We love visiting taishan cuisine in Chinatown, so we were excited to find one near our house on Ocean Ave. food was mostly delicious, except the claypot rice didn't have enough meat nor flavor until I asked for sauce (I can't tell if he just forgot to bring it?). The A-choy portion was big compared to a lot of other Chinese restaurants and the pepperiness of the tripe soup really hit. Service was good despite it being one waiter serving the whole restaurant. Not exactly the cleanest place, but I'm not really looking for ambiance when coming to a Chinese restaurant. We'd come back when the Taishan food cravings hit, but be sure to order the eel claypot early because they run out, even on a random Tuesday night. This is a relatively new spot on Ocean and I've been meaning to check it out for a bit. It was a cold night and this seemed like a great time to check it out. Its simply decorated but I wasn't there for that, I was there for Taishan cuisine! I ordered the veggie eggrolls along with the Eel and Chinese Sausage clay pot. I haven't eaten claypot in forever and this did not disappoint! Along with the named ingredients were ginger slices and porkbelly, a pretty great combo. The clay pot rice here is so delicious! For the 2 of us, we ordered a kohlrabi clay pot rice and some sautéed green beans. Both were so delicious. Excited this new spot opened recently, extending from their original location in Chinatown. Place inside is larger than expected, plenty of tables. Went around 5:45pm on a Sunday and the place was fairly empty aside from another couple dining in. Very friendly service. We ordered: - Eel clay pot rice (4.5/5): Been wanted to try it here and it did not disappoint, fresh tasting pieces, generous portion, rice had the nice crunch at the bottom. Only caveat is some of the eel pieces had slight bone pieces so be careful feeding to kids. Slightly on saltier side. - Vegetable stir fry with string beans, broccoli, mushroom, carrots (4/5): Large portion but on the oilier side - Roasted chicken whole (4/5): They didn't have half portion option today so we went with the whole bird, and whole bird we got including the head and butt. Some pieces, including wings, were too dry and inedible, but the middle pieces were tasty and moist. On the saltier side so we drank a lot of water and tea. Overall it took a while to get our food but when it came they were piping hot. The dishes were saltier and oilier than what we prefer, but good to try. Was in the area and were looking for some vegan options, the staff is super sweet, friendly and accommodated us with two vegan dishes - eggplant in a claypot and mushrooms w green beans and broccoli. The mushroom dish was good but not too flavorful but the eggplant was just a mush that had not much flavor and it was swimming in oil. The dish was not inedible in my option, my friend ate some of it but I did not, I told the girl that assisted us and she told us to make sure we tell them next time to cook with less oil but I do not think I have not mention for my dish to not be doused in oil. It was very oily and I had to have lots of tea, the tea is complimentary so that was nice. My brother introduced me to Taishan in Ingleside as an alternative to visiting their location downtown. The food is delicious. We enjoyed the cold chicken which is blanched. It comes with a plain soy based dipping sauce but we like eating the chicken by itself as it's got great flavor. The choy sum with garlic is another simple but delicious dish. We're usually able also tried the braised beef over rice and pork chop with onion over rice. I liked the beef a bit more. We're usually able to find street parking on Ocean Ave. We will definitely be back:) read more

The restaurant is clean and welcoming. The service is efficient and friendly. We love the Claypot rice dishes. The chicken and spareribs are seasoned and cooked perfectly. When we added the soy sauce to rice, it still sizzled. We love eating the crunchy perfectly brown rice at the bottom of the claypot. After we finished the rice, we added tea to the pot to get all the crispy rice out of the pot. Since they have a new dish of roast duck, they even gave samples to us. It was delicious too. Their 2/3 item to-go boxes end at 5pm. I was eating next door at the ramen restaurant and noticed a new restaurant opened. They are a familiar chain, Taishan Cuisine! The food at their Broadway location is awesome. This location was empty at 8:15pm on a Wednesday. I got their wonton noodles $9.50 to go as a way of welcoming them to the neighborhood. I usually don't write these type of negative reviews(especially for "local" chinese/asian owned businesses) but this was beyond disrespectful. Was greatly disappointed by not only the customer service but also by the respect the employees and business owner had towards their customers. Disclaimer, our whole party spoke fluent Cantonese and Mandarin, there was no language barrier. The TL:DR, we had to wait 1 hour for our dishes to arrive, just for