Highly recommend this riding school. I'm seeing a lot of false reviews and it's extremely disheartening. Jen (the owner) and her staff are highly qualified professionals who put the safety and best interests of their customers as well as their horses FIRST and above all. If you're looking for a riding school that can take you or your child to the next level and accomplish your goals as a rider as well as build confidence, this is the stable for you. I went to camp here. On the last day (Friday) we were promised a trail ride, but instead were made to assist a group of grown-ass men who came to do a trail ride instead. Owner/instructor figured that she could use the children/teenage campers as free helpers without compensation of the trail ride. Also, the grandmother was verbally abusive to the campers. The outhouse used a large blue barrel for water supply. When it was empty, the campers needed to find their own way to brush their teeth in the morning (by dragging the blue barrel and finding a hose to reach it, was the water even potable??). When they were finished and went to eat breakfast, the grandmother started harassing the campers, saying things like "do you enjoy being late and making people wait?". Who's fault and job is it to make sure the water supply didn't run out in the mornings so that campers could have adequate access to basic necessities? Certainly not the campers who have been there for all of 2 days! read more

This barn, located in Prince Edward County, about 20 minutes south of Trenton is on a great property. It's owned by an older woman - and her daughter does the coaching and operates other aspects of the business. Some people have commented that they buy horses for cheap and sell them for more. Of course they do. That's their business. That's like saying car dealerships buy cars for cheap and sell for more. They are in business and have a right to make profit like every other business. I have seen other very reputable stables locate horses for free, work with them and flip them for 10k. You are paying for the barn's expertise in identifying and training the horse. Some people have commented that some of the horses they sell have problems. Show me a person who doesn't have a problem and I'll show you a horse that doesn't have a problem. Every rider has needs. Every rider does *not* need a perfect horse. There are many horses with - for example - foot problems that can make great mounts for general interest fun riders with good health management for a very reasonable cost. Don't discount horses just because they've got minor controllable problems. Also, very often the owner causes behavioral problems, so please, don't be too quick to blame the barn you get the horse from. Get professional help to retrain yourself before you blame the barn you bought it from. This is definitely a buyer-beware situation (just like buying a used car). You need to know what you need/want and you need to shop for it, including vet inspections and an independent coaching assessment. There's nothing wrong with how this barn is handling their horse sales that I've seen. Having said the above, I do see some problems with the business. There is a lack of a customer oriented view. My daughter signed up as a working student for a summer which was to be 9 weeks in total. At about the 5 week mark she indicated she wanted to come home as things just weren't working for her. There were a few things going on that were making it difficult to enjoy the experience. (1) a co-worker who lacked a good work ethic along with items that were mysteriously going missing (2) a lack of appreciation or care for the summer students - including instances where the students were not allowed (by the property owner) time to drink, eat, or use the washrooms as chores where deemed more important. I was shocked when my daughter told me about this. Additionally, on at least 2 occasions, the owners walked into the student housing after lights out (10p one night, 11p another night) to get after them about various things not being done correctly. This shows a lack of boundaries and borders on abusive behavior. Surely this feedback could have waited until business hours the next day when it could have been delivered in a professional constructive and unemotional manner instead of in the middle of the night. At 7 weeks, at my daughter's request we took her home. The owners had an opportunity to provide a great learning environment, and build great relationships, which would have brought the students back the following year, possibly with friends. Instead thru mis-management of the working student program and treating them as disposable, they've lost workers and potential future income. (For example, since we are in the area regularly, had it worked out we would have gone back for monthly lessons and quite possibly looked at sale horses from them. I see signs that the daughter is trying to build a great business. My daughter enjoyed her coaching and I saw personally saw signs that the daughter cared about and wanted the best for the people she's coaching. I hope that the daughter can sort out the problems. There is a great potential in the location and what's been built to-date, but current practices are stopping it from getting to the next level. If I was the business owner here, this is what I would focus on: 1) Document the work and expectations for staff. 2) Fix the accommodations. 3) Set working hours and stick to them. 4) Listen. If you listen and consider what's being said without making accusations at the people where are trying to communicate, one might learn something. People are very willing to share their concerns if one just simply shuts up and listens. I truly hope the barn finds their way to success, but it will require big changes in thinking about who the customer is and how to treat people in a way the builds success for all involved. Would I return: No. Would I recommend: I think that for casual trail rides and as a boarding barn, if you can deal with the personalities involved successfully, it might work. Never say never. Overall I think the horses are well cared for and I've seen horses come in from abusive homes and 4 weeks later they are a different horse, so no concerns on my side with horse care. read more

