    Breakfast menu

Breakfast menu. A bit limited. Some of the items seems overpriced, but the dining room is beautiful and the Sylvan Lake setting is spectacular,

Read below for details, but I would only go back for a drink. Service: - We were seated outside right away, however no one approached our table for 10+ minutes. Even then it wasn't our waiter, just waters. - When our food was delivered, two dishes had the wrong sides and they said they would be right back with the correct sides. Everyone finished the rest of their meals before the correct sides were brought, and we had to ask a second time. - I ordered the Elk chop, but only had a butter knife. I asked for a steak knife, by the time it got brought out my food was cold. - They claimed they were very busy inside, we went inside to the bathroom and the restaurant was not busy at all. Food - everyone else at my table got burgers and they said they were ok. I got the $36 Elk chop and I asked them to have the chef prepare it however they thought was best. It was awful! Burnt on the outside and so well done on the inside it was difficult to cut and chew. View - We sat outside because I thought that would provide the best view. It was nice to be in nature, but there was a wall of trees blocking the amazing views advertised for being so high up. After dinner we were able to explore past the trees and got the attached picture. It was beautiful, but again I'd probably come back for drinks, but nothing more.

This is how a restaurant should be. If I'm going to spend the egregious amount of money to eat out…read morein 2026, it should be better than what I can cook at home. Too often do I go out to eat and spend $30+ to eat bland, overprocessed garbage food. This place clearly cares are but their quality. First - the menu items are unique and everything looked delicious. The quality of the food was top notch. The Eggs Benedict was pretty dang close to perfection. I'm a snob when it comes to eggs Benedict and it's soooo nice to find a place that actually does it right. They clearly made their own hollandaise and the eggs were poached perfectly. The service was excellent as well - the waitress was always checking in on me and she was very warm and friendly. Same with all of the other staff I've encountered. Honestly it's a little pricey but youre only going to spend an additional $5-10 per person over the greasy spoon diner down the street and it's wayyyy worth it. The restaurant was also very clean and inviting. I'm so sick of going to restaurants and the menus are dirty, the bathroom is disgusting, and the ambiance is dingy. This place was clean, fresh, and well kept up. Seriously one of the best restaurants I've tried in a while.

Fresh oysters for breakfast...in South Dakota? Yes, please!…read more My wife and I stumbled upon this gem on a recent trip through the Black Hills. A note about the restaurant from their website: Erik and Camillia opened Hjem A.M. in 2022 with one goal in mind: bring amazing breakfast food to the Black Hills. The food's focus is seasonality and is inspired by Scandinavian/American flavors. "Hjem" means home in Danish. Camillia and Erik found their home in Custer and want to be your home in the morning. Everything was divine. We wanted to sample the menu so we ordered "The Bob" (pancakes with lemon cream and lingonberry), Lobster eggs Benedict which they were out of unfortunately so the gave us some oysters as an apology. Their quiche of the day was a Mexican inspired elote style with a flaky crust and delightful crema, topped with some pickled onions. Their hollandaise was likely the best I've ever had. The accompanying potatoes and hash browns were perfectly cooked and seasoned. Ashly ordered a sausage patty that included a few chili flakes to wake up the tastebuds. I'd mentioned Ashly's birthday and they brought out a birthday treat - rice pudding topped with dried apricots and granola. And a candle on the side. We certainly felt at home at this lovely place. It had a charming decor and the service was top notch. Be sure to stop by on your next trip to the Black Hills.

They even were really accommodating for my son who just wanted a plain ol' meat and cheese sandwich (and they'll conveniently wrap up what you don't eat to take home!). I was so happy they had gluten-free bread available. Then the question was if I could have some of the meats so they were happy to look at the ingredient lists for me, which I really appreciated. I got the Italian and it was loaded with meat, mostly pepperoni, which quite honestly I would have done differently. I would have placed more emphasis on the other meats, but still, it was very good. Now were I dock a star is the sad gluten-free bread they gave me. It was clearly the last two slices of the loaf (yes, I got the butt) and if you know gluten-free bread, you know those slices at the ends are VERY SMALL. They don't like quite so small in my photo, but they were. I would personally not have served a sandwich using those. It made it hard to eat because the meat was so much larger and really, I kinda just felt like I was gypped a little. The interior itself isn't anything special...at all, lol. But I can get over that when they at least had a few tables to sit at and the employees were helpful and kind. I would make your way here if you're passing through!
