Honestly, Taco Bar has been the best taqueria I've had in the east coast. I used to order it almost weekly, in college. Their ingredients are fresh, quantities are great, and service is pretty good--given that it's not the most upscale setting. I would've given it 5 stars but they accidentally dropped meat on some of my vegetarian bowls prior (however they've always reimbursed us for mistakes, which is great customer service). The ladies working in the back work very hard and their labor of love does shine in the food. This place actually rivals SoCal mexican food. If you're in the area, skip Chipotle and come here to try their burritos, tortas, nachos, bowls and horchata, and tres leches. Also if you're brave check out their spicy red sauce! My friend and I were feeling a bit hangry after walking the bucolic grounds at the nearby Glenstone Museum (https://www.yelp.com/biz/glenstone-potomac) and my handy Yelp app suggested the Taco Bar El Guero. TBH, I've had this place bookmarked for over 5 years, and as I was in the area, this was the perfect time to finally check this bookmark off my list. If there is almost one universal truism when it comes to food establishments connected or are near gas stations, the food is usually ah-mazing! Taco Bar El Guero is located behind a Shell station (although locals tell me this has been other branded gas stations in the past), so be forewarned that parking is limited. TIP - there is another smaller overflow parking off to the side when pulling in...just be on the lookout for it. Luckily, we were able to find a spot near the front door, and walking in, you can be forgiven if you think this is a liquor store, since there are rows of wine as well as several fridges with full beer displays. But walk in further, and you'll see the counter to order food. The menu is extensive, so my advice is to snap a pic, step off the side to review, and then order when ready...so as to not block the usual long line of patrons waiting. We decided on a trio of tacos (Lengua, beef short rib, and the bistec), as well as the beef asada platter. The tacos were HUGE and overflowing with meat. The condiments/toppings are simple: onions, cilantro, and lime off the side. A green salsa verde also accompanies all dishes. Previously I wasn't a fan of lengua, but their version was fatty and didn't have an off putting "gamey" flavor with excellent seasoning. Bistec was also good, but a bit on the dry side. The short rib was the best of the trio. Tender braised beef was melt in the mouth tender. There was plenty of meat to use the extra corn tortillas to make 2 or 3 tacos. We were already getting full, but sampled the beef asada platter. For $11 (at the time of this review), it's a bargain. Three lean pieces of beef are seasoned and cooked on the flat top with a nice sear. When hot, the meat was tender enough to slice with a plastic knife. Take a few strips and stuff a tortilla with the beans/rice/lettuce/tomato, and you have a great build your own taco. With tax and a Jarritos soda, the total came out to approximately $26; I'd say this classifies as a cheap eat for two ppl especially since there were plenty of leftovers for the next day. If this place wasn't an hour away, I would for sure by stopping by here weekly. IMHO, Taco Bar El Guero is one of the better taquerias in the entire DMV. read more

This place is always busy. Delicious tacos de lengua but $6 per taco is a bit much for me. Still I should say they fill the tacos with meat to the point that you could make a baby taco with all the meat you spill. Guacamole and chips never disappoint either. The lime included with each taco is always very juicy. The ladies working here are extremely fast and nice. A few tables to sit inside and a couple more outside. This is a family favorite spot. Simple but quick, delicious, and great prices! This small, unassuming restaurant is co-located with a gas station. Very few tables inside (maybe 2 small ones) and a few more bigger ones back. Orders come out quick and are always correct. Forgot I reviewed this place before! This is still a delicious taco joint in the Rio Gaithersburg area. They still served tacos at incredible prices and loaded with meat, but I don't mind the salt content now. They also have other food as well, all really tasty. And the latin music they play just makes me want to dance. The downside is that they can be slow since lots of ppl come here. Parking is also challenging because they share a parking lot with a gas station, Lube Center, and a car wash. Also, I still think their tacos could use more veggies, but