Overpriced ice cream that is nothing special. They do have nondairy options though, which is appreciated. Kids seem to like it, but it fits the mediocre standards of the area. Service is fine. It was 8pm and there was a line of 9 people in front of us shivering with barely any shorts on. I then thought, this ice cream must be good if people are waiting outside for it in the cold with no pants on. It was pretty good. To start, thank you for opening 10minutes early today when you noticed we had a 2 yo and were patiently waiting on the picnic table in the shade in the 90+ heat! Then that baby cone... the perfect size for a soft serve with sprinkles for that happy 2 yo! This place is always packed when we drive by on our way to our daughters in Upton. Now we know why! Pineapple soft serve reminded us of Disney and the chocolate Vanilla swirl was yummy. We will definitely return for your Richardson's Farm hard ice cream options; they sounded delicious! read more

First and foremost: the ice cream quality is great. I'm more of an "exciting and unique" type of ice cream girl but when I come here, I choose the Oreo cookie flavor. It's JAMPACKED with cookies and it's just...YUM! They also offer unique sundae options (see photos below & zoom in). S&S is the only shop around who sells flavor burst (bubblegum is my mom's favorite), so that's another reason why we would choose to come here. There are a few reasons I'm giving S&S 3 stars. #1) $4.50 for a 1 scoop KIDDIE size ice cream? Are you freakin' kidding me? 2) cash only is a pain in the ass. I get it, they've never taken credit cards and most likely never will. 3) they aren't the friendliest bunch of employees so that along with the prices, I only come here MAYBE twice a year. I just had a very unpleasant and concerning visit to Swirls & Scoops to cap off my Easter holiday that EVERYONE should keep in mind (especially if you have children). I arrived around 6:30 today (4/21) and approached the window to inquire about a couple of flavors on the menu and ask if either was gluten-free. I made sure to explain it was an allergen. The young lady working the window said she had no idea and to hold on. She came back with an old sheet that listed ingredients for various flavors. The flavor of interest "frozen pudding" was not on the allergen warning list so she deemed it fine. Sounds good, so I ordered a cup of it, paid and started to eat it. However, I immediately realized after digging my spoon in that it was white ice cream filled with large pieces of cookies (big 3/4" pieces) and what looked like cake crumbs. Since cookies and cake are not typically gluten-free and seemed unexpected I approached the window again. The conversations that followed left me dumbfounded: Me: "There's large cookie pieces in my ice cream and those normally aren't gluten free. Can you check again on this flavor just to be sure?" S&S Employee: Looks down at ice cream and casually says: "Oh that's probably just cookies from another flavor. We use the same scoops on all the ice cream. You just got whatever was left from another flavor that was in the scoop already." Me: "Oh...Well, don't you see how that's a problem from an allergen perspective?" S&S Employee: (Stares at me blankly in silence) Me: "Someone could get sick if you gave them peanuts or something they're allergic to and you shouldn't mix two different ice creams. That's why you have an allergen list right?" S&S Employee: Stares at me blankly again for a few moments before saying in a huffy manner: "So do you want me to get something using a clean scoop?" as if I've suddenly become a burden. Me: "Uh yes please-I think that would be best." She walks off and brings back another cup of ice cream-but this time it's an entirely different flavor then I ordered. My previous white ice cream with cookies was now a heavy fruit and raisin infused mix that tasted like a liquor. The conversation then went like this: Me: "Excuse me Miss, I ordered the Frozen Pudding ice cream." S&S Employee: Yes, that's it. Me: "But this is filled with fruit and raisins and doesn't look or taste like the last one." S&S Employee: Pauses and goes over to another S&S employee and holds a quiet conversation in corner. After deliberation they both come back and announce as a team that it's frozen pudding and frozen pudding is fruit and raisins and doesn't taste like pudding. Me: "Oh, well what did I have before." S&S Employee: "Frozen pudding" Me: (Realize that I'm dealing with two young employees who have no idea what flavors they're serving and have now resorted to just lying to get rid of me. At this point I just thanked them and left and threw away the ice cream when I get home as the flavor was unpleasant.) In summary, though Swirls & Scoops has a supposed allergen list it's entirely useless for three important reasons: 1) You may wind up with an entire scoop of another flavor you didn't order because they mix the scoops across all flavors by admission. 2) The servers don't seem to have a firm grasp now which flavors are which and seem to be guessing. I'll probably never know what I ordered or received today. 3) The servers don't understand what an allergen is and why it's a bad thing. If you are like me and can't deal with gluten you may just have a night of sickness in store for you. However, if you're allergic to peanuts you may just wind up hospitalized or dead when they hand over your Vanilla cone- which could be filled with a bunch of peanuts in the middle (hey everything gets mixed here). Really, this place is a lawsuit waiting to happen. My suggestion to ownership is spend an hour educating your workforce, clearly mark flavors with universal symbols in the windows, and separate scoops used (like every other ice cream shop in the country). Most importantly-be involved! The staff seemed completely clueless and there didn't seem to be a senior manager involved in operations. My job as a consumer is not to teach and explain food handling to teenagers at a place of business. read more

