We frequent it often, especially when we're celebrating. Gerardo, our server, is fantastic. He's a mind reader. He knows what we want and when we want it and never misses a beat. We ordered the turkey platter and the cottage pie. The food was excellent. We also feasted on Tennent's beer. The ambiance, even on a Sunday, was friendly and entertaining. All in all, a great time! I recently visited Tam O'Shanter after hearing so many great things about its history and reputation. I was excited to try it, but unfortunately, it didn't quite live up to my expectations. Since my wife was ordering the prime rib, I tried the brisket based on our server's recommendation. It ended up being the biggest disappointment of the meal--it was very dry and lacked flavor. The prime rib was decent but nothing memorable, especially for the price. We visited on a quiet Sunday evening, and while the service was pleasant, it felt fairly average. After reading other reviews, it seems several guests have had a similar experience. One small thing that took away from the experience was the payment process. The server brought over a credit card machine and waited until I completed the transaction. Personally, I prefer having a little more privacy when paying the bill. I also noticed the suggested gratuity started at 22%, which felt a bit high to me. Supposedly need reservations even for outside seats...it was empty when we went though and was able to get a table. Recommend reservations! My husband and I tend to come here when we want prime rib in that moment so it's hard for us to get the seats we want considering we go out eat based on our cravings in the moment. Prime rib is good. Larry's steakhouse fan here so when I heard of this place, I knew I had to go check it out. Honestly, my experience wasn't a very good one however I loved how cute the resteraunt was and the vibe it had. They offer valet parking service so that was a nice touch. Had reservations and got seated within 10 minutes of checking in. Service was slow all night from beginning to end. There was a point in the night where literally looking for our server so we could get our bill and pay. After 15 minutes of waiting they finally came by our table. I always drove past this place and heard that they serve Lawrys prime rib. Decided to die in here on a random Saturday afternoon and order the prime rib for lunch. They don't have the spinning salad bowl. They just bring out the food to you so don't expect any presentation. The inside feels like an old pub. It is is very casual and nothing like a fancy prime rib restaurant. The reason why I like this place is because there is no lines or reservation needed. If you are craving the Lawrys prime rib, this is the place to get it. I had to knock down a star because the servers literally didn't seem like they wanted to work. I went to the legendary Tam O'Shanter this weekend after it being open over 100 years in Atwater Village. I'm on top of new restaurants in the 'hood! :P I was surprised how cute this classy Scottish sit down pub was on the outside. Charming building and such a gorgeous outdoor space. Once the weather warms a bit, I'll be back to dine under their twinkling lights next to the outdoor classic UK Phone Booth. We sat for a couple of minutes after checking in with the host before being seated. However I didn't mind as I got to sit by their cozy fire. Fun LA History: Walt Disney used to come here with his Imagineers and there is a special booth marked by a plaque noting this. Our server was impeccable, as was all staff bringing out food & clearing tables. Our dinners were out within minutes, such a speedy kitchen! Valet was great too, $9. Goodness, the meats here are money. I tried my friend's Lawry's World Famous Prime Rib which they are known for and loved it. He got Tam O Shanter's Cut which they say is most popular and it was downright delicious. I went with the corned beef platter and absolutely loved that, as well. It was a huge portion that I used the leftovers to make a sandwich from! I had creamed corn with it and loved that, the mashed potatoes & gravy weren't quite as exciting. This is another restaurant I've been going to for well over 30 years....as well as being another LA institution that is now the longest continuously operated restaurant owned by the same family in LA. It first opened in 1922 by Lawrence Frank and Walter Van de Kamp, who went on to start the Lawry's restaurant chain and is still owned by their descendants. They took on the title as oldest in LA with the closure of Pacific Dining Car during covid. I have fond memories of coming here just after college when some buddies who were born and raised in LA and had been coming since they were kids brought me for lunch after a little golf at the Los Feliz 3. Back then, they still had the sandwich bar which was a favorite pre-covid, and you would find a line all the way to the lobby during the lunch rush. Sad that it still hasn't been resurrected (although Gerry, the carver is still doing the carving, just from the kitchen). Speaking of longtime employees, I remember when Tony was the "new guy" with only a decade of seniority back when I first started coming. Like all the best neighborhood joints, it's that familiarity of longtime employees that really make a business feel like home, and being welcomed back by Tony when the dining room finally opened again after covid was reassuring...and he's now been there for well over 40 years. Back in the 40s before he moved to Burbank, Walt Disney Studios was based just across the river in Silver Lake where the Gelson's now stands, and the Tam was unofficially considered the executive dining room where Walt's favorite table is now identified with a plaque. Academy award nominated art director Harry Oliver created the Tam's whimsical storybook style together with studio carpenters, and the walls of the lobby are adorned with art and memorabilia that should also put the Tam on the list of any fan of Disney. As for the food, if you're looking for light and healthy, this isn't the place for you. It's hearty stick to your ribs Scottish fare. Prime Rib, corned beef, and brisket are what the Tam is known for...and trust me when I say the brisket melts in your mouth. Although the prices have risen a bit from Disney's time (a 1957 menu displayed in the lobby lists a Delmonico steak at $2.60 and a coffee was $0.15), the servings are still plentiful and well priced, so definitely come with an appetite. read more

