Tam O'Shanter is an all-time great and I truly love the cozy, historic atmosphere. Those without food restrictions will love the traditional menu but as a vegan I love to see more options. There's tons of ways to make veganized versions of traditional items and even if there's no meat substitute, adding vegan butter/cheese would open up a lot of options for guests. But! Still grateful there's at least one option for me at a place that is of course more centered on meat and potatoes. The drinks are amazing, and Christmas time here is a must. read more

A bit pricey for what it is. The vibes feel like a cozy pub, but the prices, in particular the prime rib prices, feel like an upscale steak house. Even the smaller, California Cut is priced in the $50's for an entree - that's a little crazy in my opinion! I split a California Cut with my fiancé and we ordered it medium rare. When it came, it looked more rare to us, but we decided to just try it. My fiancé was having a hard time cutting it because it was pretty rare. We sent it back to the kitchen, and I'm thankful that they were more than willing to cook it longer. It was much better when it came back. Pretty cozy decor inside with fun lore of the tables that Walt Disney would sit at depending on the occassion of dining. Recent visit on 9/16 was mostly enjoyable. Arrived just before 1pm for lunch with a friend after some appointments in the area. Was seated in the dining room promptly, orders taken and food brought out in timely manner. Attached is my receipt for my order. My friend's order is separate as he has his own Lawry's VIP account. FOOD: My order was brisket sandwich and poutine. Poutine was delicious and would order again, except would ask for the brown gravy on the side since I enjoy dipping my fries into the gravy. The brisket was so-so as it lacked flavor and texture. The brisket was not clear noticeable slices of brisket as I was accustomed to and just mushed between the brioche bun. Would not order this again. My friend had the fish and chips, something he has had here before. SERVICE: I would give dining service 5 stars, but for customer service I would only give 3 stars. Food service was excellent for taking our orders, bringing our food out, refilling our water and coffees. However, the customer service for anything else was POOR. The server did not understand the Lawry's VIP Rewards Program enough and therefore my friend's VIP birthday reward of 300 points did not redeem from his visit. We tried to tell the server, but he insisted it would activate. The server said the new system would not allow him to redeem partial VIP Reward $ on the bill and allow my friend to pay the remaining balance on his credit card as we have both done in the past. While we were in the car before we left, I checked my friend's VIP Rewards account and the 300 points did NOT activate. Upon returning inside and telling the hostess at the front desk, she immediately tried to refer us to the VIP customer service telephone number and email, passing off any responsibility for the restaurant's handling of the VIP program. I informed her that the employee said the 300 points reward would activate, but didn't. She said the new system needs 24 hours for it to reflect. Well guess what, it has been more than 24 hours and it has not activated to added the points to his account balance. Now we are left with contacting or returning to the restaurant to speak with a manager to try to have them fix this, calling the VIP customer service or emailing them. As a Lawry's VIP customer for probably 30+ years going to many of the Lawry's restaurants and Tam O'Shanter, the customers should NOT know the ins and outs of their VIP Program and how it works better than their employees. The server and the hostess were too quick to blame the new system and hand off their customers to contact the VIP telephone number and email. I consider that behavior POOR customer service and that is the reason for only 3 stars. read more

We were intrigued and curious about this place since we had a great experience at Lawry's in Beverly Hills. But we didn't like it. We found street parking on the main road. Otherwise, it's about $10 (give or take) for valet parking. The outside aesthetics were definitely the high point. The cobblestone trail, the patio, and the phone booth drew us in. The inside had a dim, tavern feel. We were told to sit anywhere. We did, and a waiter spotted us and took our orders. Drinks were tasted OK but didn't give me a buzz or anything. I thought about getting something other than prime rib but figured I should get one since I was at a prime rib place. I probably should have gotten the fish and chips (from the special menu) or something because my medium-rare Tam O'Shanter (10oz) cut was tasteless and difficult to saw through. The medium California (6oz) cut was easier to cut through. Unlike Lawry's Beverly Hill, where we got food freshly cut and plated at the table with spinning salad (with the understanding