I was thinking of visiting Brooklyn, and going Tacony Island, if you know what I mean. Maybe to ride the Wonder Wheel and eat some Nathan's? I used to use this crossing to get to my friend's house who lived around the Cherry Hill area. At one point there weren't any Bridges around here, back when people used to take a car ferry. But no longer. This is a major crossing now. There are nearly a hundred thousand bridge crossings here every single day. It's $4 to get across, just like it is for some of the other Bridges around here, and Philly isn't bad for bridge prices compared to NYC and the DC/Baltimore area really. It swings open on one side and has a beautiful big archway that you can see for miles. It's gorgeous. While it's a good alternative to Interstate 95, it is definitely not as straightforward as with some of the other branches. They do, I believe, now have a well-designed alert system to let you know when the bridge opens and closes, and if they don't, it could be useful. read more

It is hard to believe that prior to 1926 there were no bridges across the Delaware River south of Trenton, NJ. Despite the growing American love affair with the automobile, the only way to get across that body of water anywhere near Philadelphia was to swim or take one of the two ferries that operated from bank to bank at Camden and Burlington. There wasn't a car ferry until 1922, when a private business started a service that was wildly successful, but not nearly capable of meeting the growing demand. So, the same entrepreneurs seeing the success of the new Benjamin Franklin Bridge just to the south that opened in 1926 as the longest suspension bridge in the world, organized their consortium to construct a span between Palmyra, NJ and the Tacony river ward in Philadelphia. Eighteen months and $4 million later, they had their toll bridge open for business. Rudolph Modjeski, the designer of the Ben Franklin and Manhattan Bridge in New York, did the work. The first year the average volume was 3,500 cars per day. These days it is over 70,000. The original $.35 toll has gone up to match inflation and is now four bucks. Keeping things local, the steel components were fabricated by the American Bridge Company of Trenton, NJ, an offshoot of the older Roebling Steel Works, where the Brooklyn Bridge was cast. This isn't a particularly efficient bridge these days, as it remains a drawbridge that raises up to allow ships to pass beneath, causing traffic to stop for 20 minutes with each opening. Too, the access on the Philly side it a problem as it has not been redesigned in nearly 100 years, except for modest improvement recently. Of course, it still is useful if your reliance on the trolley service hasn't changed since your great grandparents used them. Otherwise, better to plan for the nearby Betsy Ross or Ben Franklin, both of which are easier to use than the venerable but outdated TPB. read more

This is the cheapest bridge over to Philadelphia. It use to be $3 when I was growing up, but now it's $4 with inflation and the cost of living. I still prefer to pay $4 than to use the Walt Whitman , Betsy Ross, or Ben Franklin. This part of Philadelphia is actually much calmer and more family oriented anyway so I always feel safe when going over this bridge. read more

This bridge is both fun and annoying. It's fun because the bridge actually has some character compared the Walt Whitman Bridge or the Ben Franklin Bridge. It's a drawbridge and it's amazing to hear the openings on the radio traffic report. They know when rush hour is. Why do the ships need to use the river at that time? Uggggh, that's annoying, and so is the metal decking, especially when it's rained or snowed but that's life on the river. I don't really care for the cobblestones in Olde City, either. The best thing about the bridge is that it's a quick way to Cherry Hill Mall in New Jersey. You continue down route 73 to route 644, which ends up being Haddonfield Road later. If you live in the Northeast Philly or Bucks County, it's a lot easier than going to the Walt Whitman and taking route 38 to the mall. You know what's funny? I was out in the middle of nowhere on PA route 73--like 40 miles from the bridge--and what did I see but a sign for the Tacony-Palmyra Bridge?!?! I was thinking that it was a bit early. read more

The Tacony Palmyra Bridge is a decent alternative for getting across the Delaware. The things I don't like about the bridge and as most have mentioned is there are no warnings as to when an opening is scheduled. The other problem with this bridge is getting to I-95, its not as easy as using the Betsy Ross, BFB, or WW Bridges. I have ridden my bicycle over the TPB a few times and I am not that easily scared on my bike, but this bridge terrifies me. The guard rails are not very high and the wind can be strong. Believe me it looks like a very long way down from up there even though this is not an enormous bridge! Signs tell cyclists to walk their bikes but most people I see ride. The roads and route to and from the bridge on the NJ are good. Once on the Pennsylvania side, it takes a little time in traffic to get on to Aramingo and a bike lane. I much prefer the Ben Franklin by bike in terms of safety and view from the bridge but getting to the Ben Franklin through many beat up Camden city roads is not as pleasant as getting to Tacony Palmyra. The Tacony Palmyra does have some serious old school charm as a working drawbridge. There is also a nice little park on the NJ side. For $3.00 with EZ pass it is also a good value. I am not quite a fan of the Tacony Palmyra bridge but it is better then A-OK. read more

The old adage "you get what you pay for" is alive and well on the Tacony Palmyra Bridge. The $2 bridge takes you from a seedy spot in Philly to probably the seediest spot in Dirty Jersey, conveniently close to a large flea market & a few pay-by-the-hour hotels. I swear they purposely plan their bridge openings for rush hour too. The metal grate section in the middle of the bridge that opens for these random barges is terrifying. I say a little Hail Mary & close my eyes every time I have to drive over it, If you feel as though your self-respect & safety is worth more than $2, cross another bridge. read more

My to go bridge to get to the great northeast. And if I'm feeling cheap ill take this to get to center city as well and jump on I-95 South. A lil awkward getting to the highway from the bridge but its great if you wanna save 3 bucks from the Ben Franklin or Betsy Ross. I would suggest subscribing to their text alerts if you take it often so you are aware of the bridge openings. They can be quite a pain especially if you need to get where you need to go. read more

The bridge is only two bucks but if you ride your bike over it which is the scariest thing ever it's free. I don't really suggest riding your bike over it it's kind of dangerous and probably forbidden. However if you were to go to the Betsy Ross you would have to drive if you go to the bank Franklin Bridge you can walk or ride and that is an excellent bridge to ride your bike over or walk. Call me crazy, but i LIKE the Tacony bridge. Yes, it's small, and yes, the bridge has openings for over-sized boats, but knowing your way to and from the Tacony bridge can prove very powerful in avoiding traffic. I can't tell you how many times my knowledge of the backroads to get to this bridge has saved me from hours in 95 traffic. Scoff at it's size and age, but it has saved me countless times in my commutes between South Jersey and the Philly region. read more

Tonight on the bridge is construction work. Is just one lane of traffic going either way and you have to go really really slow.

This bridge costs $3 for EZ PASS customers and $4 for customers paying with cash. As I've suggested before in my other reviews, getting EZ PASS is a must when you're a frequent road trip traveller. This bridge does not extend very far (it's super short); it's a cute bridge, in my opinion! read more

Four stars for convenience, location and character. For comparison, the Ben would get 5, Betsy Ross 2, the Brooklyn a solid 5. Remember when this bridge was four lanes? With no jersey barrier in the middle; that was scary. The best part? Humming in advance of the steel decking to see if you can nail the sound it makes, the inner glow you get on the off chance you get it right. read more

It is excellent in terms of keeping people out of the river. It would be better if there were more lanes, it didn't go up periodically, or was cheaper. But think about it: how many things today so reliably deliver on their promises? This is a very good, sturdy, and reliable bridge. I'd give it 4.5 stars if that was possible. read more
