I was passing through Indianapolis and managed to catch this terrific mural honoring Tamika Catchings, one of the state's most beloved athletes. She's a legend on and off the court, and the artwork reflects that with bold colors, strong lines and a sense of motion that befits someone who spent her career redefining what hustle looks like. Catchings played all 16 seasons of her professional career for the Indiana Fever, setting and breaking many records and playing in 10 WNBA All-Star games. She is a four-time Olympic gold medalist, and led the Fever to the WNBA national championship in 2012.
The mural is on the side of an apartment building east of the intersection of North New Jersey Street and East Vermont Street in downtown Indianapolis near the downtown corridor and it is part of a broader effort to highlight local icons. The Arts Council notes that it celebrates her impact as a player, mentor, and community leader, and you can see that in the way the portrait balances intensity with warmth. It's impressive - tall and bright and impossible to miss. It was unveiled in July 2025.
I had to work hard to find a piece of public art in this town that wasn't already added by Joseph G. or Ken N. or Tank G. but here we are. And it holds its own as a sharp tribute to an Indiana favorite and worth a stop if you're exploring the city's public art.
