I ordered the Sai Oua lava egg plate, pork jowl on the side, and khanom krok. First of all, holy hell, that egg was SO soft and yummy. I loved how it was prepared--the texture was amazing, and it was seasoned to perfection with such a savory flavor. The sausage was good, but the pork jowl was where the meal really shined. Next time, I'd definitely get the grilled pork jowl lava egg plate instead. I can be pretty picky with pork, but this one melted in my mouth and had so much flavor. The khanom krok was beautiful and a great dish to order if you have friends to share it with. For me, one bite was more than enough as a sweet little dessert at the end of the meal. We hadn't so she explained their menu and told us about their specials. Everything sounded so interesting, we wanted to order them all or wished we had more in our party of 2 so we can share all the dishes. We started with Nam Tao Hu which is a warm mug of lightly sweetened soy milk with seeds and beans. They describe it like a hug from mom, and that's exactly how you would explain how comforting this drink was. We ordered: Grilled Pork Jowl - OMG!! I think I died and went to heaven! Chiang Mai regional Thai breakfast/ brunch spot that is really popular in the Berkeley area. Came here with my parents on the weekend and as expected, there was a line. (It'a popular and the restaurant is pretty small). This place has a really cozy vibe because it kind of feels like a converted residential spot. And I'm not an architectural expert, but the windows have a Tudor style feel to them. The owner was here and she was getting people in and out as soon as she could. Everyone there was very friendly and accommodating, especially since my parents are getting a little old. We got a table inside eventually away from the draft coming from the entrance. We ordered the khanom krok to start and we ended ordering a few mains but shared everything family style. This ain't your regular Thai spot with creamy/sweet curries. The food here is authentic and straight out of Chiang Mai. We came here for an early (10am) brunch to skip the lines and it was totally worth it. The staff were super friendly and had good recommendations. It's definitely more on the expensive side given the relatively small portions but I think it's still worth it if you're an adventurous eater looking for new stuff to try once in a while. We got the black cod curry and the crab omelet. The sauce that came with the crab omelet was the real star of the show and we wanted to bottle it up for home. Then was seduced by the special, a crab dish that features the lava egg over rice ($40). We arrived at around 11:30AM and got a table at the pretty outdoor patio section around 1PM, quite a wait but the weather was nice outside so we didn't mind! But pork jowl was amazing, it has a perfect crips on the edge and tastes great, they marinated it really well, I truly think I will do this type of protein instead of the crab for lava eggs next time. Gaeng Hung Le (sizzling skillets with pork belly) were the star of my meal, I love the fried rice that came with it so much, it was so flavorful. The pork belly texture was tender and soft, the curry sauce itself has multiple layers of flavor, so complex but so good, it was spicy, peanut-y, slightly sweet and salty. Yummy Northern Thai brunch spot with friendly staff. The brunch is waitlist only no reservations so expect a wait on weekends. Thankfully, they take your phone number and text you when the table is almost ready so you have about 5 min to get back. Parking wise, I was able to find a street parking spot within walking distance fairly easily. The food was yummy and it's perfect to eat at on a sunny day outside. The inside is also super cute and looks like a little cottage. I find that most Thai Iced teas are super syrup-y and too sweet but this one tasted fresh and refreshing. Tanzie is located in a residential area in Berkeley and I was lucky to find parking in front of a house right across. They don't take reservations and it was busy for a Sunday of course. Since it's a really small restaurant the host had to great us outside to put us on the waitlist, which was about 30 mins for inside, or immediate seating for outside. They don't have heat lamps but they offer blankets. It was a cold morning so we wanted to sit inside. Luckily, our table was ready in 15 mins. Inside was small, cute, and cozy... with a fireplace! What we ordered: -Nam Too Hu (warm soy milk) Perfect amount of sweetness 7/10 -Hokkaido scallop egg scramble (I don't remember the name) 9/10 Surprised the amount of scallops, it was in every bite! Would taste better if seared before scrambling with eggs - Nam Prik Kha (slow cooked beef shank) 10/10 The spicy paste that was on the beef shank was what made the dish since the beef didn't really have any flavor to it and the eggs over the rice was silky. - Khanom Krok (coconut cakes) 10/10 Although this was under the appetizer, we had it for dessert because it's sweet! I had the organic chicken entree and my wife had the beef shank entree. I ordered the Iced strawberry matcha and my wife had the peach one. We both agree that the peach one was THE best. Although the strawberry one was a definite runner up. For appetizers, we had the beinget and I forget the name of it m. But it had grapefruit and blood oranges in it (Def a bit too spicy for my palate). Our food came out hot, plated well and delicious. We throughly enjoyed our food as we tried one another's. This is the second time I've been here, and there's always a wait. This time my party of 2 arrived at 1:40 pm on a Friday and had a 15-20 minute wait estimate, which proved out. We were seated inside the restaurant facing the window to the street, which meant it was a bit hot because the sun was shining in. I got the scallop special, which had Hokkaido scallop with fried garlic crisps, white rice, and their signature lava egg. Those first few bites were amazing because the scallop and egg were so fluffy. The scallops were flavorful, and the crispy garlic added crunchy texture to balance out the dish. However, the rice was less fluffy in the middle, and another area of improvement were the garlic skins, which weren't crispy enough to bite through. Most, if not all, were tough to bite through and unpleasant to eat. During the meal, there was a bug that flew at us a couple of times, which was a little annoying, but not the worst. I'm not sure if this was because we were close to the door. Overall, I love that they use all reusable foodware (even the napkins!), and the food is great, especially the lava egg. As such, I understand why so many people come. However, given how busy they are, I recommend coming during off times to minimize your wait. I wish I had better things to say because I love supporting Asian owned businesses, but Tanzie's was good--not great--but good. There's both outdoor and indoor seating available, and the vibes are immaculate. Me and my friend got brunch, and the two dishes we got (lava eggs and chicken sausage (SAI OUA 24) and pork jowl) were good, but the portion sizes left a lot to be desired.
