For a chain taco place that covers the Rio Grande Valley and San Antonio, I was very impressed with this spot. A while back in early 2020, I did the Taco Palenque in Brownsville and wasn't that impressed since my order was messed up. After getting some tacos from this location, I'm fully back on board with the Taco Palenque train! I saw they have an app you can use to order and browse; plus you get $5 off the first time you use the app for your order so of course, I would take advantage of this. The Pirata taco is their signature (beans, cheese, meat) so I did the Chicken Fajita version of that. Also ordered an al pastor taco and a breakfast chorizo & egg. Upon arriving to the location, I decided to stock up on their sauces and salsas at their salsa bar (nice touch) inside while I waited on my order. After picking up my tacos, I got back to the hotel and dug in. No wonder that Pirata taco is their signature. It's massive, got great texture from the beans and cheese, and the chicken fajita was juicy and had some of that char taste with the onions. Put some pico de gallo and a little tomatillo salsa on top; it was a fantastic taco! The al pastor was also tasty and had a couple pieces of pineapple in it. And the breakfast taco was quite large; I added a little queso fresco to it and some green sauce; also killer. We need more locations like this where it's fast casual as you can order through the app, order inside, or do their drive thru. Both were medicorce. Portions looked substantial but quantity of meat was minimal and quality of ingredients was poor (e.g., low grade cheese and wilted lettuce). The salsa bar had some decent salsas; that was the only redeeming factor for our lunch at Taco Palenque, and when condiments are the highlight, that indicates a truly dismal establishment. I am just going to start off saying that the staff and environment was so warming and friendly that gets a star! So I had high expectations coming here because of all the reviews. This was my first time here, since I'm visiting from out of town. I ordered the number one which was a burrito with fideo. So the reason why I am giving this meal three stars is because of the quality, taste and friendly staff. I've had hundred of burrito living in L.A. then moving to Texas, I've had my share. Though this burrito had some flavor to it, I was unimpressed with the formation and hold of it. As soon as I unwrapped and bit down, the bottom fell out. So there I am making make shift nachos because, well my burrito was poorly wrapped. I am sure to be back soon and try their fajitas. Should have went with that first. A different type of Mexican food restaurant. You order at the counter and are given a number kind of like a McDonalds. You get your own chips and salsa as well as drink. There is a salad bar with pico, onions, all kinds of different sauces that is self serve. You then put out your number on the table and your food is brought out to you. Paper napkins dispensed from your table plastic utensils and foam plates. Ordered fajita plate and one taco a la carte, $16.43 with a drink. Enough meat to make 2 good sized tacos and still have some left. Beans and rice were good as was beef taco. Overall cheaper than some of the upscale Mexican food restaurants in town with similar food quality and flavor if you don't mind waiting on yourself, it's a good value. You get a serving of chips with salsa and some Refried beans to start of them we hit the Mango Margarita with chamoey and it was outstanding, simply delicious. We ordered a Sombrero Sampler that came with flautas, quesadilla, cheese empanadas, and some mini biscuit with beam and chorizo and was outstanding also. I had not eaten all day and had a very long drive from Austin. Taco Palenque was highly recommended to me (I had sampled one location in San Antonio previously.) Not sure what the difference was, but this place was excellent. I ordered 3 tacos and they were so large I could only finish 2 and took 1 back to the hotel. I ordered the Pirata taco which was a very generous portion of delicious beef fajita meat with beans and cheese. Once I topped it with a generous amount of salsa verde and pico de gallo & cilantro it was truly delicious. The picadillo taco came out pipping hot and was perfectly seasoned and delicious. Again, I enhanced the taco with salsa and pico and it was excellent! I really loved the large salsa bar with an amazing selection of salsas and toppings to select from. I came in mid-afternoon and it was not very busy so my tacos arrived quickly. I was impressed with the number of staff that were very diligent in refreshing the salsa bar and making sure any spills were immediately cleaned up. That has to be a real challenge during busy times, but they did a great job. As I was only in Laredo one night, I promised myself another visit before leaving town. Having grown up in San Antonio, I realized this restaurant is what Taco Cabana has wanted to be all these years! read more

