The Syrinx sculpture in University Park is a quiet little highlight if you like mythological artwork tucked into an urban green space. It shows the nymph Syrinx seated on a limestone stump, one knee pulled up and her hand cupped to her ear as if listening for Pan's music. It is a small bronze piece but feels surprisingly expressive for its size.
The history is actually more dramatic than the sculpture looks. The original Syrinx and its companion Pan were created by Myra Reynolds Richards and installed in 1923, but both were stolen over the years. Syrinx disappeared in 1959 and Pan in 1970. the city then commissioned Adolph Wolter to recreate both works, and his replacement Syrinx was unveiled in 1973 and placed back in University Park.
