Since I work from home, I do as much as possible to make my living space as attractive and pleasant as I am able without breaking my budget as a renter. For the past 5 years, I have 'made do' with limited kitchen counter space and no seating in that room. Sure, it's great to eat in the dining room, since that's what the room's function is, but I'm from a blue collar family and all meals were eaten in the kitchen and traditionally, all important decisions were made at the dinner table. As a teenager, I came out to my family at dinner so, yes, I know what I'm talking about. Going on more than 4 years, I had been eyeing kitchen islands. Since I am about as handy as a blind, pawless cat, looking was as far as I ever got. Last month, though, probably because it felt like I really needed to change up all the cooking and eating at home that I've done over the past 5 months, I went boldly ahead and bought an Ikea Tornviker kitchen island. Since I am Carless Warren, I paid to have it shipped, which gave me an estimated 1 month wait for delivery and 4 weeks to fret and plan. My initial glee and happy anticipation soon paled when I realized that if I did not find someone to come and put this together, it would sit in the delivery cartons until Hell froze over. Barring that, I would break it to bits in my frustration, whilst trying to assemble it. Thus, the Great Assembly Person Search began. I avoided Craigslist because it's been nothing but a dead zone in the past. No one I contacted there who was advertising handy person services ever bothered to call me back and I was not going to waste time again. The first and probably one of the oldest and best rated business for Ikea assembly had a long wait time and I knew that once the island was in my home, I would want it put together and in use immediately. Next, I came here to Yelp and did a search. Some businesses would not come to my area, others never responded to calls or e-mails. I started imagining how macho I was going to look wearing chaps and a tool belt as I deflty and swiftly built my new island, then quickly disabused myself of that fantasy when I remembered Angie's List. Like anything else, it was a crap shoot but I was given 6 names and numbers of businesses to contact for a quote. This one, Gandy's, got back to me the same day and told me they could have a handyman out to my home in 2 days time. How could I say no to such nearly instant gratification? Melissa, the woman who set up the appointment, was very nice on the phone so I was immediately put at ease. She gave me the name of the person who would do the work, told me he was always punctual, offered a number of payment options (check, cash, credit card and Zelle), quoted reasonable rates and told me to call back if I had additional questions. The day before the appointment, Sebastian, the person who was coming out, called to confirm the appointment and asked for a picture and specs on the piece he would be assembling so he would be sure to have the correct tools. Like Melissa, he was warm and friendly, sounded professional and made me feel confident that I'd made the right choice. On assembly day, Sebastian called to say he was looking for parking, and then called me again when he was outside. He was equipped with a mask and his toolbox and was indeed, right on time. I offered him a cold beverage or coffee, gave him brief instructions, told him I was available if he had questions but other than that, I would stay out of his way and leave him to the job. Lo and behold, he put the island together in the quoted period of time, did not interrupt my writing once, left the kitchen neater and cleaner than it was when he arrived and even offered to put the cardboard packing together for recycling. We chatted for a bit and I was so happy with his punctuality, friendliness and professionalism, I immediately started talking about using him for another job. I also tipped him for work done well. This is a family owned and family run business. In this day and age, that still means a lot to me. I was treated fairly, honestly, with courtesy, respect, friendliness and professionalism. The work was top notch. Now I can't wait to have my first meal in my 'new' kitchen. This was a really fantastic experience-from start to finish!

We chose Shane and Clear Vision Renovations because they were highly recommended by a friend. When the old door was finally removed, Shane and Mike had pointed out rotten wood around the door frame, and also rotten and moldy wood underneath of where the front door sat and also just inside of the front door where water had been coming through for years. Shane and Mike fixed everything. And replaced all rotted and damaged wood to brand new condition. The company we ordered the door from did not do their calculations correctly so the storm door was not going to be a possibility which was very upsetting because that was part of our dream to have the front door open and have fresh air coming through the screen on the storm door during nice weather. Shane and Mike made the impossible possible by building a custom build out with custom trim so that the storm door would fit into place and our door looks magnificent!!! Shane and his father Mike and their company Clear Vision made my wife and I 15 year long dream into a beautiful reality. I can't thank and recommend Clear Vision Renovations enough. We opted to supply the flooring and Mr. Perez even fielded a phone call when I was clueless about which transition piece to purchase, and he ultimately sent me a link to the exact product he recommended from the store where I told him I was browsing. Very pleased with their services and couldn't recommend them more highly for this type of work.