I truly advise you read the "10 other reviews that aren't recommended" before making the decision to attend, or have your children attend, this horrible facility. First of all, I found this summer camp online just looking for somewhere to be around horses for a while.. Unfortunately, I had to rely on their website to decide wether or not this would be a suitable barn to stay at for a week, because I was not from the area (4-5h away to be exact). I ended up reading the reviews for this place the night before I left to camp. It was quite unsettling to see what people had to say about the place, seeing as I was leaving the next day, and had already paid so it was too late at the time to back out. But being the understanding person I am, just figured the people writing the reviews were being a bit too strict, or judgmental.. So I eventually shrugged it off and let the excitement set back in. After a very long drive (4 and a half hours), my parents and I had finally arrived. As we pulled in to the place, I had tears streaming down my cheeks because I was petrified to be staying in this rundown place for the next week. The grass hadn't been cut in ages, there were many horses stuck in one small paddock, and the "trailer/small building" that the campers would be staying in was extremely rundown.. There were bunk beds crammed all together in the corner, there was a small fan but no air conditioning or insulation (not to mention it was 30 degrees out and 40 with the humidity). When my dad simply stated that the farm wasn't what he was expecting, you could tell the owner was a complete bitch!! Two girls took my dad and I on a tour while my mom waited in the car, and she heard the owner say "oh here we go again.. What do they expect for 400 bucks?" once we left for the tour. My dad and I talked to the two girls who were showing us around, and we were asking questions such as, is there a shower and stuff like that.. And the girls said there was an outside shower (that didn't warm up) and an out house for the week. After talking with my very understanding parents, they decided that it wasn't safe, and they wouldn't be comfortable with me staying there, and I agreed 100%! So my dad went up to the owner, and simply asked, seeing as we drove for hours to get here and I wouldn't be staying, if we could get our money back. And the owner just roller her eyes and replied very bluntly, no. So we got in the car and left, without getting our 500$ back. That is how horrible the place was, and how horrible the owner was. I can only speak in regards of the summer camp. I mean, Who knows, maybe the lesson program is amazing and the owners daughter is much nicer, but all I know for certain is that the summer camp isn't worth 1$. She should be paying people to send their kids here. It is child abuse (not physically of course, but the facilities i mean..) In conclusion, if I could give Tanglewood's summer camp and facilities -10 stars, I would.. Be very careful, as others have said, the website is extremely, extremely misleading! Great opportunity to have a safe and enjoyable experience to ride a trail horse. Most horses have lots of experience and know their jobs very well. As far as burnt up grass, that's very true as we are experiencing a Level 3 drought this summer in this area. The priorities is for water for horses and cleaning hours related items as needed. I have a horse boarded there and he receives great care and it's wonderful knowing that he is such good hands! read more

Lisa G must have a problem because she is totally misleading. I have bought lots of horses from them for my school and all have been exaclty what they were told to be. The owners are always nice and helpful if I am interested in a horse and they know it will not work for what I need they tell me, I would and will deal with them again as I like honesty. They always let you do a vet check so if there was something wrong with them like Lisa G is saying doing vet checks would show if something was wrong so Lisa G must have a personal problem. They sure are not reducing thier prices either since they price they well in the first place. People should make thier minds up for themselves instead of just reading some person that is posting on the internet anonymously on the internet. read more

OH My God!!! I can't believe how bad this place is. Last week we went for a family trail ride with my brother and 5 kids ranging from 8 to 17 yrs old. The owner was out right rude on the phone when I made the reservation so it kind of raised a flag for me but we went anyways. Beside the owner and her daughter being rude and with zero interest in their customers, the famous trail they promise is nothing but a dried patch of land with some bushes here and there. We have done this kind of activity before with my family and they have been all nice and positives experiences. This time, everybody just wanted to go home. Please don't go to this establishment. Pay more, but avoid this place!! It's a scam !!! read more