I am very disappointed to be writing this review because I've been a long-time customer at this location. We were seated next to an older man hosting Trivia Tuesday using an extremely loud portable speaker. I don't understand why proper sound equipment isn't used if this is a weekly event. It was incredibly disruptive, it's hard to enjoy a meal when a speaker is blasting right next to you. While we were waiting for our food, the man suddenly vomited behind us. It was shocking and completely unacceptable. I immediately informed our waitress, who told the manager. When the manager came out, he looked at us as if he were annoyed or offended and simply said, "Sorry...?" as though we were wrong for bringing it to his attention. What made the situation worse was how it was handled. He cleaned the area without gloves and without any visible sanitation measures, then walked straight back into the kitchen. I was absolutely disgusted. Given that there was also a hepatitis A case reported a few months ago, this raised even more serious concerns about cleanliness and food safety. I was already hesitant about coming back because of that incident, but my family was visiting from out of town and I wanted to bring them here. We were going to be around the area so my bf asked the AI what was good around the area and this place came up. When we looked it up and we saw that they were the same as Lawrys, it was decided we had to come here. We love Lawrys in Beverly Hills and we had been talking about going back. They are located near Glendale by a residential area on a Main Street. There is valet only for $9.50 which is worth it as street parking is limited and spaces are small. From the moment you start walking in, the vibe is completely different than Lawrys. This is more casual and very fancy pub vibes. They have a nice garden walk to the front door with some Britain inspired decor and outdoor seating. Dinner starts at 5pm and we were early to our reservation. The lady at the front was super nice about it and noted that we were there and would let us know if an earlier spot opened up. She suggested to sit at the bar while we waited. We sat at the bar where the bartended gave us the happy hour menu good until 5pm, perfect for us. We ordered a beer each and crispy duck wings as appetizer. I ordered Guinness in tap which was great my bf had a PBR for just $4 during happy hour. The wings came reasonably quick and they were delicious! The had a lot of seasoning which was like Cajun and not too spicy. My bf loved the pickles which were kind of sweet. As we were almost done with our beers, the hostess came by to let us know our table was ready. We closed the bar check and moved on. We were surprised of how big this place is once you go past the bar. There are multiple indoor seating areas and one covered patio area. We were sat all the way in the back near the patio. The ambiance is still casual and very unique. We were brought complementary fresh bread and butter. Our server seemed to be nice and told us a bit about the history of the place. We decided to order a small garden salad with their vintage dressing and split a prince Charles cut with 1/2 creamed spinach and 1/2 creamed corn. The salad was a good size for us to share and the dressing tastes almost the same a Lawrys but slightly different. We were not offered and fresh pepper for our salad unlike the tables around us. Our main dish took very long to come out. We saw another table order the same thing after us and getting it before us. Somebody that was not our waitress finally brought our food out. We were a bit surprised as it didn't look like the other table's cut. Ours seemed to be 2 of the smaller pieces vs the very thick one cut in half. Our biggest disappointment was that our food was not hot, it was all luke warm except for the creamed corn. I like to eat my food fresh and not on the border of being cold. It was like it had been sitting out for a while before it was brought out to us. The flavor was very good and just Lawrys, but the service is for sure better at Lawrys. I ordered a sticky toffee which I loved. It had a crunchy outside and tender center. It was really good and would highly recommend. My bf got the berry triffle which was refreshing and good. Had dinner here for an event and there were definitely some pros and cons! The pros. The restaurant was decorated so beautifully for the holiday season! It was so cozy and I absolutely adored the holiday vibes. It felt like a little cottage! We also had GREAT service for our event! Our server was quick, attentive, and so understanding of our chaotic Filipino family. Some of the food was good, but most were misses for me. I ended up really loving the bread and butter as well as one of the hors d'oeuvres (the bacon wrapped fig). I also LOVED the hot fudge sauce on our sundae and the gravy was pretty good. For dinner, we were given a salad, The Tam O'Shanter cut of prime rib medium rare (with yorkshire pudding, creamed spinach, gravy, and mashed potatoes), and an ice cream sundae. The salad was just fine! I REALLY wanted to love the prime rib more as this is what they are known for, but the prime rib fell flat for me. It felt pretty underseasoned. It tasted much better dipped in some horseradish sauce