that these are all Lawry's-specific gimmicks that I shouldn't expect elsewhere), we got flavorless food for essentially the same price. We came to the Tam O'Shanter recently to try the Lawry's experience without having to drive all the way down to Beverly Hills and get all dressed up for the experience and we left with some thoughts about the Tam O'Shanter. First off, the location was definitely aesthetically pleasing. It felt like a storybook cottage in the Scottish Highlands which upon entering felt like a Scottish pub that serves heaping portions of shepherd's pie and large pints of beer. If you're lucky enough and book early enough out you can also book Walt Disney's booth and have the Walt Disney experience, which we were told includes some more additions that normal reservations do not get. Secondly, the service at the Tam O'Shanter good albeit performative. it felt like we caught our server on a bad day, but he was doing his best to make it a great experience for us...so I give him a pass on this. His suggestions were right on, with the exception for the dessert that we'll touch on later. We ordered the Lawry's experience which if you don't know is Prime Rib with the Lawry's cut. Lawry's owns the Tam O'Shanter so you're essentially getting the same cut of beef here as you would at Lawry's prime with the only difference being it not carved tableside. That wasn't a problem for us. We ordered an appetizer which included the bread with different butters and I have to say that was simply divine. Unfortunately, the prime rib was a little disappointing. I guess our expectations were higher than expected but it felt like the prime rib came but was missing the jus, and also accompaniments which made it seem and feel weird asking for it. The meat was cooked right on temperature and the flavors were good but at least make the gesture to offer options for the customer. Then came the dessert. The ice cream sundae was made out to be something unique that you don't get anywhere else. Well, it felt just like any ice cream sundae so we weren't really sure why our waiter made it seem like it would be a special experience. Overall, I think approach the Tam O'Shanter with cautious optimism and you'll leave happy. It's a bar and a restaurant dressed up to be a fairytale, but strip away all that and it's a bar that serves a good cut of prime rib with valet parking or street parking and probably more expensive than it should be. We came for the Dine LA menu, and the prime rib was amazing-super tender and full of flavor. Our waiter even let us check out and sit at the famous Walt Disney table, which was such a cool touch! It's been over ten years since I've reviewed this restaurant and a lot has changed. First, there is an outside patio for dining and drinks which would be amazing for fall dining. Second, the Walt Disney table is a special booking request when available through Opentable. Lastly, they don't serve Squaw Bread any more, just white bread. I've been going here my whole life. The prime rib, whether entree or sandwich, is the main draw. This place is over a hundred years old and was the unofficial original Disney commissary. Ask to see the mural by the nine old men or sit at Walt's table. So much gorgeous history from a Scottish inn they brought over and reassembled. The Tam O'Shanter is a rip-off. I ordered from Uber Eats and online customers are an afterthought. The restaurant purposely leaves out side dishes off the "turkey platter," for example. So you end up ordering side dishes for the turkey platter. Upon arrival, my dish included two side dishes in addition to the side dishes I ordered. Nearly $100 later, the sides were mediocre and the turkey was drier than the driest lake in Death Valley. Shame on Tam O'Shanter: I even called the restaurant and spoke to someone before I ordered. Either they lied or just don't have their stuff together. Meanwhile, I lost a lot of money plus a great driver tip. Get it together TOS!! I have dined at this historic and iconic restaurant a number of times, invariably during DineLA weeks. When booking another DineLA res, I noticed the Tam now offers a "Walt's Table 31" lunch or dinner experience. Walt Disney's favourite table used to be by request, but the Tam now wisely monetizes the table by making it a 2-hour pre-fixe lunch or dinner experience for up to 4 people. The lunch price was just $4 more than DineLA, so I booked it. Tam O'Shanter, named after a Scottish poem, opened in 1922. It was designed by Harry Oliver, a Hollywood art and set director who also designed the Witch's House (Spadena House) in Beverly Hills. Both are done in whimsical Storybook architecture style. Levels were not used in construction, hence the lopsided/sloping appearance of some features. The Tam became the de facto Disney Studio commissary when Walt Disney and his Imagineers would often come here to eat when the Disney Studio was still nearby in Silver Lake on Hyperion (1926-1940). His regular table is a 4-top