that's really minor. Was NOT prepared to have tacos THAT good out of a gas station, but here we are. I visited the Taco Bar with a friend who's a longtime patron. He assured me the tacos were official and he was 100% correct! The Taco Bar is to the back of a gas station, past refrigerated beers, wines, and other beverages. It's pretty unassuming, just a counter and a large menu hanging overhead. It takes up very little space and there are about 4 small tables nearby that can seat 2. I ordered the "Pick 2" platter option. I went with 2 steak tacos and the platter came with sides of rice and beans, and a drink. We sat outside on a fairly large patio with 4-5 tables with chairs. It was a nice day, so totally worth it! Our food was delivered and we dug in, and OMG! Those steak tacos were fuego!!! Well seasoned, moist, and no skimping on toppings. The beans were much the same, super tasty and great over the rice. I was wholly pleased and filled up by my meal. And the prices were super reasonable/affordable. Alright, though the reviews looked great, I was skeptical of this little hidden gem once I saw it was near a gas station. On one hand, it could be just that: a hidden gem. On the other, if I got sick from there, I'd assume it's because it was near a gas station. Luckily, it was the former. What an amazing hidden gem!! It's so hard to find authentic tacos in the area that are not overly priced but you can find that at bar El Guero. Food 9/10: the tacos slapped! I had the steak, pastor and chorizo taco. My least favorite was the chorizo because it was a little dry. I also had the chips and guac and you can tell the guac was made fresh. Service 10/10: the staff was super friendly and the food was prompt. Ambiance: no rating because as you can see it's mostly a takeout restaurant. Friday 11/10/2023 I had first heard about this place through Yelp and then also from a friend at my gym who highly recommended the spot. I made an online order for pick up through chow now and got: an Al pastor taco $4, suadero taco $4, classic pollo burrito $6.50, quesadilla pollo 4$, Torta Milanese half with melted cheese $8, and a chicken empanda $4.75. The service was pretty bad. My order was supposed to be ready at 7:22 pm but ended up taking another 15 pm and wasn't ready till 7:37 pm. Now after the delayed wait for my food you would think that would be it but nope, they completely forgot to make and pack my quesadilla pollo. Good thing, I made sure to check all items in my car before going home because I would've been very pissed if that had happened when I was home. For the most part the food experience was pretty mid. Both of the tacos were decent, the quesadilla was solid but nothing special, the burrito was standard, the torta Milanese was kinda different for me but i didn't really enjoy it, and lastly the chicken empanda was solid (stuffed with chicken but the chicken was bland and it definitely needed a sauce to enhance the flavor of the item). This food venture was very disappointing and underwhelming. I wouldn't recommend or come back: you're better off going to La gula Mexicana which is significantly better. read more

I think it's really cool that this restaurant is in a beer and wine shop. It definitely is like a hole-in-the-wall restaurant. As for the tacos, I think they're okay. I ordered a carne asada taco and a lengua taco. They had a generous amount of filling, but flavors were not very memorable. I also wasn't a huge fan of the texture of the steak. The steak seemed like a cheaper cut because the pieces broke apart too easily. If they use a different cut of steak or prepare it differently, I would try the carne asada taco again. I would order the lengua taco again! It was pretty good and I liked the way it was cut and prepared. I'm trying to find my go-to taco place and overall, taco bar el guero isn't it for me. This is truly a local's must know business to visit. This taco bar is tucked away in a gas station. Parking is not great, location could be better, and the food makes up for all of that. Inside the taco bar are shelves of wine and fridges filled with beer. This is the perfect one stop shop for a meal and drink on the go. I love that the menu clearly states that their beans are vegetarian. I also asked about the rice and was told that was vegetarian too. As a vegan you can enjoy the vegetable burrito or tacos without dairy. I got the burrito as it was only $6! In this economy what a deal! The first bite of the burrito was heaven. The rice is so well seasoned, the avocado really came through. It tasted so fresh while also having so