and/or in the gravy. It just didn't have much flavor. Which was the same problem with most of the sides. The yorkshire pudding and creamed spinach needed some more salt and/or seasonings. Mashed potatoes were good! The gravy was great, but I just needed waaaay more of it. I had never been to a Lawry's restaurant before, so we did not know what to expect - the service was amazing and the lunch was delicious. This is reminisce of an old inn, the server told us this was the basis of Snow White's house and definitely has the same feel. It is a bit dark inside so give your eyes some time to adjust. First course: deviled eggs and devils on horseback (bacon wrapped dates). Very good! The eggs had a nice little kick and delicious with the pickled veggies. The dates were soft and gave a little sweetness to the bacon. Second course: Walt's chili - we ALL got this, and even though we have had the one at the Carnation Cafe at Disneyland, for some reason this tasted 100x better. Full of gooey stringy cheddar cheese it was so good! For a chili it was not salty, tasted homemade from scratch and was light enough to still move on to the rest of our meal. No one got the salad Third course: I upgraded to the Tam O'Shanter portion- I am not a fan of prime rib but theirs might just change my mind. This probably was the best prime rib I've ever had, and I have no idea why. This paired beautifully with their creamed horseradish and their mashed potatoes with gravy. I am not a fan of creamed spinach (this is probably my first time having it), but really enjoyed the Yorkshire pudding (reminds me of a giant profiterole/cream puff). The other options was a salmon or a burger. Fourth course: we got the trifles and the chocolate fudge sundaes-- the trifles are a little sweet for me (I think it's the strawberry sauce on top) but the combination of the fresh cream and cake is so so tasty. My fave defaults to the sundae - I had never had Fosselman's ice cream before but now I want to go to Alhambra just to go have more! This was so good topped with fresh cream and chopped almonds and their piping hot fudge. My husband made reservations here abt 2 months out for Christmas Eve and then today it was dangerous flash floods+evacuation zones in LA. Couldn't reschedule or cancel our reservations without a $50 penalty and then we were seated outside in the cold and rain. Highly disappointing, esp on a holiday! So basically, it was like we were forced to drive in dangerous conditions and park 5 blocks away, which who cares we hike abt 5 miles daily. But the entire situation put us in emotional duress. We arrive at said restaurant and we walked the entire parameter of the restaurant: 40% of the seats indoors were unoccupied. The wait staff still proceeded to seat us out of doors in the pouring rain, on Christmas Eve! NOT COOL. Not to mention Atwater isn't a great area of LA. As an LA native, best to spend time in neighboring Los Feliz or Hollywood Hills, if ya know what's good for ya. The ambience was very Rusty's Pizza in Santa Barbara. The food was very good but it is pricy and the Turkey portion was very small as was everything on the plate, seemed like a baby portion, but delicious! Our waitress had an old pro attitude, in 30's or so but really wasn't special. The busser in our dining room was very pleasant and friendly. The food server was mainly focused on taking our money, nothing much to her. It's very nicely decorated for the holidays. It's cozy an lite nicely. The food and ambience are very nice. What a great place with sooooo much history. Came to Tam O'Shanter for reservations we had did for The Table 31 Experience, "Walt Disney's Favorite Table". Price per guest $89 plus taxes. Staff here were very welcoming and our server was great on explaining the history of the building down to table 31 and to why the three options on the special menu were selected. Tried the prime rib which was very tender, needed a bit of seasoning but still good. The 31 Burger was a huge plate and delicious. One thing I do recommend is getting The Tam's Famous Chili. Came here with my girlfriend to celebrate our anniversary two days ago. I booked the Table 31 experience about 3 weeks in advance and attempted to get the 6:00 PM time. Unfortunately, I was too late. I had to book the 4 PM time slot, as the 8:00 PM time slot was a bit too late for us. If you are planning to do the experience for dinner on a Saturday at the ideal 6 PM time, expect to book at least a month in advance. The restaurant has valet parking, so we dropped off our car and made our way in. Along the way, there were many photo ops, including the bright red phone booth outside, and the dimly lit lobby with various paintings and pictures. We sat at the iconic Table 31, where Walt Disney as well as various Disney Imagineers sat and came up with ideas for Disney movies and parks. Our waiter, God bless his soul, was absolutely amazing! Extremely knowledgeable with the restaurant's deep history as well as Disney facts! My girlfriend and I were thoroughly impressed! As most courses only had two options, we opted to get all of the different options that was there. We also added the Scotch Mist cocktails, Walt's favorite drink at the restaurant. The cocktail was a bit too strong for my girlfriend, so the lovely bartender whipped up something non-alcoholic to pair with the drink. Glad to say, she was really surprised at how well the drink complemented the cocktail! Props to the bartender, you're a real one! As the courses progressed, our waiter brought us more and more Disney facts, which was great! We were also given parting gifts after our experience, which made the whole ordeal just that much more special! Hi, our First time at Tam O"Shanters, the moment we walked in we were greeted right away, and was seated, our waitress was MISSY, she was awesome, out going and went above and beyond, she