The next Day there was a piece that was sticking up enough to scrap the bottom of my Foot. I called them and they told me if would cost me another $300 to fix it right. my thoughts was why wasn't it don't right the second time. so they came and fixed it with me having to pay another $300 plus I had to buy to more boxes of the laminate. I also wanted some tile work done in my bathrooms and window sills that he gave me a quote on and told me to get the materials, so I did. That day he told me they didn't have time to do it, but would be back on Monday of next week. I then notice I had another plank they replaced sticking up out of the floor. I didn't see it because the pulled my area rug over top of it. the only reason I noticed it was because I stepped there and hear a crack. I then pulled the carpet up and noticed it. They did the same thing as the other one . They just cut a piece and glues it down instead of locking and attaching it in as it's designed to do. I then texted him and asked about they finishing the job with tile that I went out and bought the materials a month ago and sent them a picture of the laminate piece that they did. it showed the holes in and you can see the sub floor. I texted because thats how they always communicated. They would not respond to me. I then called and wouldn't answer. These men also did damage to my lawn my pouring out their buckets in my grass and left a bunch of pieces of laminate my grass without cleaning it up. I told them the second time they came to work in my driveway and not my grass. I even put a drop cloth out for them. They gave me a little attitude instead of just saying ok no problem. I also noticed that one of my receptacle cover was moving from being hit or something. I asked the father if he could put a little caulk around it for me and he seemed angry and said he didn't do that. He had a caulk gun right there, and I didn't say he did it. I do have pictures to share and will be taking action for the floor repairs. I just don't want to see them do this to anyone else. They are lazy and not professionals and will do all short cuts that won't last

I found Active Hammer Home Improvement via Facebook. I checked out their website and saw a deck they build that was similar to what I wanted. I called Garry for a free consultation and there was something about him that made me and my husband feel comfortable. We had a good feeling about him. The final design was a little different than what I initially wanted (which was out of Garry's control). I wasn't able to get a fully covered deck but Garry assured me that the partial covered deck will be just as beautiful. The process made me very anxious but Garry made sure to explain every step. Garry and his crew were very professional. Everything was cleaned when the project was completed. Regarding payments - Garry will work with you and I believe there is a discount for military families (but you should definitely confirm). We did 50% down, then 50% of the remaining balance, then 50% of that remaining balance and so forth and so forth. Active Hammer did an amazing job (as you can see from the pictures/videos). I definitely recommend them if you are looking to renovate your home.

Absolutely worst experience ever.. this company tried to get away with soooo many shortcuts!!!! The…read morejob took 4 months longer than expected because they have a clause that it could take longer because of the subs.. The foundation took over a month because his guy only worked on the weekends, We waited almost 2 months for the plumber to come finish, so many things needed to be redone because it was done wrong. The amount of time I took out of my life following him around and researching stuff that looked off... He constantly lied to me...I knew I was in trouble when I questioned the fact that he didn't put a double sil plate on, he said "well I guess if she noticed it the inspector will too" The more i questioned his work, the more belligerent he got with me. I had to kick him out of my house twice.. first time was because his work was terrible and he was talking down to me... his wife Jenn talked me into letting him back in to "make everything right" with the punch list. Promised me all would be good... The work he did made things worse.. my gutters/roof were leaking, my floor is still sticking up, he put the dryer vent so close to the gas that I can barely get the vent pipe on it.. on purpose. When I told him about the gutter not working (I went on my roof in the rain to video it) he threatened me and said "if I go up on that roof with you I will throw you off of it!!!!" Threw him out again. I allowed his workers to finish the job. We agreed to get the roof issues fixed so I got an estimate, they asked to get another for cheaper.. so I allowed their guy to do it, this guy did a few hours of work then kept cancelling. When the final inspection was done (before the roof was finished) the inspector said my lower roof had to have ice and water shield on the entire lower roof because of the slope, so I asked the roofer he chose if it was on and he said yes, Gary said yes as well.. they LIED to the inspector to get it to pass. Later I found a picture I took when they were putting it on... no ice and water shield!!! I held the final payment until the roof was done and the job completed.. now they want all the money and don't want to pay for the proper roof fix like we agreed. There were so many more issues with them that I don't have enough words and they won't allow any more pictures..I will say that Garry fixed most of these issues, however I had to follow him around, check and research everything every day or my house would look like this.
