We were visiting overnight and just wanted a comfy place to stay - the rooms looked really nice on the website, so we booked here for the bargain price of £85 overnight for their most flash room (executive with bath). After a bit of a challenge finding where to park the car (the car park is diagonally opposite the hotel on the other corner of the street), we checked in which was easy and hassle free. We booked a table for dinner as we didn't really know of other options in Barrow and went to check out our room. There's a very slow elevator, or you can take the stairs. The hotel is spread over three floors and while you might initially think it seems a little cosy and close to the road, I didn't have any trouble sleeping and found it pretty quiet actually. Our room was pretty large, with an entrance foyer with open wardrobe, large bathroom with freestanding bath and a large bedroom area with couches. Everything was clean, fresh and well-presented and the bed was really comfy (although the pillows were a little hard). I wasn't expecting much for dinner, I'll be honest. But we were really impressed with the food - it was better than standard pub grub. We ate in the dining room, I believe you can also eat in the vaults downstairs while watching the football if you're so inclined. We shared smoked salmon with blue cheese fritters for a starter. This was a little weird, I'll be honest. I actually don't know what the fritters were made of, it was a bit like a blue cheese pancake. The salmon was delicious. Even though I found it weird, I still loved it so that's a bonus I guess! For main I had the 8oz prime sirloin steak, served with onion rings, chunky chips and a grilled tomato and mushroom, and I added mushroom sauce to it. This steak was really good, perfectly cooked and really well seasoned. I couldn't fault it. I struggled to finish all of this as there was a generous portion of the sides but I really enjoyed it all. We decided not to have dessert as I was well and truly stuffed. Service throughout the meal was good and while we were in a separate room tucked away from the bar, there was always someone on hand for more drinks if needed. Breakfast the next morning was pretty standard and they dealt with my request to change a few things really well, giving me extra hash browns instead of beans and black pudding. Overall, this place was a really comfortable and welcoming place to stay. The staff didn't seem to mind when we sat in the bar for an hour & half after check out, waiting for our friends to arrive from Glasgow so we could head to the stadium for roller derby! If you're heading to Barrow and need somewhere to stay, I'd highly recommend it here.

Food is okay, nothing special but good value with the 2 for 1 deals and the Curry Nights they do. It's a few minutes walk from the area where most of the other pubs and clubs are, but that's not usually a problem unless it's raining! As with all Wetherspoons there's no music so you'll have to make your own entertainment - maybe a disadvantage for some, but it's also a bonus if you just want to go somewhere quiet for a drink and a chat. There are cheap house doubles and good drinks promotions, making it a good place to start your night off. The staff here are always very strict with ID (and rightly so!), so take your passport/driving licence if you look a bit young as they won't serve you otherwise! Well recommended.

It does good home-cooked hearty food at its best! The pub itself had a refurbishment a year or so ago and is very welcoming and cosy as you walk in. They definitely seem to concentrate more on the food part than the 'pub' part, with the result that it's a lovely family place to go. There are plenty of tables, and they can put them together to accommodate larger groups - the most we have had so far is 14, which the staff accommodated with no problems. I can't praise the staff enough; whenever we've gone they have always been so friendly and helpful, getting your food out quickly and having time for a quick chat too! The menu itself includes everything from steaks to lasagne and roast dinners - with a good selection of specials - while their puddings are HUGE! I'm not too sure on the prices, since every time I've gone so far, someone else has paid (lucky me!) but any price would be worth it for such a fab evening out. They have their own car park which is only small, but we usually manage to get parked there. Booking is advisable, as they do get booked up very quickly! We've only ever gone in the evening, but I believe they also do food throughout the day. I would wholeheartedly recommend The Ship!

Drinks are not discounted as in some pubs, but its more a place to eat rather than drink. The pub has a few outdoor tables, which are always full on nice days with people making the most of the view across the channel. The car park is rather small for the size of the pub, made worse by new owners blocking of the exit and making the entrance and exit the same. Absolutely recommended.

We've always found the staff to be very friendly; they always have a chat and a laugh with us, even though it must be boiling for them standing over the hot plates all day, they never complain. My only complaint is that the car park is absolutely tiny and it's really hard to park in (or maybe thats just me!) - but you can usually park on the road outside, and apart from that it's a great meal out - really good value for all the family.