in the main dining room, next to a fireplace. The Tam has several dining rooms, plus a bar/lounge. There is a hidden speakeasy on the premises as well. The Tam was the inspiration for the design of the Snow White ride at Disneyland. It's now part of the Lawry's family of restaurants. The Walt's Table 31 experience consists of 4 courses for both lunch and dinner. You reserve and prepay on Open Table with no refunds or cancellations. We originally booked and prepaid for 2 people, but were able to add 2 more and paid onsite for these additional folks. There seem to be 2 lunch and 3 dinner spots available each day in 2-hour increments. Dinner is $20 more but portions are larger. There's a "Walt's Welcome Cocktail" available; any beverage alcoholic or not is not included. Backstories by the server and a few souvenirs (your menu, a pin, a print) are included. Plus you get a punch card for return visits; apparently the souvenirs progress the more times you come. The menu: 1) everyone gets deviled eggs, bacon-wrapped dates (aka Devils on Horseback) and pickled veggies. The eggs had a nice kick. 2) 1st course options were a Wedge Salad or the Tam's Famous Chili. The salad was huge with an abundance of bleu cheese. The chili was very nice, topped with onions and cheese. 3) 2nd course options--there were 4, but we all got either The 31 Burger (Walt's Go-To Order) or the World Famous Prime Rib (California cut). Salmon or a vegetarian dish were the other options. The burger was served open-faced on toasted sourdough, topped with bacon, Scotch Rarebit (a cheese and ale sauce) and onions, served with chili fries. The prime rib, which I assume is identical to Lawry's, was the California cut, served with mashed potatoes and gravy, creamed spinach or corn and Yorkshire pudding. Larger cuts are available. You get horseradish cream or more potent plain horseradish. 4) Dessert--C.C. Brown's Hot Fudge Sundae or English Trifle. The sundae was quite large , topped with whipped cream and peanuts, with a small pitcher of chocolate sauce alongside. The trifle was also large--cake, whipped cream and strawberries layered in a glass. Overall a delish, classic meal served in a historic fun space. That punch card may get more use! read more

My husband and I tend to come here when we want prime rib in that moment so it's hard for us to get the seats we want considering we go out eat based on our cravings in the moment. Prime rib is good. I haven't been here since 2012 and first time to try the biannual DineLA lunch menu. They have a selection of fancy burgers so I chose the burger w bleu cheese and added crispy bacon, comes w fries. It was pretty decent despite the bleu cheese lightly added. See the picture, it's almost hard to spot but the flavor was decent. This by far was probably the worst experience I've ever had at this place. I am a VIP member and love to visit Tam O' Shanter at least twice a year. The cocktails were amazing and our Scotch Rarebit appetizer was also tasty but that's where the pleasantness of the experience ends. The French Onion Soup was bland and tasteless. It didn't even taste like it had been made in beef stock but just boiled onions. We had to send it back because it was awful. By far the worst part of the meal was the prime rib. I don't know what they served us but it was not prime rib. It had no marbling and large pieces of gristle in it. It was so tough I had to saw it with my knife for 30 seconds to cut off a piece. It felt like I was chewing beef gum when I was trying to eat a piece. The Yorkshire pudding is now a small, sad little flat puck of salty dough and not even light or airy. The potatoes and creamed spinach seemed to taste fine but since that was the only edible part of the meal it was ruined. I don't know what is going on but for $300 this meal was totally unacceptable! They need to fix this asap or I won't be surprised if 100 years was the finishing point for this restaurant. As an end note our waitress was excellent and she did try her best to fix everything that was wrong but you can't fix something if the replacement is going to be from the same stock. This is a cute little restaurant with an English pub theme. I ordered a prime rib sandwich that came with lots of small slices. Each one came with white inedible FAT. I had to take the sandwich apart and cut pieces of fat off of every piece of meat that was in my sandwich and that was really gross and unappetizing. See my photo. Larry's steakhouse fan here so when I heard of this place, I knew I had to go check it out. Honestly, my experience wasn't a very good one however I loved how cute the resteraunt was and the vibe it had. They offer valet parking service so that was a nice touch. Had reservations and got seated within 10 minutes of checking in. Service was slow all night from beginning to end. There was a point in the night where literally looking for our server so we could get our bill and pay. After 15 minutes of waiting they finally came by our