Great food for great prices. No long waits either, I'm not sure why I'm seeing people saying the waits are "long" you don't wait maybe more than 5-7 minutes for your food. I also see complaints about the condiments & them being "stingy", when idk how that's possible the condiment island is basically a buffet, you can take as much as you want. Por Dios!!! Hard to believe that it's been a few years since I revisited Tacos Alex. I LOVED it back then and, ya know what? Lemme tell you something...I LOVE Tacos Alex even MORE now!!! They still get FIVE well deserved Yelp stars in my book!!! So they did a remodel. The new (to me) interior is brighter, cleaner, more comfortable, and more organized. They've moved the salsa bar to the front right corner instead of in the middle of the room. New tiles, paint, and furnishings make this place look A+! As for the menu, they've added burritos (killer deal for $4.99) and quesadillas, along with their tortas. So, when I was finally in the area, I walked in and was pleasantly surpassed by Taco Alex's new digs. BRAVO! I was warmly greeted by the super nice woman working at the counter. This time I ordered a cabeza burrito, 2 lengua tacos grandes, and 2 tripa tacos grandes. "Ay, lo siento. No tengo tripa" the counter person said. "Umm, tienes chicharrones?" I asked, holding my breath...I mean, they never had chicharrones before whenever I visited. "Si, tenemos!" And, with that, I spy'd in my eye behind the counter, in their nice new kitchen, a tray of yummy sautéed fried pork skin...Oh, Lawd have mercy!!! "Y dos chicharrones tacos grades, por favor!" What I loved about this visit was that the super duper sweet woman working at the counter repeated my order back to me, both when I ordered and also when I received it! BRILLIANT!!! Their cabeza was as good as ever! Their lengua was so tender and flavorful. And, their chicharrones tacos, OMG, so moist and yummy!!! And, for the very first time, I tried me some Aqua Fescas at Taco Alex. There's a common theme running through the reviews here at this shop and that theme is "THIS PLACE HAS THE BEST TACOS I'VE EVER HAD!" I'm not gonna lie, that may be the god-damned truth. Tacos Alex is a joint on a dusty street just off of San Marcos Blvd. Tiny and unassuming, you walk into non-matching tables, rickety chairs, and a sticky counter with jugs of Horchata and Jamaica waiting to be stirred and ladled to order. You give your order, hope they haven't run out of anything (they didn't have flour tortillas for quesadillas or large corn tortillas for 'grande' sized tacos when I went), and gather your salsa and wait. And, oh my, is that wait worth it. They gently fry the tortillas, making the taco shells slightly crispy, while still retaining their foldable softness, and having a freshness to the taste that adds a hint of salt to your meat and a bit of sweetness on the backend. The meat is flavorful across the board, well seasoned, and fatty / well-grilled / sweetened where it needs to be. They add a scoop of pintos in there for delicious filler and sprinkle onion with cilantro across to top it all off perfectly. We had Carne Asada, Cabesa, Carnitas, Tripas, Al Pastor, and PolloAsada. There was not one disappointment on our plates. Each new bite brought wide eyes and nods of impressed appreciation from all around. I just wish I could have gone back and grabbed a full burrito. Maybe next time I'll just bite the bullet and get a full tray of meat to eat on the drive home. Oh, and the Horchata, while not being the best I've tasted, definitely ranks up on my top three list of best in-house made horchatas I've ever had the luck to drink. Nice and sweet, a strong undertone of cinnamon, no syrupy aftertaste, very clean and refreshing ... absolutely delicious. This place definitely ranks up there for me and I will certainly make a point to come back here when in San Marcos again. This place was cool for cheap and fast tacos. The pastor was more flavorful than the asada meat. The cucumbers were a perfect compliment for the tacos and the salsas were ok. Not the best, but I'd go again if I was hungry and needed a cheap and fast option. The horchata was warm (granted it was a hot day) and a little too sweet for my preference, but my boyfriend thought it was a 7.5/10. Talk about a hidden gem! You would never guess from the outside the crazy deliciousness that is going on inside. I am sure that this place gets looked over many of times for the ever so popular place next door. BUT if you want to try some bomb tacos, not your everyday taco shop tacos, but some serious authentic juicy meat filled tacos, you have got to try this place. The price is on point, the flavor is amazing. I tried the adobada, al pastor, carne asada and the carnitas. The almpastor was the best, but honestly all of them were 5 star tacos. They have little size and big, I think the little was 1.85! It comes with meat, beans, onions and cilantro. They also throw some grilled onions on there that just add to the flavor. Their salsa bar is also delicious, they have green sauce that will keep you going back for more. It is so bad, I want to give it a zero but that's not possible, so I give it a one. First of all I can't even review the food because after 25 minutes I never got anything. I was sitting outside at the very FILTHY table by the OPEN window where the flashy cashier dripped in fake Versace stands. I heard her call out numbers 38,39, 40, 41, 43, 46, 44, and never 45 which was my number. I went up and asked about my order, she looked around for a bit and the tacos had been sitting there on the counter for idk how long. So I decided I no longer wanted soggy tacos and would like a refund. The very rude cashier was visibly annoyed and responded "I've been calling out your number you just didn't hear" NO. I was by the window listening for my number the entire time. The entire place looks filthy, it smells bad, and the service is horrible. I'm a guy that loves me some tacos. A ran across this little shop while driving around San marcos. Tiny parking lot but was able to find a space. Inside was small but had 4 or 5 tables with a little outdoor seating area as well. The place was clean and the staff was friendly. I ordered a cabeza, tripa, and buche taco. When I got my order I was surprised that the tacos had beans in them. They were super delicious, trips were nice and crunchy. Their sauces were super mild. The only thing that I found hot was the cucumbers. Omg. No idea what was on then but I had to hold back my tears. 10/10 read more

Ok, this place has usually been a staple but every time we go now, it takes forever to get our food and sometimes it can definitely be a miss. The place is super tiny and very hot, not very clean. They have 1 cook and 1 cashier and for some reason now, all the time they don't even have all the things on their menu. They just write a list of things you can order and tape it in front of where you order. The salsas are good and the cucumbers but I worry about how long everything has actually been made for because I don't think they make anything fresh like they'll just reuse what's not used. The limes seem to not be washed before they cut them and you only get 1 small bag. They're very stingy with what they've got and it's so sad because this place could seriously flourish with more workers who are actually happy to serve you and a different location because there are only like 4 parking spots. KA FREAKING BOOM I'm an east coast guy but have been traveling to SCAL for at least 20 or so years. I'm the first one to admit that we do not know jack squat about tacos. During that time, I've been humble and learned the ways of the taco. This place kills it. First, their Al Pastor is hands down delish. No, I mean like unbelievably give me 100 of these things good. We got the chicos but next time going to go grande for the flour tortillas. The cukes and hot sauce were off the hook. Don't forget to ask for your bag. As for that creamy green sauce... Best "Street Tacos" hands down in NC.I can say that I have had all there variety of tacos here and was not dissapointed. My favorites however are the Asada and Cabeza Tacos. all tacos come with beans and that is the best compliment to the taco. Salsa bar is also on point with the Mexican style Pepino's preparados super good. The Staff is super friendly as well. Only thing to be concerned about is parking because its limited but you can park n the street behind the restaurant so don't give up in parking lot of 4 spaces is full. Provecho! read more
