easily two meals. The Earth Bowl is not my favorite, but that's because it's primarily a warm grain bowl (and I was craving greens). So, if ancient grains are your jam, this is the bowl for you! And the Misoba is brilliantly well-balanced. If you're not a salad fan, this is probably the one for you. Nice Asian flair with the familiarity of a West Coast salad! Conclusion! Sweetgreen is a delicious, healthy lunch/dinner that might bust your lunch budget but will certainly satisfy! read more

Come here for the salads, not the frozen yogurt. Compared to other frozen yogurt places in the area theirs sucks monkey balls. It tastes watered down and not that creamy. There are not as many topping choices as other places and they tend to have a lack of good fruit options. Now onto the good part - the salad ingredients are always super fresh and I think they have creative combinations for the salads that you order by name. The dressings are yummy and the chicken comes hot on top of the salad. I would never order a make your own salad here because the toppings add up quickly and I know I would go overboard. I came in for soup because I was cold. The cashier I got was just as cold. He was a thick, older Hispanic man who I presume was a bit racist because I received subpar customer service, yet I witnessed him smiling and greeting a woman who was Caucasian, which I am not. Example? I watched him ask her if she'd like bread for her soup and I had to go ask him for bread for mine. I, too, want to hate this place for selling me an $11 salad. However, one bite and you taste a difference. The abundant ingredients are so fresh and delicious, including many which are locally grown. There's a chalkboard stating what farms the fruits and veggies come from. I created my own salad and loved it. I enjoyed the cucumber yogurt dressing mixed in. Also, I normally am leery of shrimp at fast foody types of places, but Sweetgreen's is nicely seasoned and served warm in the salad. It trumps Chop't anyday. yum. read more

Quick service that is friendly-how many places do you visit during lunch rush that have a cashier who says "thanks for coming in today!" They're smart about their ingredients, their packaging, their use of energy & the design of the shop as well. Speaking of the design, I find the Capitol Hill branch particularly spacious & comfy compared to Dupont's. Today I had the Sabzi, yummy. Baby spinach, quinoa, white beans, beets& dried cranberries. It's nice (and rare) to get something easy at lunch that not only tastes good but is good for you. I like the fact that Sweetgreen lists the farms they use on the website. I'm not entirely sure I'm ok with being a person who goes to Sweetgreen. It's like when you have that friend in high school who has always been nice to you and seems like an intelligent, nice person, but he or she also shows signs of possessing a dangerous ideology that will, one day, wreak havoc in the world and reinforce the most oppressive aspects of the socio-political realm in which you live. What I mean to say is: I like the salads and yogurt at Sweetgreen, but I see signs of what could become an imperial expansion. I mean, I assume the first people who went to Starbucks back in its Seattle only days were like "wow, this place is cool and provides me with good coffee and has a great name. It's so great that we live in Seattle where there are a couple of Starbucks." I'm sure if the owners read this they'd think "Hey, we aren't like Starbucks. This is BS.", or maybe they'd think "Yes, we're going to be rich". I don't know, but when you read their philosophy or whatever on their website, it looks like it could have been extracted directly from Starbucks. It's all "we're nice; we love people and the planet; you guys are our friends and so are our workers and suppliers...we give back, etc..". They have 10 sites already in MD, DC, VA, and PA. Bet next year there will be more....then more...then....yeah... I mean, does the fact that you opened a place with decent salads and yogurt (or decent coffee), mean that you then have to expand and expand and do more and more? My favorite places are usually the ones that don't do that. My point is not that they are evil, necessarily. So a friend told me to try this place, specifically the caesar salad made with kale. First of all, who eats raw kale? I don't even like cooked kale. I checked out the website, and my curiosity got the best of me. I went in, saw all the great looking ingredients and couldn't decide between a salad or a wrap. I finally decided to order the caesar salad, but I added a few things...so it really wasn't a caesar salad when I was done. First, kale is AMAZING in a salad. I can't believe I've missed out on this for so long. I will still never eat it cooked, but I don't think I want another salad without kale. Thank goodness my combo worked, except for the goat cheese. The online order is available in 15 minute increments, but they will usually just ask your name and make your salad if you arrive early. Im a BIG fan of frozen yogurt. It's sad that there is no decent froyo place in Capitol hill. The last time I had frozen yogurt was from their georgetown sweet greens at least more than 4 years ago and yet it was so good that I still remember its veey creamy texture, but not so heavy with the perfect tart flavor. However I visited this place in 4 years and the froyo was NOT the same. Its texture was so choppy, icey, slushy, far from creamy and way too sour almost like sorbet. I love Sweetgreen, but the last two visits have been a little disappointing. During my visit before today I noticed that my server was chewing gum. I found this to be unprofessional and unsanitary. Today I ordered the monthly grain special, Mexican Corn Bowl. My server filled the bowl with the salad and toppings, but no grains. When I spoke up and commented that I thought the salad came with grains, she was short with me and said that the grains were in there. I apologized and told her I didn't see her fill the bowl with any grain. She didn't double check, but moved along. I took my salad to go and when I got to my office there were no grains. The salad was still delicious, but I was disappointed that the server didn't take the time to check the bowl before selling me the product. A little curtesy would have guaranteed I was receiving what I ordered and would have been a kind response instead of the short answer. I hope that the staff will make a few small adjustments. Removing gum when serving food and being considerate to costumers. This is a wonderful spot for lunch and these small changes would take this location from good to great. read more
