(Also provided: moral support while growing out the bangs, which I very much needed.) I have medium-dark blonde hair and Brittany has a light touch with highlights which brightens up the overall look of my hair color without giving me dark roots to worry about and maintain. I don't have the time or money to mess around with roots; subtle highlights are the goal for my hair and I'm consistently pleased with the results. The salon is in downtown Saratoga so you are paying Saratoga prices (sigh, I'm still a midwestern girl at heart, and the cost of living up here really hurts that heart). But, for Saratoga, this is the first place where I've reliably received haircuts and color that I like, can get an appointment in a reasonable amount of time, and the actual cut and color don't take foreverrrrrr. My previous salon once took a full 3.75 hours for a simple (and not that great) cut and highlight, which is *absurd*, and why I jumped ship. Please note that the Strand does *not* accept credit cards. Cash or check only! Parking can be found on the street if you're lucky, in the public library parking lot, or in the garages on Putnam St and Railroad Place. I think all of the parking in the area is 2 hour time limit between 8am-6pm.

Booking online is quick and easy and I was able to get a slot in prior to my event that evening. I was greeted and welcomed in with lots of energy and things quickly turned to confusion for me as I was not sure why: 1. I needed to bring my hair dry to an up-do appointment (I have curly hair) -- every up do I've ever had at any other salon they actually have washed my hair first and then did my hair * my stylist told me it was not possible to dry my hair straight and do an up do in the time of an updo appointment. This caused major confusion and made my experience not really enjoyable as I was wondering why the stylist was mad I came to the appointment with wet hair. Additionally, I went online to check "how long" is an up do schedule for and its scheduled and priced the same as a wash cut and style at 1 hour and 15 minutes. My hair never takes more than around 20 minutes to dry and honestly, even without a Brazilian, my hair only took 40 minutes, which means it would leave 35 minutes for up doing. ----- I'm not sure if the stylist was rushing due to being overbooked or wanting a break or being mad my hair was wet. We had good chats and it turned into a decent experience about 20 minutes in once my hair was dried. ----- It is my fault I didn't come with any pictures I guess of what I wanted and they had no styling books that I could see. I told the stylist I wanted a "low bun thing that looks like a fold over similar to a braid that is a bit loose and has a bit of height and volume to the top and sides." Ultimately, it turned out alright - I had felt rushed the entire appointment which was booked for 1 hr 15 minutes, the stylist finished exactly at the 45 minute mark and that's with me taking 4 minutes to settle in. So the hair was 41 minutes for an hour and fifteen minute appointment. When I ask meta AI to create what I told the stylist, the hair I wanted came up, however, it was not what I received in person. Ultimately, the up do worked, photos came out okay and I can't blame anyone but myself for the fly aways and style, because I didn't bring photos. I don't know if I'll do this service here again, because 45 minutes of a 75 minute service and being told it was not possible due to me coming in with wet hair and not getting a shampoo.... This wasn't ideal. The fact you want clients coming in with dry hair should be somehow communicated to the client in the future. Plus, the stylists have different blow dryers, so getting a Dyson is not guaranteed. The experience was a lesson learned.

I booked a curly haircut because I specifically wanted someone who knew how to work with curly hair. I had actually intended to book with Renee, who specializes in curly hair, but accidentally selected Eileen. Eileen was very kind, and this review is not meant to attack her personally. However, it became obvious during my appointment that she was not experienced with cutting or styling curly hair. She even told me, "I don't know how your hair is," which immediately made me nervous. At that point, I wish she had simply been honest and recommended that I reschedule with someone who specializes in curly hair instead of continuing with the appointment. The experience only got worse from there. My hair wasn't properly moisturized or prepped, she didn't seem to know how to detangle or style curly hair, and I actually had to brush my own hair, apply my own products, and define my own curls. Most importantly, far too much of my hair was cut off because it wasn't cut using curly hair techniques. I paid $80 for what was advertised as a curly haircut, yet I essentially had to finish the service myself. Hair takes a long time to grow back, and I'm devastated by how much length I lost. My issue isn't that Eileen was unfriendly--she was actually very nice. My issue is that if a stylist isn't comfortable or experienced with a certain hair type, especially one that requires specialized cutting techniques, they should say so and refer the client to someone who is. That would have been the professional thing to do. To make matters even more disappointing, I reached out to the salon afterward through both Facebook messages and the contact form on their website in hopes of discussing my experience, but I never received a response. Being ignored after such a disappointing service only added to my frustration. If you have curly hair, I would strongly recommend confirming that your stylist has experience with curly hair before your appointment. I hope the salon takes this feedback seriously and improves both its communication and the way curly-haired clients are matched with qualified stylists. No one should leave a salon feeling the way I did after trusting them with their hair.

Unfortunately, the reservationist, front desk staff, and spa attendants made many mistakes, lacking a significant level of professionalism you would expect at a spa of this caliber. These problems included making a mistake on the second day with one of my reservations where I was sent a male instead of female massage therapist for a 1.5 hour massage. When I brought it to their attention, the massage therapist (not the front desk administrative person) offered a half hour massage with a woman instead of 1.5 hour to "fix" the mistake. I told them I wanted to speak with the front desk person and strongly objected to the supposed solution; they came up with an hour massage with a free add-on (hot stone massage). I had to work hard for this - they made things much more stressful than it should have been. They also told us wrong information about their tipping policies for certain massage therapists and made it really difficult to tip people, did not tell massage therapists to wear masks for both of us (which we had requested ahead of time and they had done the first day), had a cold spa attendant greet us who was suppose to make us feel welcome but lacked warmth and social graces, another spa attendant touched me repeatedly (which you do not do with out consent), etc. When the owner, Denise DuBois, called to talk about the numerous problems I had outlined in an email, she was highly defensive. I felt SO tense and uncomfortable with how she behaved towards me that even though she apologized for our experience at the spa and ultimately offered two free massages (for myself and my husband), I/we could never imagine going back there; we did not accept the offer. We do NOT ever want to go back there again. There was a significant lack of warmth and empathy for the level of problems and mistakes from staff and the stressful impact of this in real time and when discussed later - it was quite shocking. We have been to spas and all types of treatment providers in the U.S. and in Europe and have never been treated so unprofessionally by the administrative end of a business. It clearly comes from the top down and is very problematic. Added note: I have a friend who warned me against this place, because she had been there a half dozen times, and they made a mistake every single time with her reservation. When I told this to Denise Dubois, she wanted to know the name of my friend (talk about this request being inappropriate), and she found it hard to believe what I was saying (again, inappropriate). I was really taken aback; a professional does not do this. My friend recommended another spa in Saratoga Springs that she loves. I am going to try them.
