Talent Prep Astoria has been a blessing for our family. We have two kids currently enrolled in the purple (pre-k) and grey (nursery) class. We were lucky because we got them in a few months after they opened. Now it's been over a year and the pre-k class has filled up and is wait-list only. They have been attending for almost a year and we look forward to them continuing to attend more years to come. I almost wish they had a Talent Prep elementary school.
Pros:
1) Every week there is a new theme in class
2) There is a weekly report of class that is emailed where you get a summary of activities they did in class over the week.
3) The children learn to be kind and respect each other. Even when the kids misbehave, the teachers are very patient.
4) The children are encouraged and taught to be independent (putting on their own jackets, cleaning up toys)
5) There are long naps from 1-3pm (sleeping is very important for brain development)
6) We can celebrate their birthdays by bringing in cake and goodies for the class.
7) They help with potty training. When my oldest first started attending and he was 3, he was potty trained within one month. Which was awesome.
8) There are lessons in chinese, spanish. My kids have come home saying ni hao ma and hola, que pasa? (hello how are you in both languages)
9) There is gifted and talent prep
10) They are very transparent when there are surprise visits from the city inspection office. If you see violations for the school, please note that inspectors always look for things to write up. Talent prep has been very transparent about this and work to address any violations (minor usually) as soon as possible. They keep us posted whenever there is a surprise visit via email.
11) They allow therapists if your child needs additional assistance to come and help. My kids have a therapist in speech and general ed. They will also recommend evaluation if your child needs it (speech or physical). Our therapists also have good things to say about the school. If there were any issues, they would definitely let us know.
12) They have classes in music and dancing.
13) They do yoga which helps the kids focus and stretch. I think its cool that they get this opportunity because even I don't get to do yoga.
14) For Chinese new years, the children get special performance of a chinese dance.
15) A lot of good experiences for the kids (trick or treating together, growing butterflies and releasing the butterflies).
16) A few times a year they will invite families in to partake in potluck fellowship activities like thanksgiving, and Christmas.
17) On mother's day they invited all the moms in for tea time, which was so cute and good to get to know other parents.
18) In the summer, there are field trips that the kids can attend. Last year, my son got to go to a farm and see different types of animals (goats, pigs etc)
19) They provide healthy breakfast, lunch and snack options. If your child takes a special snack, they are willing to accommodate this.
20) They are very accommodating to working parents schedule. Even when it snowed and public schools closed, they stayed open and the kids were able to come had hot chocolate and hang out with their friends.
21) Parents were encouraged to come in and read a story or do special crafts with the children.
22) Teachers are all awesome. Even when one teacher decided to pursue another career path and shared that she was leaving, I was so sad that I cried, that's how much we really cared and liked her. Eventually she is coming back after the summer so that shows how special Talent prep is
23) My kids love their teachers and friends. Every morning they go into school happy. My youngest will run into school and forget about me. He cried a bit for the first week but adjusted very well after that. They even allowed his older brother to come and comfort him.
24) The children have enriching experiences and do all sorts of crafts, in addition to practicing writing, math etc.
25) The whole environment at Talent Prep Astoria is very nurturing, accommodating and supportive. If you call ahead to let them know you are picking them up, they will have the kids ready to go.
Cons:
1) There isn't a large playground on the premises but the teachers keep the kids busy. They have activities on the roof (slide, balls, bicycles, parachute). They also walk the kids to Hoyt playground and around the block if the weather permits.
2) I wish I had more pictures of my kids, maybe even a daily report. After being at work all day, I love reading any report I get about their day. The weekly report helps out a lot and I look forward to reading it every week.
3) We live in Woodside so we drive to Astoria every morning. I wish there was a Talent Prep Woodside! It is worth it to drive 10-20mins and they are close to the subway which is super convenient.
There are so many reasons why I love Talent prep Astoria don't have enough space. To be continued! read more
