PICK SOMEONE ELSE FOR YOUR CHILD!!!!!…read more Update: After reading my review, Frank Nelson sent insulting and confrontational text messages to my personal cell phone. He also texted our friend asking for information about our family. I am appalled. See review below for our experience: I have had my 7 year old daughter in training with Master Nelson for a few months now. We originally were invited by her friend and the location is super convenient for us. Despite what I am about to describe, she did have fun with her friends and when "Big Dave" was teaching her instead of Master Nelson. I'm honestly quite shocked to be the first One Star rating for this establishment. Master Nelson is well trained, and absolutely knows his craft well. It's a shame he's not a better teacher and person. In a class with children no older than 12, (most about 6-9 years old) I have witnessed first hand him belittling, mocking, pointing and laughing at, singling out, hitting (no I am not exaggerating, yes, hitting or what looks like a light spanking? Both with his bare hands and with a padded target), screaming inches from kid's faces, smacking giant sticks on the ground, do I need to continue? In the next breath he will tell the same child he loves them and then kiss them on the top of the head. I have had to do so much unteaching for my daughter as we leave. I have had to say to her "Master Nelson pointed and laughed at that boy and called him the Pillsbury Dough Boy, why is that wrong?" "How did you feel when Master Nelson screamed at your friend next to you for having her hand on the wrong hip?" "When he told the class and parents that the boy has some screws loose, do you think that was kind or unkind?" (This particular child is clearly special needs) I could go on and on with these lessons we've had to have after going to class. Then. I see his very public Facebook page, and the puzzle starts to come together. I won't write out any posts or opinions he has shared here, but suffice it to say that as member of the LGBTQ+ community, I feel utterly hated and unwelcome in Frank Nelson's establishment after having learned how he feels about people like me. I am completely disgusted and mortified to have paid this person to teach my child anything at all and feel it necessary to warn as many others away from him as possible. What I've learned after Frank Nelson's response on BBB.org: After reading my one star Google review, he texted me an insulting and confrontational message and subsequently texted another parent in the class looking for information about our choices. I chose to block his phone number to avoid further harassment. Yet here has made my reviews very personal and named my daughter on the internet and by his own admission has asked the other parents in class about me. He is a liar. There are more than one bold faced lies in his response. Just to name one, 5-6 times in class in an egregious understatement. He is ok with allowing random people to do his job for him without proper employment protocols. Now I have no idea if the one teacher I liked at this place was ever safe to be around my daughter at all. I'll be calling DCF next to see if there is anything they can do to help. Neither Frank Nelson nor his LLC has an active license to conduct business in the city of Orlando, with fines having been assessed as of the time this post was made. Frank: I will not be responding again. If you have anything further, I'd be happy to provide contact information for my lawyer.

Master Nelson is totally Kreese's backstory (military, still in touch with his teachers) but then he has Johnny Lawrence's attitude towards the kids (he can be hard on them, but from a place of care and compassion and truly having their backs). My kid is shy and I was really hoping this would help him come out of his shell a bit and get to know some other kids. It took him almost 2 weeks to actually participate in class, but the whole time the instructor and the other students were GREAT about trying to motivate him but not pushing too hard. Now my son looks forward to class, participates very well, and is learned a ton. It's everything I hoped for AND more.

I've known Jeff and Renee for almost 18 years since my son started training with them at 5 years…read moreold. There is no way to describe their level of friendship and commitment to their students. Example, a few years went by where we lost touch and when my son was a junior in n high school, contemplating his future, the decision to enlist or go to college was a BIG one. In an effort to help my son see all angles of the decision he would make, I put him in touch with several officers from different branches of government and reached out to Jeff and Renee as well. They were at our home that SAME day to help in this decision making process. Jeff plainly stated he was not going to talk my son in or out of his decision and would offer any information that could help based on his own life experience. Jeff and Renee showed up as if no time went by at all and needless to say, was very supportive and full of friendship! The visit ended when Jeff pulled up the video "Father and Son" and we all sat and listened to the words of the song which is forever etched in my mind to this day. I know this sounds really mushy but I can't make this stuff up. Not to mention the trials and tribulations they themselves had to muster through without giving up. True perseverance Fast forward to today, 5 years later.... Jeff and Renee remain a huge part of my son's life as mentors, friends and they are always a call or text away through thick and thin. This is a testimony of them as people. Indian River TKD led by them is more than just a local martial arts school. It is martial arts taught with the often lacking true discipline both mentally and physically. They instill the self confidence and will for the kids to succeed. Their philosophy is not your typical "you get a belt after time served or Kata learned." The kids EARN their belts, and therefore, it is respected. Your kids will NEVER forget their time here and will carry what they learn forever. As a parent of one of the kids for so many years, I promise you, the best thing we ever did for our now 22 year old son. AND, may I add, my son was not placed in martial arts for a disciplinary or behavioral intervention lol. Yet, I have seen so many parents do that. If this is you, do it. Tough love, discipline, a sense of belonging and self esteem can all be achieved here. Visit the studio and ask to read some of the students testimonials from years gone by. My son's is there too.

I've been attending school through Wah Lum for over 15 years now and I also went to China with Master Chan. I've studied some Kung Fu and Tai Chi at the school on Goldenrod but also attended many special sessions for anniversaries and cruises. I can't say any thing bad about these schools. They run a tight ship so don't think you are going to get off easy! You must train hard and take the training seriously. If you think they are going to let you flop around the temple and be lazy well you need to find a different place to be lazy. There is no lazy at Wah Lum!!! A+ school and Master Chan is the best. I will always thank him for the teachings that he has given me personally and also that privledge of learning at one of his many other schools. I will always think of this style and school as being my home away from home because they treat there students like family. Oh, did you see that I mentioned cruises? and the trip to China? That's because every once in a while they get the schools together and they go on trips. During those trips they practice Kung Fu and Tai Chi. My trip to China was amazing and we spent three weeks in China visiting the different schools and temples. The cruises are basic 5, 7 or 10 day cruises but the best thing is that you get to train at Kung Fu at sea! Pretty freaking cool!!! Check the schedule and find a time when you are able to go by and check things out. Bring your kids to have them check out the kids classes! Find a price plan which works for you and have fun getting in to shape learning traditional Kung Fu and Tai Chi!
