I handed my iMac in to be sold and asked them to save the contents on it before wiping it. They didn't. Years of memories lost.

If you are a Mac user, Tantra Computers is the only business that you need to know about in Bristol. I bought my iBook from them several years ago, and have had first rate support ever since. On the outskirts of the city in Brislington (just off the Bath Road), away from the seething hubbub of the centre, Tantra is a low-key enterprise that quietly goes about its business. Pete, the owner, is effortlessly knowledgeable, and Sam, his right-hand man, is one of those twenty-something, terabyte driven, IT creative's, with a solution for everything. If they x-rayed his brain, they'd find a motherboard with processing speeds that developers can only dream of. Together they can resolve any issue that you could conceivably present them with. Hardware prices are competitive, but it's on the software and add-on services that you can save yourself a substantial amount of cash. They offer eminently affordable computing to people who want to get the most out of their machines. If your needs comprise of a solid hardware platform, with a software rich capability, you would be spending a lot of money unnecessarily if you went anywhere else. read more

I bought an iMac and various accessories from Tantra and was very pleased with the pre- and post-sales support. The price was good, I'd definitely use Tantra again. read more

Second hand and over priced, the staff can be very offputting. I've often wondered if they actuall ever want to sell anything. Inside the shop is more like a hobby room than a shop, with bits of computers everywhere. That's fine, but unless you specifically need an old model mac, look elsewhere. read more

Customer service means more than just a smile or not, it's about integrity and whether you will ever go back. The extraordinary unpleasantness of the older man in the shop, and his willingness to change the price of services after you've agreed on them, would usually be cause for a lawsuit if you could be bothered. But like me, you won't be - you'll just go elsewhere instead. Do not use this place, it props up the idea that if someone can specialise in something, they can be as rude as they want. read more

Be warned. I bought a second hand mac from this store that started to break down in 4 weeks as it had liquid damage inside it from a previous owner. Be careful. read more

History
Established in 1973.
Qualified as a graphic designer I was a printer and designer an early user of Computers and particularly Macs and ran the Macintosh User Group in Bristol . This led to us importing Macs from the US when few were available here. Eventually the computer side of the business took over from the print and design side and we became exclusively a Mac Computer shop. We still offer digital printing, web design, internet connection and a whole range of peripheral services.
Meet the Business Owner: Pete D.
Grammar school in Liverpool, Qualified Graphic Designer at Liverpool Chester and Birmingham Art Colleges, also artist and photographer. Formative overland trip to India in 1971, following a spiritual trail led to starting a Company on our return called Tantra meaning 'interwoveness" - (and ancient esoteric scripture). Married in 1969 with 2 boys from first marriage. Remarried after death of my first wife and had then another son. Lived in London and now for many years in Bristol. Obsessed with paragliding and fly many competitions and Cross Country flights filming high mountains in Scotland and the Alps. Love painting, photography skiing, and hill walking with Theo and Frances

I find some of the other reviews on here tell me more about the reviewer rather than the reviewed. Pete has been providing amazingly helpful service since I first bought a Mac from him 20+years ago. I was originally recommended to go to him by Bristol's No.1 Photoshop retoucher (I'm an advertising photographer so work with all the big Agencies). I haven't regretted my choice - absolutely sterling service. I just called him (for the first time in years) to ask some advice and he spent almost 20 minutes explaining exactly what I needed to do to fix my problem (on a Mac I bought three years ago!) free of any charges! Try getting that sort of service anywhere else. He mentioned how down he was about a couple of poor reviews so this is my entirely unsolicited shout out to tell everyone what a great source of all things Mac he offers. My next Mac will be coming from Pete when I need to upgrade eventually and it will be the 6th or 7th I have had from him over the years - he even offers a great deal on second hand stuff and hard to get items so he's not like the Apple Store and just pushing you into the latest expensive new kit. Given that Macs cost pretty much the same everywhere I'd much rather buy from a helpful local expert like Pete than a faceless mail-order box-shifter. Thoroughly recommended. I don't normally write reviews but I just had to correct the previous one. Funny how different people get different impressions isn't it? I have been buying Macs from Tantra for over 15 years (ten Macs and counting). Consequently I know them well but my only business connection with them is as a satisfied customer (they were recommended to me by another satisfied customer by the way). The shop IS a tad unconventional but it's a friendly Alladin's cave staffed by the most wonderfully helpful people I have ever come across in the computer world. As a small retailer they do have to charge pretty much the full going rate for Macs but where can you get Macs at massive discounts with Apple's draconian attitude to discounters? Add in the extras Pete and his staff can help with such as top advice about what NOT to bother with and the value is unbeatable. Don't be put off by the lack of a huge glass staircase and a spotty teenager selling you hottest kit. Do be turned on by serious advice and the chance of a cuppa. Just for the record I always buy new kit from them and it arrives fully prepped and ready to go with all the extras like additional RAM, Hard drives etc etc installed at a decidedly non rip-off Apple Store price. I have bought both new and refurbished macs from Tantra since 2013 and will continue to do so even though I now live overseas and have the added cost of shipping. As other reviews have noted, both Sam and Pete know their stuff. The software extras provided are a huge add on and make any hardware discount you might find elsewhere to be negligible. read more

Excellent set up for my two purchases, an iMac and a MacBook Pro. Any niggles with the Macs and software have been sorted out straight away. Great knowledge and good at telling me what I needed to know and not what I didn't. read more
