The restaurant space is quite small so I wouldn't recommend coming with a very large group. Also with their popularity, be prepared to wait (to be seated and for food)! I went not long after them being written about in sf chronicle, so there's a chance they were inundated and weren't prepared to handle that many guests, but we waited quite a long time to be served (like 40 or so minutes after ordering). Hopefully they're much more used to it now and the service is faster! Food wise everything is fresh and delicious. Their lava eggs are top notch but it is on a huge pile of plain white rice. I think I would prefer a little more flavor in the rice. My favorite was definitely the khanom krok, they were such yummy little bites. It was also fun to try the different toppings and how it would change the flavor profile with the coconut cake. read more

Really a masterclass...in extremely mediocre food. The hype and praise behind this place makes me feel like it's an inside joke that I'm not privy to. Like are we really putting this place on any so-called "reputable" publication's top 10 list just for having tornado scrambled eggs? In all seriousness, if you couldn't tell, our meal at Tanzie's was pretty underwhelming. For our mains, we had their grilled pork jowl, jin nung nam prik kha, and a sizzling skillet. All of which fell completely short for our entire group. The dishes were either too dry, too salty, or just flat out lacked flavor. They don't seem like terribly complex dishes, so not really sure where the poor execution is coming from. The dissatisfaction extended to their makrut strawberry matcha and Thai beignets. The makrut matcha seemed like an afterthought, tasting like other run-of-the-mill strawberry matcha and the beignets were no different than a Chinese donut or youtiao, except a lot more expensive. What I will say is that you can tell they poured a lot of effort into the design and theme of their interior. It just would've been nice if they put that same level of effort into their food as well. read more

We came to Tanzie's around 11 AM on a Sunday and waited about 30 minutes to be seated. Our party of six was seated in the community room on the right. For drinks, we ordered the strawberry makrut matcha, orange matcha, and jasmine thai tea. I wouldn't recommend any of them since the drink had more than 50% ice and were all very watered down. As for the food, we tried the lava eggs + grilled pork jowl and the jasmine thai tea acai bowl. I wouldn't recommend the acai bowl. The fruit was sour, and the overall flavor wasn't what I expected. A delicious brunch in a cute and cozy space! The owner Tanzie brings flavors from Chiang Mai into their vibrant menu of Thai specialties, rice dishes, and more. My friend and I started with the jasmine thai tea chia bowl which is topped with so many delicious tropical fruits, granola, coconut shreds, and a strawberry syrup. The chia pudding itself is made with green thai tea and very jasmine floral-forward. The lava egg is an absolute must get. This scrambled egg is on a whole other level. It's perfectly jammy and buttery that will make you want it in each bite. I opted for the grilled pork jowl, which I've never seen outside of a kbbq menu, let alone a brunch menu. It's similar pork belly but not as fatty and chewy. It's also tossed in crispy fried garlic! This dish is now in my list of greatest brunch meals of all time. Tldr: Overall good flavor profile but some room for improvement for the price point We ordered the soy milk, fresh squeezed blood orange juice ($7), khanom krok (coconut cakes; $14), thai beignets ($8), and the grilled pork jowl ($22). The soy milk was nice and warm (it had some toppings that I'm probably not culturally involved enough to enjoy) and the blood orange juice did feel really fresh. Khanom krok was super interesting and enjoyable but we wished each of the toppings added a little more than they currently did as other than the chive one the toppings sort of had a subtle effect on flavor and seemed like they were mostly there for texture. They sort of reminded me of a coconutty version of this pastry in Korea they sell on the street called "deli manju." The thai beignets are fried dough that you dip in condensed milk. They're better hot so I sort of wish they were listed under dessert so they can come out at the end of the meal. Lastly, the grilled pork jowl seemed slightly overcooked as there were parts of the meat that were sort of burnt. Additionally, the garlic chips, while they looked nice and golden, also had a slightly burnt bitter taste to them as well. There were also some wilty cilantro on top. The egg was nice and fluffy so it felt like when done right this would be a good filling brunch dish. It's a pretty small spot and fills up quick. We were a party of 7 with a stroller and luckily, they have a small private dining area in the back to accommodate. Otherwise, the rest of the restaurant is small and at most a 3 seater table. They no longer have access to the outdoor patio seating because Homestyle reopened. Parking can be challenging and is mostly in residential area. Staff was friendly and prompt. Dishes were pricey, like $25+. The mango matcha was yummy! Not too sweet and refreshing. The other girls who ordered regular matcha, needed to ask for some simple syrup to make it sweeter. I've been here several times now! This past time I went with a group of friend for lunch on a Saturday. We got there are 11:15am and there was an hour wait. Chiang Mai but in Berkeley? This place is a real gem located at Dwight and Sacramento st. Super cute inside with drinks to die for. Place is so beautiful inside. We had a six top and got a Ube latte, orange matcha latte, and a mango matcha latte. All were great but the ube was great. We got the coconut starters, not sure really how to explain it but like a warm coconut sweet treat. Get them, so unique and delicious. My friends and I stopped by Tanzie's on a Sunday at 11:30 a.m. and it took about 45 minutes for our large group of 6 to be seated. If you're dining in a group, you'll definitely have long wait times as there's only one large table in the restaurant for six and another large table for four. However, if you're only stopping by as a couple, wait times didn't seem to be that bad. Once we were seated however, service and food were very prompt. Our table shared two orders of the coconut bites and beignets. While everyone really enjoyed the coconut bites, each topped with a different topping (yam, corn, scallion, purple yam, and sesame seeds), we thought the beignets were pretty unremarkable and desperately needed the condensed milk to be enjoyable. For our mains, my wife ordered the lava eggs with the pork Thai sausage while I ordered the chai bowl with fruit. I loved how fluffy the soft scrambled eggs were and really enjoyed all the herbs and spices packed into the sausage. The sausage is a little spicy but is perfectly tolerable with the rice. If you're stuck on which protein to order, I would highly recommend trying out the sausage. The chia bowl doesn't look like a ton of food but I was surprisingly pretty satisfied after finishing the whole bowl. Some fruits were more ripe than others, but I really enjoyed the variety in every bite. The honey soaked granola and toasted coconut flakes provided a nice crunchy texture to contrast the chia seeds underneath. Overall, I had a pretty good meal at Tanzie's! Last thing I wanted to note is to consider inquiring about the price of their specials before placing your order for it. Our waitress advertised the Dungeness crab as the special protein they were seasonally offering for the lava eggs, but we weren't informed it was $40 compared to the other proteins which were closer to $25. I had the Sai Oua with Chicken and he had the Nam Prik Ong both with White Rice. The eggs were wonderful--buttery, light, and so fluffy! My Sai Oua was heavy on lemongrass, savory, herby, and spicy. I have such a low spice tolerance so the one chili pepper did me in! My companion's dish was good and tomatoey. I will say his was super spicy, it had two peppers but for me, one bite was enough. The food was good but spicy so being we both have a lower tolerance, I don't think we'll come back anytime soon oops. When the time comes, I am curious about their other items! I will be thinking about this dish for the rest of the week, I assure you. We came right at opening on a Sunday and the restaurant filled up pretty fast. The outdoor seating is limited to about 4 small tables. The outdoor covered patio belongs to the restaurant next door so don't expect it to be covered. I would agree with most of the Yelp reviews in that you should come before 9 am to be seated promptly. The food is fantastic all around. I have no notes. Great little Thai brunch spot, the inside is quite small so expect getting cozy with the other patrons, unless it's a beautiful day like today and you get to enjoy outside seating in their select tables right outside their front door. We had our dog Maple with us, so it was perfect. They brought her out a water, that was very kind. The service here is nice and friendly. The Nam Tao Hu was a soothing, warm, lovely drink that is described very well as "mom's hug" This menu has all meat (strong focus on piggies) so I only had one choice which was the Vegan lava eggs (Just Egg with mushrooms). It was delicious but too salty for me, so I couldn't finish it. Took it home so that I could add more rice to it to cut the saltiness a bit. My husband ordered the crab special which he enjoyed. The Khanom Krok was a beautifully presented sweet, delightful, small plate that helped balance my salty dish. The beignets were fantastic, I definitely recommend as the cherry on top to end your meal :) read more