Yum! I am a white girl in this Mexican town, and an outsider to this region. So my review is based on those factors. I understand this is a chain in Laredo, and thereabouts, but I've never been to one before. So this review is basically for other truckers and visitors to the area; not locals. I have no point of comparison. It was VERY BUSY, but I still was able to order pretty quickly. They have a full condiment bar (tons of sauces and veggies), and in the time it took me to put the condiments I wanted into containers, and wrap them up, my food was ready. I took it to-go, brought it back to my motel room, drank 2 lite beers, then opened my bag. I was concerned that the crispy tacos I ordered would be mushy by then, but they weren't! Not as crispy as if I'd eaten them right away, but still crispy! And they stayed together, unlike if they had been a storebought-type crispy shell. They were hands-down better than any crispy taco I've had from any other restaurant - be it a crappy place like Taco Bell or Del Taco, or a decent Americanized one like Taco Time, OR even a Mexican sit-down restaurant. These were better. You get your choice of corn or flour tortilla (I got corn), and they used ground beef, which I usually can't find when I'm at any authentic-type Mexican place. Next, I opened my side of rice and beans. I was initially disappointed to see that the rice had so many things in it, simply because that's not how I prefer my rice, but it was very tasty! The beans were even better. They were both so delicious! I only had a few bites of each, because I didn't want to get full, but I look forward to finishing them later! The real prize was the Piratita (Pirata Jr on the wall menu). It is a soft taco (I would have thought "burrito," but they have it listed on their taco menu), and it has refried beans, cheese, and a meat they call "fajita." I assume it's beef. OH. MY. GOODNESS. This was so amazing! If I hadn't been so full by this point, I would have run right back next door to get another! Not only was it DELICIOUS, but the meat was plentiful, and practically falling out of it. I will probably order a few more for the road before I leave Laredo. (And I did!) Anyway. If you're visiting the area, I highly recommend giving them a try. I spent a little over $13, and I got a lot of food that will feed me for another meal. ----- Update! It is 4 days later, and I just finished the last of the bag of Piratitas I bought for the road. I want to cry! Even 4 days old, it was delicious to the last bite! It's fitting that I'm reviewing this place tore back after a night of heavy drinking, because that's the same shape I was in when I ate at Taco Palenque. I'll use the dehydration, fuzzy head and nausea as a muse of sorts. Except I won't remember the acrid taste of bile this time around. I'm not that bad today. Having driven the length of Laredo (it's a pretty small town), I know that this is a chain restaurant because I saw about three of them in this tiny town alone. And it's too bad they don't have them here in Arizona, because the food was superb. The menu was all in Spanish (like almost everything else in Laredo) and I couldn't figure out what some of the more exotic options were, but there was plenty that this Mexican food lover could decipher, and as far as I could tell, there was no gringo TexMex on the menu. Solid. Since my delicate sensibilities probably couldn't have handled anything too substantial, I went with a carnitas taco and a plain quesadilla (mmm, grease, the greatest hangover cure ever). After placing my order and filling up my cup with jamaica (hibiscus flavored love!), I milled around and waited for my little silver parcels to arrive. Cincuenta y cinco turned out to me my salvation. Well, that and the condiment bar that was stocked with at ton of options, from cucumber slices to pickled jalapenos, with about six different types of salsa to bring the heat and kick up the flavor. I sat down, ripped open the foil and dug in. Suddenly there's a fiesta of flavor and I'm the guest of honor! The pork is melt in my mouth tender and the cheese in the quesadilla is ooey, gooey, chewy, delicious. It's too bad my stomach was being such a wimp and threatened to rebel when I was about half way through both offerings, because I was really digging that food. Haven't done dine in, no time for that. Drive thru isn't bad, the wait time is the only thing that is meh; very long wait. But at least you get good fresh food:) The fajitas are good, was surprised that they were since this is a fast food type of place, not really feeling the crunchy tacos with the ground beef so much, they aren't bad, just not for me I suppose. Taco Palenque is the most popular Mexican restaurant in town! Now I've lived in Laredo all my life, so I've eaten Taco Palenque (or TP's as the preps call it) a hundred times. Even though I'm still debating whether it's the best Mexican restaurant in Laredo, it is definitely the most popular. This I can guarantee: they have the best piratas in the world:P. A pirata, if you don't know, is a fajita taco with cheese and beans. If this is the first time you go to Taco Palenque, then automatically try the pirata, you won't regret it. If you are going with a group, you should check out some of the parilladas they have, or try one of their SEVERAL meals. If you want as authentic as mexican food can get in the U.S., then Taco Palenque is a solid place to go to. read more
