The Harbour Island Lighthouse in Tampa sits inside a gated residential section of Harbour Island,…read morewhich means there is no public access unless you live in that community. No public paths lead to the lighthouse itself. The good news is that it is fully visible from Channel Drive, where you can park easily and admire it from across the water. As a visual accent on the shoreline, the lighthouse works well. From Garrison Channel or from the public walkways near the Harbour Island Bridge, you can see it rising above the waterfront homes. It adds a bit of charm to the island's profile, especially at sunset when the light softens and the water reflects the color. Up close, it's clear that this is not a traditional lighthouse and was never meant to function as one. Instead, it is an architectural flourish for the neighborhood rather than a navigational aid. It was built as a decorative landmark in the late 1980s or early 1990s, during the period when the island was being redeveloped into residential homes. I thought the security was visible from the metal detection at the entrance to the sheriff officer by the desk. Once inside, the children area is located just to the right. It was very clean and an employee was consistently reshelving books that the kids took off the shelf to look at. There are two computers in the children's area to explore learning activities. The seating/furniture was okay but not super kid friendly. I would have liked to see some bean bag chairs or a carpeted area for a casual relaxed reading. It was not crowded at all just after the lunch hour and it was a good time for all of us.

The children's area is almost nonexistent and the lack of parking is still an issue. This location is the most convenient to my house, but I would rather drive further to the Jan Platt library because there is plenty of parking, a larger selection of books, and there is an incredible children's section that is walled off so you don't have to worry about young children disturbing the peace at the library. This is one of the smallest libraries in Tampa so chances are that they won't carry the book(s) that you're looking for.

The City of Tampa's Police Department is one of the finest law enforcement organizations that I've…read moreever had the pleasure of working with. In full disclosure, I do not work for the Tampa Police Department, but our paths cross regularly through my specialized training and work with the City of Tampa's Office of Emergency Management. I had to run down to TPD headquarters this past week to drop off some paperwork and update my records. Since I was not a guest of the City I am unable to pass judgment on the comfort of the mattresses in lockup, or the quality of the meals that they serve their overnight guests. We'll have to wait for someone else to write a review about the City's drunk tank. Sorry Kelleigh! Police Chief Castor and her team are incredibly respectful to both the residents and the guests of the City of Tampa, and as evidenced last year during the Republican National Convention those basic acts of kindness go a long ways towards protecting the reputation of the City. It's always sad to walk up to the front door and view the memorial to the fallen officers, but I always walk out the door feeling good about the people who protect and serve the place that I live.

I was in and out of the place in less than 15 minutes (which matched about how much time it took for me to find a parking spot!). Staff was polite.

They have police officers at the bottom entrance when you enter which about 90% of them completely ignore you. Not sure if they HAVE to man the post or choose to but they should be more welcoming as patrons come into that atmosphere in our community. If they don't have books you need, they are pretty good at ordering them. They have large meeting rooms and small ones that you can reserve. Color and black n white printers. They have self service kiosks where you can check out books as well . Plenty of electrical sockets for your electronics while working or studying.

This is the University of Tampa's library. It has a military history section. The library is a bit…read moremusty. There doesn't seem to be a Florida history section and the library collection is mostly college course related. Fortunately the Public Library is just across the river and interlibrary loans are possible for students seeking access to a wider selection of offerings. I was surprised that there weren't computers to search the collection. Apparently you have to ask at the reference desk. The library is a bit musty but comfortable.

UT has once again kicked up their game! This library was pretty average when I was a student but…read morenow it's seems ahead of the game compared to other libraries I've recently visited. There are many new upgrades all around campus. I've noticed some new features specifically in the library. There's now phone charging stations throughout the library, as well as various seating areas. For instance there's high top desks, regular cubicles, couches, comfy chairs with built in desks, and spacious tables for group meet ups. There's also more private open tables for study groups. The library is well lit. I love that there are a lot of windows, bringing in natural light in addition to the overhead lights. For the most part it is quiet (besides the guy who's currently eating chips and clearing his throat In between bites!). I used to always notice it smelled pretty bad a few years ago but I wasn't hit in the face with any odor today. So that's good. The bathrooms have been updated with tile flooring and walls. No more stalls with paint from the nineties! Sometimes it's easy to get lost in time when there are no windows. I wish they had a snack bar here but then again, I think the smell of food and the sound of eating could be highly distracting. There's no real security when you walk in. So that's always been on my list of negatives. The only security feature is sadly not for you, me, or anyone in here. It's for the books. So don't try stealing an encyclopedia. Another downside is the lack of parking close to the library. I think there may be two spots (one is for handicapped individuals). Overall, I think UT offers a very innovative atmosphere for its students to succeed and feel comfortable while studying. Enjoy! Xo
