It's not the biggest place but there's plenty of seating in the back where there's a small terrace (with heaters for colder weather.) As you'd expect of any Gail's, there's a large selection of fresh bread, pastries, and cakes. There's also soup available every day and a small menu of cooked food which includes some trademark items such as salmon & pancakes. Prices are a little on the expensive side but I suppose that's to be expected. The queue on Saturday and Sunday mornings is straight out of Hell. So if you want a relaxing brunch after a weekend morning stroll... maybe go across the street to The Empress. Dog-friendly. Child-friendly. Yes, they take card.

All the baked goods are made at the nearby Hampton Hill premises and then brought to Hampton village. This is a popular little bakery, especially on Saturday mornings. You can buy bread, cookies, cakes and pastries, along with freshly made sandwiches. The Saturday staff is mostly teenaged girls. I can, however vouch for at least one of them, as she is my daughter. The service is friendly and reasonably efficient, and prices are about what you'd expect from a local independent bakery. Yes, you can buy sliced bread cheaper at the supermarket, but isn't a freshly baked, locally produced product more satisfying?

I also had a hot chocolate (I don't drink coffee often), but my coworker had a latte and it looked good. This shop is now on my regular rotation in London...it's always a great day when you have cake for lunch!

My toasted chicken, mozzarella and pesto salad panini was nice, although fairly short on the chicken; the bread itself was also a little too greasy (as a result of being toasted with too much oil or butter). However all was not lost, I followed this with a freshly baked brownie, yum! Would certainly return to sample more of their desserts. My only gripe on the sunny day I visited was the limited seating outdoors compared to the French cafe. Other than that no complaints!

The owners claim dedication to the dying tradition of afternoon tea and they certainly have gone all out to maintain that unique British flavour that so many generic coffee shops have almost wiped out in London. Every detail, from the elegant crockery, the ornate homemade cakes and the rosy faced waitress, perfectly recreate a time when a nice cup of tea and a civilized chat was enough to fill an afternoon. Indeed, the atmosphere was so effective I wished I was going home to listen to the gramophone in front of a log fire. After worrying about the possible effects of drinking so much tea I left, content with the world and happy in the knowledge that there are still corners of London devoted to being a little bit British.

There was a funny moment when I dropped a ginseng tablet on a plate of brownies by the till and everyone looked suitably horrified til I explained what it was. The waitress took it well tho ;)
