In the Chesterton area I would say that this is Chinese at its best, not to say it is the best Chinese I have ever had but locally this is as good as it gets. Everything on the menu is pretty good and reasonably priced. They also have some Korean and Thai dishes. I really love the Kimchi! I have had the other Chinese venues in Chesterton and when they started up they outshined Tao Chen's but then they lowered quality. Tao Chen's is delicious and consistent! read more

This place is fantastic. The food is delicious, wait time was fast (especially on a Saturday night), and prices are reasonable. They offer foods from all over Asia, not just China. We had the chicken fried rice, egg rolls, and tempura shrimp. I ordered 2 egg rolls so my wife and I could each have one, but she had eaten both of them before our son and I had returned from the pool. She said it was so good that she couldn't stop herself. She knows egg rolls, so that means something. They came with an orange sauce, which I'm guessing is duck sauce. She loved it. She left me the tempura shrimp, which were perfect. They tasted like they came from an expensive Japanese restaurant and the serving was surprisingly generous. They came with teriyaki dipping sauce, and I inhaled them. I've had a LOT of fried rice in my life, and this was some of the most delicious. The rice was brown (not that yellow garbage) and just the right amount of greasy. They put sprouts in the rice, which adds some crunch to the texture. When I called to order the food, the woman was very helpful. I asked about the difference between the regular fried rice and the Thai fried rice, and she listed all of the ingredients of each. But the waitress just ignored us and I came with a group of eight people and, from opportunity enterprises here in Valpo Hi call the next morning to address my concerns, and all they would do to compensate me was two free eggrolls. and The egg roll I got with my meal was cold and had to wait for the egg roll 45 mintunes after I ordered mine. I'm updating my previous review, because I just visited for the first time in a couple years. Still amazing! People need to know, this is the BEST Chinese restaurant. Nothing in Chicago has even compared. In my last review I've said I never found twice cooked pork anywhere else. That's changed, I've actually had several and they're quite different, more of a traditional northern Chinese method. While very good, the twice cooked pork at Tao Chen's is just still the standard for me! Less greasy, less fatty, much better flavor. I've probably been here upwards of 50 times throughout my life. When I was a kid I moved to Chesterton and hated it. There was nothing interesting there and I had no friends. Tao Chen's is the only fond memory I have from there. Food just ok. Ordered take out and while picking up the hostess giving us our food had it all stapled in paper bags, then in plastic. We went over the order and she verified it was all in there. Hmmmmm. Well needless to say when we got back to the house, 20 min away and opened the bags we were disappointed. We ordered take out for 8 and no rice at all. Really? No rice? I've been coming to Tao Chen's with my family for over a decade now when I come home to visit my parents and I love this place. The food is really quite good, even by my spoiled standards as someone who has lived in the Bay Area. Try the potstickers, fried rice, kung pao broccoli, or Hong Sue dishes--yum! And the staff is really sweet, especially when we come in with my toddler and they make a fuss over her. Looking forward to many more great family meals at Tao Chen's! read more

Was very disappointed with this place. I ordered pick up, sweet and sour chicken lunch special with fried rice and an order of fried chicken wings. The "fried" rice was bland, no flavor at all, just seemed steamed, dry rice with a little color and a few bits of egg. The sweet and sour chicken was hard, drenched in a honey thick sauce that was not good. The fried chicken wings were lightly breaded but also had no flavor, about 6 wings for $6.55. Not worth your money. I have a big open mind about food and will eat just about anything but this place was not good. Would not return. read more

I simply love Tau Chen's. My wife and I are both vegetarians and find a bunch of stuff here that we love. We talk the place up a lot to friends and family and no one has ever been let down. Spicy tofu, vege egg rolls, and vegetarian Dan Dan noodles are some of my favorites. Honestly - while eating in China Town in San Francisco I sat there wishing it was as good as Tao Chens. Horrible service and food! When my family (7 of us) walked in we were told to wait so they could make a phone call. That should have been our first clue to walk out. We waited and were finally seated. We ordered quite a bit of food well over $100 and it was brought dish by dish so some of us "ate" and others waited. It took FOREVER and the food was horrible and under cooked. Who serves flour tortillas and calls them pancakes with moo shu??? When we went to pay the bill we were honest and received no compensation or apology. When we all got up to leave my mom and I hung back and reiterated our lack of enjoyment and again no compensation or apology. I actually gave them our entire order back that we packed up ourselves. I was just going to throw it away anyway. I HATE wasting food when so many people go hungry but I wouldn't have even offered it to the devil himself. There was only 1 other couple in the restaurant and the phone was very quiet so they weren't busy. This service was unacceptable and uncalled for. What a horrible place! Do yourself a huge favor, go to the grocery store's frozen food isle to find Chinese/Asian food it will taste better and most certainly you will receive better service. read more