table. I'm writing out of disappointment regarding my dining experience Sunday evening. I chose to spend my birthday dinner at Tam O'Shanter because of the many positive experiences I've had at your restaurant in the past, so unfortunately, I was especially disappointed by my experience this time. To start, the hosts would not seat our party of four in the main dining room because we were told it was completely occupied. However, both upon our arrival and when we left, there were several open tables in the main dining room. When it came time to order, our server accidentally misheard one of the orders, and her prime rib was brought out medium. However, the meat was so dark that it appeared to be cooked well beyond that. When the replacement was brought out, the side of gravy was forgotten. When the macaroni and cheese was brought out for the table to share, there was no serving utensil provided. Additionally, our water glasses were never checked on or refilled throughout the meal. Unfortunately, halfway through my meal, I also noticed a hair in my food (see attached photo, near the corn). At that point, after the other issues we had already experienced, I was extremely frustrated and did not feel comfortable bringing yet another issue to the attention of our server. To make matters worse, a significant reason we chose to celebrate my birthday at Tam O'Shanter was because of my birthday reward through the loyalty program. When I asked for it to be applied, our server told me that I did not have a birthday reward, despite my showing it to him on my phone. I was then told that it would be redeemable the next time I dined there. Opened in 1922, the Tam is reportedly Los Angeles's oldest restaurant still operated by the same family in its original location. It was also a favorite gathering place for Walt Disney and his artists, who frequented the restaurant from their nearby studio. Walt's preferred spot, Table 31, remains a destination for Disney devotees. The Tam even played a small part in Disney history. I always drove past this place and heard that they serve Lawrys prime rib. Decided to die in here on a random Saturday afternoon and order the prime rib for lunch. They don't have the spinning salad bowl. They just bring out the food to you so don't expect any presentation. The inside feels like an old pub. It is is very casual and nothing like a fancy prime rib restaurant. The reason why I like this place is because there is no lines or reservation needed. If you are craving the Lawrys prime rib, this is the place to get it. I had to knock down a star because the servers literally didn't seem like they wanted to work. This place has a lot of Scottish history dating as far back as 1922, when it was first established. Entering the restaurant feels like entering a different realm. The ambiance, the dated columns and flags, the paintings and the lighting feels you've been transported back to Scotland in the early 100s. The food was amazing. I went to the legendary Tam O'Shanter this weekend after it being open over 100 years in Atwater Village. I'm on top of new restaurants in the 'hood! :P I was surprised how cute this classy Scottish sit down pub was on the outside. Charming building and such a gorgeous outdoor space. Once the weather warms a bit, I'll be back to dine under their twinkling lights next to the outdoor classic UK Phone Booth. We sat for a couple of minutes after checking in with the host before being seated. However I didn't mind as I got to sit by their cozy fire. Fun LA History: Walt Disney used to come here with his Imagineers and there is a special booth marked by a plaque noting this. Our server was impeccable, as was all staff bringing out food & clearing tables. Our dinners were out within minutes, such a speedy kitchen! Valet was great too, $9. Goodness, the meats here are money. I tried my friend's Lawry's World Famous Prime Rib which they are known for and loved it. He got Tam O Shanter's Cut which they say is most popular and it was downright delicious. I went with the corned beef platter and absolutely loved that, as well. It was a huge portion that I used the leftovers to make a sandwich from! I had creamed corn with it and loved that, the mashed potatoes & gravy weren't quite as exciting. If it wasn't for the cocktails and the appetizer, it would be a one star review. We've been coming here for years. I think we've been here over 50 times in the last 20 years. Typically 2 to 3 times a year. The waitress is very sweet. She tried helping us through everything but at a certain point service can't beat bad food. We both ordered the Tam-O-Shanter cut. I really enjoy the bone and I asked if I can get it and she said she would try and my order did come with one so I was happy about that until I sawed into the meat. Typically, I could probably use a fork to cut the meat here it's tender, moist amazing flavor. This felt like a steak that was frozen for too long and just was not the normal prime cut for a restaurant. I've