Over the eight years as clients, we have seen little staff turnover (and we still encounter retired staff locally who ask about our boys). Our two oldest were relatively easy kids, but our third child is quite "spirited". Cancare worked with us and the growth in our child has been amazing. All of our kids rave about the "banana loaf" and they all love the playground and teachers. Top all of that off with good managers and bus service provided to local schools - we feel exceptionally lucky to have access to the Cancare Child Centre in the NW.

Incident 1 As he was at the age where he wasn't napping…read more consistently anymore, (4 yrs) the staff was finding it a battle to get him to nap. One day my son came home and informed me that he had been flicked in the face by one of the workers and told "go to sleep you stupid boy." We don't flick faces in our house and I didn't feel like this was something he would make up. I confronted her with my son present and she denied anything. When we left my poor son looked at me and said "she's lying to you mommy". That broke my heart as a mother who just wants quality childcare for my kids. The director Rubina had my child moved from that room to the ecs room where the kids didn't have to nap. To my knowledge there was no consequence to the employee. Incident 2 My child was in the afternoon class so there were only 3 kids in the ecs room during the day. During that time there were no activities with those 3 children. I did however see them do things with the kids when there were more kids present. They were expected to play and get along. My son began to have conflict with one particular child and at times my son became so enraged he began to yell loudly, threaten to throw a chair ( which he never did/would) he would try to leave the room, he would ask to go to the directors office. At 5 children are learning to control their emotions and deal with their peers. I kept being told that parents were complaining about my child. I requested to meet with the parents of this other boy to see what we could do to try to help them get along but the director said they wouldn't do that. The last straw was when some of the other kids in the ecs room told me they were being told "nobody play with "Jacob". Now hes being publicly humiliated, ostracized and bullied. One staff member told me I should pray for my son and another was telling me I should be nicer to my child and another told me I need to talk to him at home. Like I wasn't doing my duty as a mother. A few months after moving him I found video on his Nintendo ds. He was trying to video this boys abuses and threated to tell miss mary. But He never did and now it was too late.HE has since been moved To a daycare and I have had no problems since January 7 months I didn't move my youngest child as IF my older was a problem child I didn't want to uproot the second one as well if this was going to be a pattern. Incident 3 My baby was coning home constantly with diaper rash. It was being cleared up on the weekend then come Monday night it was back Incident 4 My child is allergic to lotion with fragrance as documented in his file. The childcare worker although she cared enough to put lotion on his irritated areas (leg and arms) His file was not minded. As soon as I asked her to stop using it his skin irritation stopped Incident 5 It seems now that every time I go into the daycare I am signing incident reports about my 2 year old. Weather he's having a tantrum. doesnt want to join them for snack, go out to play or any other thing he's being written up. Ive been told his temper is exactly like his brother Incident 6 my son has been 3 for 3 months. When he is home he uses the toilet except for bedtime at daycare he is peeing in his pants so I now had to send him with pull ups. Incident 7 My husband makes the kids lunch and one morning he holds up a pill. A capsule with white powder inside and asks "what's this?' I had no idea as we don't take medicine.I told him I didn't know and he informed me that this was the 3rd one he'd found and he thought it might have been a vitamin or something I was putting in for him. I am so tired of talking about my issues with the daycare staff and I am completely uncomfortable even going in there anymore but I show the pill to the ladies who man his toddler room. They don't recognize it but I just wanted to be aware of what I was finding not only for my child but the safety of others because I don't know what in it. When I took it to the new director Miss Mary. She said she didn't know and that it probably came from my house. I was fuming and came unglued! The director from the other daycare called me and told me that she called licensing herself to report it but I haven't heard anything. I explained that its not my intention to cause trouble I just wanted them to know what was happening and I was mad that there was no parental support.. Incident 6 Surprise surprise another incident report! So I sign it and the lady looks and says " that's not your signature".....um I just signed it in front of you of course it is! Then I pick up my son and his pull up is more full than when he wakes in the morning. It was hanging off of him and it was obvious. I asked " don't you change their diapers?" she said that she wasn't his provider but she was the only one in the room along with another lady. She said he shouldn't be in diapers anyway. My daughter has complex learning needs. She is adopted and diagnosed with PTSD (trauma) and has a…read morenumber of challenges that make learning and focus for her very difficult. As she was to enter Grade 3 she was still not able to read. Her grade 1 & 2 teacher informed us repeatedly that they were unable to get her to focus on learning for more than only 5-10 minutes PER DAY during class and kept pushing ADHD meds as the answer. She is bright, engaging, she is creative, funny, and a great problem solver, very social. She also was diagnosed with a mild cognitive delay and dyslexic making learning difficult. She also presented with an Auditory Processing Delay. Oxford Learning in Crowfoot Calgary accepted her in on a trial basis, not being sure that she would be able to succeed in their program. They asked us not to put her on any ADHD meds but to allow to be alert for her learning with them. The managers and the teachers were nothing short of incredible. My daughter took to them very quickly as they were very careful with her and took their time to help her feel safe and secure in the space and with them. Her program was carefully and thoughtfully put together before we started. Now, after not even one year, our girl has progressed more than one year in her reading skills. She is confident, enjoys Oxford, looks forward to going which again is a miracle. Our girl often will askus not to make her go to school, but 3 times per week she goes to Oxford Learning and they have been able to maintain her focus for 45 minutes to an hour - WITHOUT ADHD meds. And, to add to that, they are providing one-on-one teaching in a quiet environment. My daughter is hyper vigilant and sensitive to all stimuli : visual, auditory, and even the feelings of the people in the room : much to filter for a small child trying to focus on learning. This environment works very well for her. Our daughter was assessed at a Kindergarten level of reading when she started with Oxford, and is presently reading at an end Grade 1 level, one year later. This means that she progressed at a regular rate of learning : one year of learning progression during one year - my girl can learn! She is confident, loves to read books, loves to read signs and labels out in the world as she goes along. This place has been our miracle when we had no other place to go for help and believe me when I say that we had looked at many other options, including private schools, and other possibilities for her. This is a Cognitive system of learning that a traumatized brain needs in order for the learning to make sense. And this is also what sets Oxford Learning apart - the system of learning is Cognitive learning. My girl cannot retain information, again consistent with a traumatized brain. Traditional learning relies on memory and information retention. Oxford takes a different approach and it works.

I was on phone with the owner Marlene several times before the enrolment and could tell she was really struggled and trying really hard to make this happen especially in the pandemic environment. No need to mention how great the teachers, food and facilities are. My boys are treated like families and are so happy and leaning a lot everyday. They even ask if they can go to the daycare on weekends :)

This daycare is great, the teachers are very nice and try to make each kid feel special. They know everyone's names and all the parents' names. Every evening after picking my daughter up, I receive a few photos of her with the day's activities and a full report, which is so nice to get and is very helpful. The curriculum is awesome, my 1 year old is active throughout the day, and they are so creative with activities: from art to music to crafts even at this young age. They also go for a walk or play in their outside yard most days if the weather permits. The food at the daycare is pretty good, but is somewhat grains heavy, includes a lot of bread, pasta, rice etc. Of course, kids like it. I try to balance it out at home by giving more meat and veggies.