many comforting flavors. I devoured this burrito with the side of green salsa it came with. For $6 this was a filling burrito! You cannot beat the price, and they do not hold back on quality. I am very excited to visit again. I totally agree - HIDDEN GEM I've been coming here for a little over five years for the best bang for your buck tacos. If you order 3 they do not hold back and it's like eating 5. However there is one thing about these tacos that needs work; the tortillas. Simply not even cooked and to some degree they seem to take away from the flavor of the tacos. They have mastered the art of cutting one lemon 100 times. For a quick bite or cute date, heck yes! Love this place but gotta leave an honest review and point out the weak points. If you're in the mood for a burrito bowl, the Al Pastor is a must-try. For tacos, the Churriqueso is my absolute favorite, and the simple Steak Quesadilla is perfection. My new favorite restaurant for Mexican food. Tres Leches: I normally don't like but this one is fire ! Tacos: they're filled with so much meat I only get 2. When another reviewer said like only 1 or 2 I didn't believe them.... I stand corrected. Pastor Taco: great flavor!! Salsa Verde: great flavor.. you'd be surprised at how some ppl really can't make salsa verde. Beef Empanada: SO good. Simply filled with shredded beef.... Lots of it. Seasoned well. This place probably has the lowest cost per pound of food in a 30-mile radius and I'm not joking. The burrito bowl pictured below has way more items (once you fill it up with veggies and other toppings) than a fully stuffed chipotle bowl. Oh and the burrito bowl is only $8 post tax. The tacos are roughly $4 post tax but look at the stuff/toppings/veggies that comes with it! You can select all of those toppings for mostly free! Some toppings only requires a quarter or 50 cents more. The taste is also really good! I've always added beef tongue (lengua for $2.25 more) in my orders and that protein never disappoints! The veggies and toppings all complement the bowls/burritos/tacos that I've ordered. My wife and I are always stuffed after a $18-$20 order. That is not easy to do in these pandemic inflated pricing times. I don't know how many times I've been here already but I'm pretty sure the amount is at least 10x a year for the past 4-5 years. They have some seating inside and outside but not a lot, so I think doing takeout is best. I usually get their tacos, but this time I got the burrito bowl. I got the pastor as my meat, pico de gallo, cilantro, red onions, and mild sauce on the side. I did ask for jalapeños also but they forgot but my friend gave me hers--adds that extra kick. The shrimp cocktail was not good and too sweet! I couldn't finish my small cup portion because of this. It was similar to having sweet salsa with lots of onions. I was not a big fan of the first carne asada plate i got (which is rare because I usually really like it) and they were very understanding and brought me out two steak tacos that are incredible! Had our first visit and I can't wait to go back. I was excited for a torta and impulse decided on the torta del Guero. I had the whole with breaded beef which also has: hot dogs, ham, mozzarella, lettuce, tomato, onion, avocado and refried beans (I skipped the mayo.) It was large, as they serve the whole on two sub rolls. I thought they brought two by mistake. Beef was very thin, but tender enough that it didn't fall out when you took a bite. First visit despite knowing about it for almost a decade. Ordered online for take out for a family of five. One pick two combo (mine)--beef empanada, two beef taquitos with beans, rice and the shredded lettuce, cojita cheese and sour cream usually on the taquitos on the side. Got the salsa roja on the side. One order of three tacos (the boyfriend's choice), one chorizo, one shredded beef rib, one al pastor. No pic of that because he opened it upside down. Finally for the other three an order of seven shredded chicken tacos to share, lettuce and tomato added. Everyone really enjoyed their food. The chicken taco lovers really enjoyed the chicken itself as well as the generous portions. Boyfriend liked all three tacos, but said the al pastor really stood out. I was the only one who got beans and rice, found the beans very tasty, the rice was pretty decent but better when mixed with the beans or with some salsa roja mixed in. I *loved* the taquitos....I was just ok with the empanada--nothing wrong with it, I just think the taquitos were better. Salsa roja was solidly hot AND good flavor! Will not be our last visit.