I will preface this review with the fact that I have been going to the Chinese joint in this spot for 25 years now and I've always loved it! Typically we call in an order for the family and go pick it up. The employees are cordial and always have the order done on time. My menu favorite is the egg rolls and chicken fried rice. I am really shocked by the high reviews. Then i remind myself, im in indiana, and maybe people dont have much experience with what authentic chinese food is supposed to taste like. I grew up in a chinese american community and was beyond disappointed by the food here. I was the only person in the restaurant, yet it took 20 minutes for me to get my noodle soup. It does not take 20 minutes to put beef ball in a bowl of hot soup broth. What made me mad was the noodle soup was pathetic. I definitely got tasteless, bland top ramen vibes, not slow cooked, flavorpacked broth that you find in any good Asian restaurant. Food was good but definitely overpriced. The restaurant looks nice, clean, with pretty menus. But i would trade all that for simplicity and FLAVORFUL food. I wouldn t go out of my way for this place but it's closer than my favorite SEVEN TREASURES- simple, cheap, but food tastes amazing there. In conclusion: Save your money and time and just go to seven treasures in Chinatown. This place will leave you full, but unhappy you paid for trash. read more

Our first time at Tao Chen's and I do believe we will return! We were promptly greeted and seated. I had already checked the menu at home so I knew what I was going to order. Shrimp Lo Mein and vegetable eggs rolls for me. House fried rice for hubby. I was so pleased with the Egg Drop Soup....steaming hot and so full of flavor!! My lunch portion of Shrimp Lo Mein was way too much for me to eat so I brought at least half home. It was tasty! Same with hubby's fried rice! He said it was good. Usually we have a very positive experience here. Our food tonight was very good. I had the house pad Thai, my companion had the beef and broccoli. Both were tasty. It just took quite a long time for service tonight. Not sure what was going on...someone called in sick, kitchen equipment down, who knows. Either way it was just too long for food. We asked for a take out order for when we leave and it took more than 80 minutes from when we ordered it. always love this place. the last 2 times we've been there, the food was excellent. yesterday, not so much. Vietnamese spring rolls were just full of noodles & a couple tiny pieces of chicken - no veggies at all. quite flavorless! the beef thai lettuce wraps were very tasty but the huge iceberg lettuce pieces were not pliable enough to eat without breaking apart. spicy lemongrass beef had a few pieces of beef & tons of red & green peppers, onions & canned bean sprouts. disappointment. the always-great house chow fun was also a disappointment. usually had a slight crisp to the noodles, great flavor & tons of meat. not this time. lacked it all. everyone has a bad nite. hopefully, it's not consistent. will definitely give them another chance & hope for the best......again. read more

Typical mediocre Chinese food; iffy cleanliness. The owners are often crabby, especially if you dare to ask for sauce for your carryout. (You can have all the sauce you want if you eat in.) That said, if you're craving Chinese and don't mind paying an extra $3 for sauce (plus begging -- just paying for it is often not enough), it can hit the spot. Good crab rangoon. We used to eat at here before the incident. I miss the ambience, seems like a really nice place with friendly staff and good tasting food. But after the emergency room visit (years ago), from halfway swallowing a sharp chunk of steel wool Brillo pad that was in the soup... And then returning a year later to give it a second chance, and they were understaffed and the dishwasher was doing the cooking. We decided to stick with the Chinese restaurant across the parking lot over by the DQ which quite frankly has much better and more affordable food anyways. read more

My entire family got sick from eating here. We won't be back. Place has really went downhill with the new owners.

I googled them and decided to check them out. I ordered chicken with broccoli. It came with white rice or plain fried rice. I asked them if I could have pork fried rice instead and pay the difference and they said no we don't substitute here. Really?? I can pay the the difference, again no. The chicken and broccoli was good but as usual they give you a ton more of vegetables than meat. The plain fried rice I got was awful! Extremely dry and undercooked. Chinese food can be expensive for a family to buy so I expect it to be at its best. Because of this I will never eat here again. I will try Happy Wok next door next time so be looking for my review soon, Bye Bye! read more