The camp at Tanglewood farms ruined my self confidence, dignity and independence gotten from horse-back riding. Sorry for anyone that said that this was a good stables. I went to camp being older than the required age, but they accepted me anyways. I had the worst experience of my life. Never at all have I never liked being with horses, but this one did it for me. I've had 5 years of riding experience (jumping and cantering) and the instructor was extremely bad. I fell off on one of her horses because she was cantering extremely fast and I couldn't control her. She blamed me, not to mention she switched horses with my friend because she as well fell of the same horse as me. I sprained my ankle badly from the fall and she kept treating me as if i was spoiled because i had to sit out on some activities because of my ankle. She still made me do the horse work (feed and grain, etc.) and yelled at me for not being fast enough. I am not exaggerating when i say that from working after a bad sprain led me to have ankle pain to THIS DAY. So she was very rude and heartless towards me. She mocked me and my friend (who was also in the same level) because she had kids at the camp that she taught from the beginning and they progressed fast and was doing the same stuff as us. She only cares about people that ride from the beginning her stables. She yelled at the kid that ASKED her to go to the bathroom. ASKED!. That poor girl got yelled so loudly at, she started to cry afterwards. Not to mention her son and daughter were brats and spoiled and participated in the lessons with us. They are the worst at controlling there horses, and they kept cutting me off right before I was about to jump a vertical. That's very dangerous. They kept whining, complaining and screaming when they didn't get what they wanted, IN and outside the ring. Also one horrible thing that was done. As you can see I wanted to leave. I felt extremely homesick. So my lovely sweet mom came and visited me and brought me and my friend to DQ. When we came back it was 9:00pm. So me and my mom and my friend started to talk quietly on the patio. The Grandmother came and yelled at me and my mother for apparently making another kid homesick. Luckily my mother being rational said "okay and left" avoiding a fight and the grandma said "You can go and you can take your daughter with you!!!". Afterwards the grandmother came and screamed at me and and said somethings that made me cry that night in bed. Another thing that happened was they never did the trail ride lunch they advertised on their website. They were booked with a ride for a Christians group. and we didn't get a makeup lessons or trail ride. it was like a slap in the face because it would be a nice break from all the oppressive lessons. if that wasn't enough, we had to help these "fat men" as the owner said, onto their horses. They barely did half the things that were said on their website. In conclusion, I would advise anyone wanting to sign their son or daughter up for the camp here to NOT because it will wreck their self confidence and dignity gained from horse-back riding. You will put your son or daughter though a week of hell x 1000. i honest to god, hope you wont. read more

Don't buy from them, they drug the horses they're selling. I asked if the horse had no vices and the owner told me no. However, when I brought the horse home I found that was not the case as she reared and was dangerous to handle as well as work with. The horse when I went to see it did not act at all this was and was polite and respectful, had no problem tacking up and being worked with. For the first few days when I had the horse home she was an angel and was exactly the same as when I saw her, however, a few days later her rudeness began to show. It took me months to get the horse to just lead and stand in the cross ties well and be handled without rearing, striking or trying to push you over. In hind sight I wish I had never bought this horse as the owner of the barn and the horse were rude. The barn owner was rude and disinterested when talking to her and she was not truthful. Just a warning to anyone buying a horse from here that they are not as experienced as they seem and the owner is not truthful about their abilities and overprices them. read more

I also attended with Christian F the same day and came away with the same opinion. The owner was aloof and indifferent, deceitful and ignorant. When my fiance, who has previous experience, was riding one of the horses we had expressed an interest in, brought it to a complete stop, still with hands on reigns and no abrupt moves, the horse, an apaloosa, bolted, throwing her off and then tramping her. At NO time did the owner show any concern/empathy or make inquiry as to how she was doing. The first thing out of her mouth when asked/challenged as to what happened was an accusatory "what did you do" out of her mouth. It turns out, she apparently buys from auctions, keeps the horses for brief periods and then tries to resell at a profit. The horses are presented as well mannered, boarded and well rode horses, yet are not. Two of the horses we looked at that day had been there for only weeks to maybe a month or two. I would encourage all interested in purchasing horses, or learning to ride, especially if children are involved, to give Tanglewood a wide berth. I would fear for anyone's safety. read more

I have 2 girls that go to Tanglewood every year for Summer Camp for at least 2 weeks each summer 3 if we can fit it in. They always ride a lot and have never had a problem with the coaches. The showers are not in the house and never have been at least in the 4 years we have been going. I have always found the owners and staff the be friendly and helpful never had a problem with any of them. My kids always got to ride twice a day, they also did swimming, trampoline, bonfires and movie nights. So I think they have a pretty busy day. My kids are not around horses the rest of the year so do not have a lot of experience but have never had any problem with the instructors. I reccommend send your kids to this camp, every kids I have seen on Friday always seems sad to leave and my kids have made lots of friends through Tanglewood.