had better prime rib at Black Angus. And that's saying a lot. Overall, I know we're all going through stuff. I know the economies, tough food recalls and everything but this was the absolute worst prime rib I've ever had. I had one bite. Highly recommend making reservations as this place can get bu. I'm not a fan of prime rib so I appreciate that they had other options. I opted for the filet which is a go to for me if on the menu. My steak was perfectly cooked and I got a side of creamed corn which was also delicious. Our waitress, Veronica, was attentive and helpful. And the overall atmosphere is something of a fairytale. I am very disappointed to be writing this review because I've been a long-time customer at this location. We were seated next to an older man hosting Trivia Tuesday using an extremely loud portable speaker. I don't understand why proper sound equipment isn't used if this is a weekly event. It was incredibly disruptive, it's hard to enjoy a meal when a speaker is blasting right next to you. While we were waiting for our food, the man suddenly vomited behind us. It was shocking and completely unacceptable. I immediately informed our waitress, who told the manager. When the manager came out, he looked at us as if he were annoyed or offended and simply said, "Sorry...?" as though we were wrong for bringing it to his attention. What made the situation worse was how it was handled. He cleaned the area without gloves and without any visible sanitation measures, then walked straight back into the kitchen. I was absolutely disgusted. Given that there was also a hepatitis A case reported a few months ago, this raised even more serious concerns about cleanliness and food safety. I was already hesitant about coming back because of that incident, but my family was visiting from out of town and I wanted to bring them here. Had dinner here for an event and there were definitely some pros and cons! The pros. The restaurant was decorated so beautifully for the holiday season! It was so cozy and I absolutely adored the holiday vibes. It felt like a little cottage! We also had GREAT service for our event! Our server was quick, attentive, and so understanding of our chaotic Filipino family. Some of the food was good, but most were misses for me. I ended up really loving the bread and butter as well as one of the hors d'oeuvres (the bacon wrapped fig). I also LOVED the hot fudge sauce on our sundae and the gravy was pretty good. Everything else was kind of average! For dinner, we were given a salad, The Tam O'Shanter cut of prime rib medium rare (with yorkshire pudding, creamed spinach, gravy, and mashed potatoes), and an ice cream sundae. The salad was just fine! I REALLY wanted to love the prime rib more as this is what they are known for, but the prime rib fell flat for me. It felt pretty underseasoned. It tasted much better dipped in some horseradish sauce and/or in the gravy. It just didn't have much flavor. Which was the same problem with most of the sides. The yorkshire pudding and creamed spinach needed some more salt and/or seasonings. Mashed potatoes were good! The gravy was great, but I just needed waaaay more of it. The ice cream sundae was pretty basic (just plain ole vanilla ice cream) with pretty good chocolate/hot fudge sauce. Overall, I had a great time! I just felt like the food was lackluster. Went to the Tam O'Shanter to did at the famous table 31 where Walt Disney used to dine. I had never been to a Lawry's restaurant before, so we did not know what to expect - the service was amazing and the lunch was delicious. This is reminisce of an old inn, the server told us this was the basis of Snow White's house and definitely has the same feel. It is a bit dark inside so give your eyes some time to adjust. First course: deviled eggs and devils on horseback (bacon wrapped dates). Very good! The eggs had a nice little kick and delicious with the pickled veggies. The dates were soft and gave a little sweetness to the bacon. Second course: Walt's chili - we ALL got this, and even though we have had the one at the Carnation Cafe at Disneyland, for some reason this tasted 100x better. Full of gooey stringy cheddar cheese it was so good! For a chili it was not salty, tasted homemade from scratch and was light enough to still move on to the rest of our meal. No one got the salad Third course: I upgraded to the Tam O'Shanter portion- I am not a fan of prime rib but theirs might just change my mind. This probably was the best prime rib I've ever had, and I have no idea why. This paired beautifully with their creamed horseradish and their mashed potatoes with gravy. I am not a fan of creamed spinach (this is probably my first time having it), but really enjoyed the Yorkshire pudding (reminds me of a giant profiterole/cream puff). The other options was a salmon or a burger. Fourth course: we got the trifles and the chocolate fudge sundaes-- the trifles are a little sweet for me (I think it's the strawberry sauce on top) but the combination of the fresh cream and cake is so so tasty. My fave defaults to the sundae - I had never had Fosselman's ice cream before but now I want to go to Alhambra just to go have more! This was so good topped with fresh cream and chopped almonds and their piping hot fudge. We had such a great meal and our server imparted us the knowledge of the history of Walt Disney and the Tam O'Shanter - we will definitely be back. read more

