It is at the end of the shopping area on the main drag of N. Talbot Street but should not be overlooked! My husband and I visited several years ago and I am now the proud owner of a beautiful Seacret Oyster can that transports me back in time to when oyster harvesting and packing was such a big business in Maryland that many cities were built upon the shucked shells! On my most recent visit I was checking out the selection of oyster plates and some cool croquet clubs and balls. The store is packed so there is a lot to take in. The owner is always friendly and conversational but not overbearing. She takes great pride in what she has in store and is glad to share her knowledge about it.

The price was ridiculous to begin with, but she really wanted it for our pool house and it was a fabulous find. The owner said they would deliver it and such, so we were super pleased with them. However, my mother returned to the store about a month later--so this past week--to do some more shopping with our family friends. A woman, who I assume is the owner, noticed our family friend showing the sign to her daughter. The owner walked over to them and started discussing who purchased it--so, my mother. The woman apparently was calling my mother a "crazy" woman, she had told her partner (?unsure of the relationship between the two) to throw out a ridiculous price with the hopes of deterring my mother from purchasing the item. The reason for it being because they didn't want to sell it yet. Low and behold, my mother is standing right there, listening to this woman bad-mouth her, call her names, and other horrific items. I am pleased to say my mother defended herself and her purchase, which I'm sure gave her some sense of victory. At the end of the day. This is a great store. The management, however, could care less about their customers--to the point that they go out of their way to speak unbelievably poorly about them. Thankfully, my mother was standing right there. Suggestions? First of all, tell someone something isn't for sale if you do not want to sell it. It is a geographic area that houses many wealth individuals that will pay those prices for items they truly want. Secondly, the customer should be your main priority. If you are upset because a customer bought something from your store that YOU GAVE THEM A QUOTE ON, then there is a real issue that needs to be addressed--personally and for the store. If you are going out of your way to speak poorly of a loyal customer, then that is a sure fire way to receive reviews such as mine. Like I said, great store, plenty of great pieces. However, that aspect is completely minimized if management is horrific. Do better. Me and my family are appalled.

Some items were antiques and other were inspired from the past. I'm also perpetually on the hunt for items related to Chesapeake Bay heritage and there was plenty of that at Sea Captain's Cottage. Not only did we find pieces that were perfect that didn't break our bank, they offer a full restoration service before the pieces are picked up so the drawers etc all work well. No other antique dealer we've met has offered this at no charge. We drove over an hour to take a look at the pieces we picked online, and met the entire family, all of whom were polite and knowledgeable. They showed us our pieces directly in their warehouse, and even assembled one that had recently arrived from Belgium so we could see what it looked like. Every penny was well spent here and we will certainly be returning for more additions to our furniture collection.

It turns out that the good stuff is hidden in the store. Case after case of antique diamond and gemstone jewelry! We may need to visit Guilford and Co. every time I'm in town! I was surprised at how large this store is. The pieces are displayed well, grouped by era as well as stone type, as far as I could tell. I also couldn't believe how many Edwardian and Art Deco pieces they had on site. I mostly browsed the gemstone rings, but I'd imagine that this would also be a great place to purchase a piece with dreamy old cut diamonds! They also have a GIA GG on-site who is available to answer more detailed questions. Some standouts -- -a warm L/M round cut diamond in a glowing emerald halo with absolutely GORGEOUS tiny milgrain detail on the bezel -an intricate and HUGE Art Deco diamond brooch/pendant that I didn't dare try on -a high carat yellow gold ring set w/ a rich, dark amethyst cab -a fireball of an orange sapphire set in a halo ring -a blue moonstone ring set in an angular diamond and filigree halo -several Edwardian diamond rings in the central case, including what looked like a three-stone of old (mine?) cut diamonds in a filigree setting -and.... Well, I could go on and on, but I don't imagine anyone is actually still reading this. :) I should also mention that it is a very comfortable, low pressure environment to browse in. The SA was more than happy to dart from case to case, and even suggested different items for me to try on. She was friendly, informed, and very easy to get along with -- No fake nicety or condescension here. I actually told her directly that I'd used up all my "spending points" on jewelry this month, but she just kindly asked what I'd used them on and then continued letting me try on the pretties. Once the items were in his possession, he became vague and cagey about what items had actually sold. When pressed, he did state that some books had sold, but that he could not send a commission check immediately because he had bills to pay, despite agreeing that he owed us the funds. We finally received a small check, but never received any type of account detailing what was sold. After many months, we asked for a status update of the remaining items and all we received was a text message stating that they had been donated as they did not sell. Please beware when dealing with this individual.