the employees to not even apologize once, and instead, business owners and employees were laughing to themselves while us and another table had to wait to get our food due to the negligence of the employees. Not to mention, the employees even gave us reheated food that was given and eaten from another table. Came by on a weekday night, ordered, and were told that claypot rice dishes usually take 20 minutes, and we knew that was the normal time. About 30 minutes pass by, a claypot rice dish arrives at another table that was late. That table digs into the food and realizes it was the wrong order, it was originally supposed to be for my table. The employees come to reconfirm orders for both tables, mind you, THERE ARE ONLY TWO TABLES IN THE RESTAURANT. After reconfirming orders, we asked if we could change dishes, and they wouldn't let us. They said that the food was "almost ready". The claypot rice came out lukewarm and wasn't even sizzling hot after waiting "45 minutes" but the time difference between the food coming incorrectly for the other table and it reaching our table was only 10 minutes. About 1 full hour passes and our second claypot rice comes out, correct this time, and it is sizzling hot. That's how we realized, they just reused and then reheated the rice that the previous table dug and ate out of and gave it to us. We even confronted them and they kept saying that it was a new dish, but how did a "new" dish finish in 10 minutes, after it was made incorrectly when it usually takes 20. Luckily the food tastes ALRIGHT, it's not as good as the Chinatown one, and the service is horrendous. No respect, no communication, only selfish business owners and employees who kept to themselves the whole time. The ONLY OTHER table had 4 missing items, and 2 incorrect orders. And my table had to wait an hour for our food to come out. Two tables, and they were able to disrespect ours and the only other customers in the building. Would not recommend coming, in the chance that an employee makes a mistake and then you get disrespected. Maybe I came in at a bad time, but the lack of communication, respect, and not even apologizing once is insane. No language barrier, no culture shock, this was pure disrespect by the business. read more

We came at noon and the place was empty. However, we got the full attention of our friendly waitress who chatted with us and made a few recommendations. Each of us ordered a dish each. Fu Yu vegetables, beef & rice hot pot and beef ho fun. Dishes were under $20 and pretty substantial. Around 12.30, people were slowly trickling in. I'm glad there's a place dedicated to Taishan cuisine opening on Ocean, but I was quite disappointed. As someone from the area, the food was a far-cry from Taishan flavors. Not saying it's bad per se, but it's not a place I would go a second time. Their signature chicken was a bit bland for the style, and the quality of their chicken was not great. They gave a lot of bone-only pieces for their sweet and sour chicken, which was....interesting? Sat in on a busy Monday morning. A lot of grandpa and grandmas looking forward to try this place out. I was seated by a gentleman, I was in a hurry and I ordered the spare rib clay pot rice. The clay pot rice was not too oily, rice was crunchy, spare ribs were a bit fatty, the soy sauce came in a bowl. I wished they gave me more of that sauce. I eat a lot of clay pot rice with my mom so I'm glad that there's one in the Ingleside area and plus their rice is not great which is a plus. I forgot to order my free soy drink and I think the lady in charge said I didn't order initially so no drink. Then later the gentleman came and I asked for clarification and without explanation, he went to get me a freee cup of soy milk. Thanks to the gentleman, he's been busting his chops to take orders and do everything else while the bossy lady is pissed at everyone, I'm still giving them a 5 star. I'm not familiar with Taishan Cuisine but, A quick google search and it seems like they're known for Yellow Eel and rice - so i decided to order just that. Took a god 20-30 min wait for my claypot to be cooked. The dish was pretty substantial and they were not shy with the rice. My order was the Eel Claypot Crispy Rise. Eel - Not really a fan to begin with but wanted to give it a try. It tasted clean and not fishy at all Crispy Rice - slightly undercooked and not crispy at all. 3/5 I wouldn't order it again. The string bean was good too. But the chicken didn't have much flavor and a little dry. Literally minutes from my home. And my favorite restaurant to enjoy traditional Taishanese food from Guangdong Province 廣東省. Indeed a game changer. We opted for the hollowing: Eel and Preserved Meat Claypot Rice 黃鱔臘咪煲仔飯. Fresh eels. Super fragrant meats. Perfectly booked crunch scorched rice at the bottom of pot. The ultimate test of a great spot for Taishan food. Taishan Roast Chicken 台山燒雞 Incredibly tasty. Ginger licking hood. Fish Maw and Chicken Soup 蟹肉魚肚羹. Excellent. Hits the spot.
