I should start with a confession: I am not a toy soldier aficinado. But my husband is, and when he…read moreheard about this place, he was jumping up and down with excitement. I was bracing myself for intense boredom, but actually, much of what's in L'iber is quite interesting. True, it's toy soldiers! But some of the dioramas - like the battle of Waterloo - are quite stunning, and really allow the viewer to inhabit the scene. In fact, I found myself enjoying the dioramas that set a scene much more than the display cases which simply showed the uniforms that Spanish soldiers wore in different eras. Perhaps most unusual was the last gallery where the displays turned more, shall we say, adult. Don't miss the Roman bath scene, or some of the recreations of ancient myths - suddenly figurines are involved in sexy scenes, and it's surprising - and interesting - to see how they get put to use outside of military contexts.
A footnote: if you have a toy soldier lover in your family, or even someone who loves miniatures, don't miss the gift shop- they sell expensive soldiers, but they also sell reasonably priced TinTin and Asterix figurines.