I am giving 2 stars because the ice cream is good. As for the service, an F for Failure. We went at noon yesterday and there was an elderly lady that was working. Apparently the only one working. The line was a mile long and the lady was extremely slow, but that's not the reason for the 2 stars. It's the attitude the lady had. She began speaking completely disrespectfully and it's not the first time she has. She has spoken rudely before. Here's a reality check lady - take a class in soft skills and learn to do your job properly. As for the ownership, hire better staff and more people so the lines aren't a mile long. read more

I just moved right down the street from this place this winter. I couldn't wait for it to open so I could check it out. My husband and I finally got around to it last night. Well, it wasn't worth the hype we built. The ice cream was good, but it was not mixed AT ALL. I ordered a bananas foster sundae which was $5. The top was a mess of whipped cream, way more than I like. Some cinnamon was sprinkled on top and some bananas placed around the edge. The ice cream was good except that I had to bite several large chunks of ice throughout it. The entire bottom was caramel. If I wanted to just pile ice cream with some toppings, I'd make it at home for 1/10 of that price. For a $5 sundae, I'll drive to a Cold Stone Creamery where I know they'll mix it up really well and hold the ice. They wouldn't make my husband a flurry from the flavor ice cream he wanted. They only make flurries with soft serve. Another thing that makes them not as good as Cold Stone or even Dairy Queen. I'm guessing that means they don't make shakes from all of the flavors either, just soft serve. I'm not sure. His birthday cake sundae was hard as a rock. Broke the plastic spoon. He has sensitive teeth so he couldn't really eat it until it warmed up a bit because it was so solid he had to bite it and his teeth couldn't take it. Live right down the street but now go out of my way to get ice cream instead of going here. The workers are very nice but the lines are long and the wait is slow, very slow. We are talking 20 minutes to order a small ice cream cone for 4.00. The soft serve and hard ice cream both have a chemical taste. The cones were stale as well as the toppings. It is located in a very busy parking lot/retail center. You just sit in a crowded parking lot. There is a lake across the street but not really a place to sit and enjoy. I live about a quarter of a mile from this ice cream store so naturally I end up going a few times every summer. Its not terrible ice cream and you always see people that you know while you are there. Now that I think about it that is why people go, it is a town landmark and if you have lived in Grafton before one should go here in hopes of reuniting with a few old friends. The problem is that there are only four places to order ice cream and the same four young ladies serving it. So sometimes, you can wait forever for any dessert whatsoever but thats OK because when you eventually get through the line you might not even get a chance to sit while you eat. I'm so glad that I live near a local ice cream shop. I have been here at least three times and each time was a pleasant experience. It is true that their portions are huge. Every single time I had to get the kid size (1 scoop), but I guess it's worth it for the price. They have a variety of flavors, but I like to stick to my favorites. I've been going to swirls and scoops for many years and I have never been disappointed. Location is great and service is excellent every time. The servers are super friendly and take pride in their work. Their ice creams are huge and the prices are totally reasonable, not to mention delicious! On summer nights it gets very busy but the lines move pretty quick. I ordered the banana foster sundae like one of the other reviewers and I thought it was fantastic; too pretty to even eat! I think it is good just because of nostalgia and sometimes it is not worth driving to someplace better if you are already in Grafton. The lines are long despite being well staffed, and service is very slow and not particularly warm. As it get towards the end of the season the ice cream seems to decrease in quality (chunks of ice in it, stale toppings) so it is not worth the price. Long story short: pros: only ice cream in town, enough parking. cons: cash only, long lines even when there are few patrons, not a good place for people with allergies to eat. read more

The ice cream quality seems slightly above average; it doesn't taste like Bliss ice cream and can't quite tell if it's Richardson's. The portions are big, and that's a great thing in my book. The service was fast and friendly and the prices were very reasonable. I was a little disappointed in the flavor selection, but that's my own fault for being kind of picky. On the last visit, forever, I asked the gal making my cone to give me "less ice cream" as I had dinner a short time ago and did not want to have a "full cone." She obliged and still charged me the full price. I am an old school professional who ran a few restaurants in my day. The proper thing to do is to reduce the price, even if by a smidgen, and let the customer know that you did it. I will not be going back. For those who may think that this is not a big deal . . . Yum yum yum! As everyone else says, the small is TRULY HUGE. But the ice cream was so amazing that I ate the entire thing. Probably three full scoops for the small. I ordered Oreo cookie ice cream and it tasted like it had been freshly crumbled into healthy chunks and folded into the creamy vanilla base. I wish there was more seating outside, but people mostly just ate in their cars in the parking lot. There are two picnic tables on the side of the building, and two more next to the road flanking the store sign, so it's nice to sit there and look out over the pond. read more

The reviewer below me obviously doesn't like crowds and blames the shop itself when in reality.. this place is Packed to the gills with people because of the incredible product. I can drive Just a few minutes up to the town common and have ice cream over at the Country Store where you can find tastier ice cream, happy people scooping your ice cream and eat on the Gazebo on the common instead of the dreaded parking lot at Swirls and Scoops.