What an incredible brunch experience at Tanzie's. Came in for brunch at Tanzie's, which is walk-in only, and now I totally get why my friend swears by this place. The flavors in every dish and drink were authentic, bold, and absolutely delicious. We ordered the lava eggs with sai oua and a side of pork jowl--everything was incredible. The eggs were soft and delicate, the sausage was packed with rich, aromatic spices, and the pork jowl was easily my favorite--cooked to perfection with amazing texture and flavor. We also got the Thai beignets, which were light, crispy, and paired perfectly with the sweet condensed milk dipping sauce. The drinks were just as impressive--beautifully presented, unique, and delicious. Every detail here is clearly crafted with care. I can totally see why my friend brings visitors here. What an adorable spot nestled in Berkeley off Dwight Way, with cozy indoor/outdoor seating (fyi, indoor has window seating if snagging a seat for one and there's a little fireplace). I absolutely love it here and wonder what this location was potentially before? For our honeymoon we traveled to Chiang Mai in Thailand and Tanzie's is inspired by cuisine from this region ~ to say this place was one of the most special locations we've ever been in our life is an understatement, so I was happy with the opportunity to brunch here. Our server was so sweet and helped guide us through the menu ~ we ordered the most delicious iced mango matcha and iced strawberry makrut matcha (also available in an orange, so yummy). They were beautiful and gone too fast! Next were the Khanom Krok (coconut cakes) that resemble a sliced egg with toppings including sweet corn, green onion, and yam. The perfect hybrid of sweet and savory. For the mains I tried the Sai Oua ~ pork or chicken Chiang Mai style sausage with lava eggs over choice of brown/white rice and what I believed to be a chili paste. Honestly..heavenly. The eggs were soft scrambled and resembled a rose bud. Glorious all around! Looks like Tanzie's may be closed on specific days, while offering brunch and now dinner on specific days as well, so def check the hours. Excited to come back and try the dinner menu, intrigued on what items are offered. My family and I had breakfast at Tanzie's. It was a wonderful oasis with smooth exceptional service. The menu was explained along with suggestions of most popular dishes. We ordered rice cakes and yogurt granola bowl for the table and each got lava eggs with varied meats, grilled pork jowl, Chiang Mai pork sausage and the special with beautiful grilled filet medallion and shrimp. Everything was exceptional. The Khanom Krokhad a delightful creamy consistency with toppings that added texture. My favorite was lava eggs. These are cooked exactly the way I love them, soft but with not a bite of uncooked white. (The horror!!!). I had a taste of everything but it would have been hard to pick a favorite. As we were leaving, I commented on the donuts a neighboring guest had AND she offered all a taste. I was forward enough to accept the offer. Next time. Be prepared for the check but definitely go.
