My eyesight is a debacle. Since age four I have worn glasses, dorky glasses. Every photo of me as a kid has me in nerdy tortoise shell specs. My profile shot is me at age 6. Turns out I didn't even need them. When I got to uni I just stopped wearing them, to improve my chances with....um....Contract Law. I developed near perfect vision right thru Uni and beyond. Later I learned that my problem was a lazy muscle (why should my eye muscle be any different to the rest of me?) and it would have cured itself if my eyes hadn't become dependant on glasses. That bloody Dr had me wandering around my whole childhood with a Donald Duck patch on one of my lenses and doing dumb eye exercises when I didn't even need anything. Sheeeesh !
Anyway with age and.... with age my eyesight deteriorated again. I needed reading glasses for close work and books and computers, glasses for everyday day normal vision, and contact lenses for golf, all with different prescriptions. Ever worn contact lenses? You only need to watch some old footage of Nick Farr Jones scrabbling around the ground trying to find one of his during a test match at the SCG to realise that they can affect your judgment to the point of insanity. And I had to use hard lenses - agony.
I was forever losing my glasses or contacts, scratching the lense, breaking them or forgetting them - always the pair I most needed. When they broke I couldn't get the lense back in the frame because I couldn't see the tiny screw.
It all came to a head three years ago when some dickhead broke into my car and stole my briefcase the day before a huge exam. No reading glasses. Bugger.
Enough is enough and off I went to Dr Ilan Sebban. He said he could put in intra ocular multifocal lense implants. I told Binga I was getting implants and he said I had gone to the wrong type of Doctor, then he asked if he could have a turn which was truly disturbing.
Even on the way home from day surgery I could read number plates! Keeno is really pretty!!
Then, to top it off he did a laser procedure to cure an astigmatism and my vision improved to better than 20:20 ! Me ! - old four eyes!! I can surf and not bump into other guys, I can finally wear sunglasses ! I can read fine print and see people. I can unload the dishwasher without having to take a break whilst my glasses demist ! Golf - I dont have to worry about those bloody contacts and I can write down a score, without guessing where I'm writing it! Setting up a sound system, well actually I still cant do that but I can watch someone who can!
One of the first Yelp reviews I read was from our fearless community leader writing about the magic of eye surgery. Young Benyamin and eye, sorry I, are disciples. It really is as close to a miracle as I have come. Dr Sebban is a genius and a really nice bloke.
Life changing stuff.
