It's taken me four years of living in the area to finally take the trouble to properly locate and visit Dulwich Woods. There's something slightly lame about that, yes, but it's also in a really weird place and isn't that easy to get to by public transport. I know it's a hell of a long walk from my house, at any rate.
So, armed with a puppy and two friends I set off three weeks ago to find the woods. Thankfully we managed to find by far the easiest and most direct route which is the train from Herne Hill to Sydenham Hill. Once at the station it's a short walk over to the left until you're in off-road terrain - first a pleasant pathway then, turning off through a gate on the left, the woods themselves.
How exciting for a young puppy to have free reign in the woods, while still in easy reach of a newsagents! We all had a very enjoyable wander about the place, which seemed massive until we reached the far fence and had to turn back on ourselves. We still managed to get thoroughly lost after going up a hilly bit to the side of a strange fenced off bunker, because at some point Dulwich Woods became Sydenham Hill Woods, I lost all sense of direction and we all suddenly felt the urge to go home.
I had a lovely time though and will soon be back, perhaps with some coloured string to guide me home. read more