took care of us with our whole meal, she continued to check on us and on other guests. My recent response to Tam O Shanter management when they asked me to please come back. -- After being a devoted customer of yours for over 45 years, where I actually made a point to be at your restaurant a minimum of 10 times each year, it was last year that multiple strings of terrible service and Price-gorging has caused me to no longer be interested in the Tam O Shanter as one of my top choices to entertain my guests, or, to even go myself. Since my last visit, which was approximately a year ago, I actually have taken all my guests and had my Prime Rib cravings resolved by Lawry's in Beverly Hills, which is further for me to drive and inconvenient, not as cozy of an atmosphere, but at least the service is way better than the Tam O Shanter and the price is reasonably price for the venue in the area that the restaurant is in. It deeply saddens me that I have had to depart from my relationship with Tam O Shanter based on its new management, but I had no other option. Please read my reviews in both Yelp and Google maps and you'll see exactly why I feel this way today as I've publicly expressed myself in the most recent reviews. And it's not just me, many recent reviews, especially around the time that I last went are giving the Tam O Shanter one stars, only because they couldn't give you zero stars to get a review done. Gerardo R was an amazing server. You can genuinely tell he cares about the experience he creates for his guests. Not only was he great with our table, but he was attentive to everyone around us, always going above and beyond, noticing the little details and anticipating what people needed before they even had to ask. He was kind, professional, and consistent the entire time. From the moment you sit down, the server is so attentive. They start you with their warm bread and butter as soon as you sit down so you have something to nibble on as you make your dining choices. We got the steak frites, prime rib, crispy duck wings, steak tips and wedge salad for our meal and it did not disappoint. We got the chocolate soufflé and the sticky toffee pudding for dessert and out of the two I would go with the soufflé. The ambiance is a cozy steakhouse and it has so much history! Apparently Walt Disney would go there and his animators, so you see little homages to Mickey throughout. Often imitated, but never replicated...the Tam O'Shanter is a delightful step into the past. This is what your new "local pub," built into what probably was a Radio Shack, tries to be, but ultimately fails because you'll never feel the weight of its history just by opening the door. If you want a taste of old LA, in new LA, this is the place to be. Like the Smoke House and Philippe's, this is a part of Los Angeles that has stood the test of time. When you walk in, you can imagine Walt Disney grabbing that brass handle too. It's not smoke filled anymore, but you can imagine Don Draper types lighting a cigarette at the bar as they order a whiskey. Everything here was crafted, not manufactured. The walls are adorned with artwork and artifacts, collected and curated from the century this place has existed. We were seated at a table where none of the chairs matched and it felt more like a home dinner table than one you'd find at a fancy restaurant. If a Chili's did this you'd think something was wrong, but here it feels delightfully quirky. When you walk in it's hard to miss a giant cabinet full of various bottles of spirits. To start our evening, I had to try one of their crafted cocktails and it did not disappoint. The perfect balance of flavors complimenting each other with every sip. It'd be pretty easy to sit there and have more than one. Maybe I should have, because that was the highlight of the evening. While the experience is inimitable, the menu feels like a vestige of the past and the prices are a harsh reminder that you're in the present. For my first visit I had to try their most famous item on the menu, the Lawry's Prime Rib. A healthy cut of meat, roasted and seasoned to perfection, served with mashed potatoes/gravy, creamed spinach or corn (I got the spinach), and some yorkshire pudding. I asked for medium but got something closer to medium rare, which wasn't bad, but medium rare prime rib tends to be stringy and chewier which this was. You do taste the quality of the meat and a dash of their famous seasoning salt adds even more flavor, but for 60 bucks I was just whelmed by this. The creamed spinach is amazing though, maybe the best I've had. Sure, this is a taste of old LA...but new LA is across the street in the form of a taco stand in a car wash and that might have better food. Don't get me wrong, the food was good and it's an enjoyable meal...but nostalgia is not an effective seasoning. The shepherds pie would have been perfect on a colder night. The salmon was cooked to perfection, although it was a pretty small portion. The french onion soup was classic and so was the wedge salad. We were too full for dessert, but because it was my birthday, they brought out a tiny sampling of a strawberry shortcake parfait and those few bites tasted great...but for all the hand crafted stained glass, woodwork, and the history embedded in the soul of the place, the quality/taste of the food just doesn't match up to the experience. Would I come back? I absolutely plan on doing so, but maybe just a trip to their pub. You get all the history, ambiance, and quality of service with a simplified, cheaper menu...and access to all the drinks and cocktails they offer. Maybe this was the only place to get a meal like this in old LA, but new LA has a lot more to offer. Is Tam O'Shanter an anachronism? Is it something lost in time? A century later, it definitely still has a place, and it's something you should experience at least once. read more
