After leaving rehab, I decided, due to my wife's excellent experience, to go to Isand Sports. I was given a program designed for my specific needs. I was closely supervised, and monitored. I began to recover based on Dan Donato's - and staff's- care and expertise. But I didn't realize how much i recovered until our first beach trip. When we arrived at the beach, we discovered that the boardwalk to the beach was washed away, and this necessitated a long mile and a half walk burdened with beach stuff. It wasn't until we returned to our car that I had managed to easily walk 3 miles in sand. Prior to my treatment, 20 yards on pavement was an achievement. Two major surgeries later, I'm currently a patient at Island Sports. I'm never alone either on the exercise table or the gym. I have osteoporosis,a paralyzed right leg, have limited use of my arms, and am taking a blood thinner, so a fall could be catastrophic. I am supervised and offered any assistance I may look like I need. And many is the time that while standing to do an exercise, a welcome hand is placed on my back to steady and support me. I don't ask for this, but the point is I DON'T HAVE TO. I feel safe and in very good hands at Island Sports and Physical Therapy in Nesconset. It is also a place that provides the kind of atmosphere that patients feel welcome and also have the ability to interact with other patients, if one desires. My best friend always goes to St. James, and while my father is in another facility due to needing more supervision, I don't feel they care for him the way St. James cares for my friend. The attention and compassion at St. James are unmatched, and they even offer iPad calls, something many other facilities don't provide. The staff is amazing, and I truly believe that comes from strong leadership. The head of this facility, Cristen Wei, was our case manager years ago and was promoted to Administrator. Because of my loved one's needs, we have used this facility for years, and I can confidently say I love all of the staff and absolutely adore Cristen. She is the most patient, kind, and compassionate person, and it's clear that she has created a culture where the staff goes above and beyond for their residents. Worst place ever!! The aides were rude and neglectful. My grandmother fell out of the bed and they…read moredid not have her sent back to the hospital to be checked out. Then family members found her twice hanging off the bed. Also, several times she was soaked and when asked the aides to change and clean her, we were given attitudes or was told they weren't the aide for the room and the aide was on break so we had to wait. Almost impossible to get the dr to come talk. Medication was given extremely late almost every dose. Social workers did not seem to care. My grandmother went in doing well, and went downhill fast. Then they screwed up the paperwork to transfer her to hospice at home and I had to get involved. Finally got her home where she passed two days later. Her death was due to neglect, she was in so much pain and I truly hope no one else has to deal with that place. It is a horrendous place and even had another patient tell us to get my grandmother out of there.