I haven't eaten beef in over a month, and the carnivore in me was craving some red meat. Bestie and I wanted to eat a hearty and satisfying meal before heading out to Filipino Heritage Nightat Dodgers Stadium I'm only a short 10 minutes alway Atwater, so it was conveniently close I haven't been to Tam O Shanter in decades and it still has that nostalgic feel walking in. All the staff were friendly and helpful. Luckily, we were early enough that not too many people were there watching The World Cup. Service was a breeze! Prime rib was calling out my name. I decided upon the Tam O Shanter cut, medium rare. Even though it's Lawry's prime rib, they don't carve table side, but my prime rib was served to perfection! The meat was juicy, tender, and absolutely delicious Again, it wasn't Lawry's, so they don't serve their famous spinning salad but I love the creamed corn. I've never been too fond of Yorkshire pudding as I would much rather have a hearty roll. Unfortunately, because it wasn't dinner time, we couldn't order the chocolate soufflé and that's what bestie and I were looking forward to! Ha! Maybe next time! read more

My husband made reservations here abt 2 months out for Christmas Eve and then today it was dangerous flash floods+evacuation zones in LA. Couldn't reschedule or cancel our reservations without a $50 penalty and then we were seated outside in the cold and rain. Highly disappointing, esp on a holiday! So basically, it was like we were forced to drive in dangerous conditions and park 5 blocks away, which who cares we hike abt 5 miles daily. But the entire situation put us in emotional duress. We arrive at said restaurant and we walked the entire parameter of the restaurant: 40% of the seats indoors were unoccupied. The wait staff still proceeded to seat us out of doors in the pouring rain, on Christmas Eve! NOT COOL. Not to mention Atwater isn't a great area of LA. As an LA native, best to spend time in neighboring Los Feliz or Hollywood Hills, if ya know what's good for ya. The ambience was very Rusty's Pizza in Santa Barbara. I wish we were at the Chateau Marmont for its Christmas decor: more class and elegance. Not to mention accommodation and service. They never get it wrong. Will head over shortly, yeah! I recently visited Tam O'Shanter after hearing so many great things about its history and reputation. I was excited to try it, but unfortunately, it didn't quite live up to my expectations. Since my wife was ordering the prime rib, I tried the brisket based on our server's recommendation. It ended up being the biggest disappointment of the meal--it was very dry and lacked flavor. The prime rib was decent but nothing memorable, especially for the price. We visited on a quiet Sunday evening, and while the service was pleasant, it felt fairly average. After reading other reviews, it seems several guests have had a similar experience. One small thing that took away from the experience was the payment process. The server brought over a credit card machine and waited until I completed the transaction. Personally, I prefer having a little more privacy when paying the bill. I also noticed the suggested gratuity started at 22%, which felt a bit high to me. I understand restaurants rely on tips, but I prefer it when guests can make that decision without feeling rushed or pressured. The one thing Tam O'Shanter absolutely gets right is the atmosphere. The historic building, beautiful woodwork, and artwork create a unique dining experience that's worth appreciating. Overall, I really wanted to love Tam O'Shanter, but the food and service didn't justify the price. While the history and ambiance are impressive, I don't see myself returning and would recommend exploring other Los Angeles restaurants that offer better food and value. read more

This is such a beautiful place and their decorations are excellent! Had their Turkey dinner, it was quite nice. The food was very good but it is pricy and the Turkey portion was very small as was everything on the plate, seemed like a baby portion, but delicious! Our waitress had an old pro attitude, in 30's or so but really wasn't special. The busser in our dining room was very pleasant and friendly. The food server was mainly focused on taking our money, nothing much to her. It's very nicely decorated for the holidays. It's cozy an lite nicely. The food and ambience are very nice. I'd do very well as a food server here, make it a special feeling for diners. We certainly expect the best when we come here. Pass on the Fish and Chips. read more
