Absolutely love Tao Fresh!! They have a QR code at every table that allows you to view and order on your phone. You no longer have to wait for a server to come and order at your own leisure. When you're done, just pay at the counter! Their sizzling plates are so delicious and I love that the seasonings are customizable to your own liking. I always get the beef udon that comes with garlic butter but I believe all the other plates comes with it as well. The name kinda reminded me of Meet Fresh so I initially thought it was a dessert spot but it turned out to be a great place for lunch!   We ordered the spicy chicken entree and beef rice w/ fried egg & garlic butter, French fries and creme brûlée boba milk tea. The portions were great, and tasted delicious! Make sure to cook the beef before you mix it with the rice! It's super easy to do, just mix the meat with the egg and garlic butter around the edge of the hot plate. If you keep stirring it around it cooks within a minute. I also recommend adding a splash of garlic sauce on top for an extra kick of flavor. We were seated right away and the QR code on the table made it easy to look at the menu and order directly online.  The service was super attentive! I accidentally broke the cap of my drink b/c I tried to put the straw through the wrong portion of the cap so some broken plastic pieces got in my drink. I didn't even say anything but our server heard the "pop"  from when the plastic broke and she came right away and replaced it with a new boba drink.  The table for two was a little small but it was workable. What we ordered fit perfectly on the table but if we ordered anymore I don't think it would've fit. Don't sleep on this one. I've always passed by this place numerous times after the gym. Always looked at the Yelp reviews and pictures outside of the restaurant. Clean and well lit atmosphere inside with a bunch of seating and booths. The service isn't the best, as you have to scan a QR code at the table. As a first timer like me, I sometimes like to ask questions about the menu. The food I ordered was the sizzling ribeye and salmon. Man oh man was this good. Another reason I got this was because of the protein and veggies , and very to minimal carbs. The dish was full of flavor and did not disappoint. I'm happy i found this gem. They also have an Hawaiian bbq menu also. I'd say this is a better version of your local Hawaiian bbq. I went back a few days later and took my family with me. They enjoyed it as well. I'll admit, there aren't that many places open late at night in the Bay Area, so there isn't that much competition, but even if this place did have stiff competition, it would do very well for itself! So good service! Food isn't too expensive. A big part of the menu is pretty filling stuff like sizzling plates of rice/noodles with curry, beef, and other fun stuff on it. Common setup at a lot of those Japanese hamburger restaurants like Sizzling Lunch or Pepper Lunch. The pricing is more than fair on these by Bay Area standards - you get a lot! The other part of the menu is Hawaiian plates. They're weird things to combine, but they also do a really good job with these. You can order all the typical Hawaiian plate items - and you can customize your order. I for example ordered no rice, triple macaroni salad (average rice fan vs. average mac salad enjoyer). Yummy mac salad. I had the spicy chicken, which wasn't actually really spicy at all, but it was still very flavorful and tasty. Finally, they have a nice selection of alcohols as is befitting a place people often stop late night at. Reasonably priced too, especially for the amount of food you get (spoiler: it's a lot). Updated review for the Hawaii style rice plates takeout. $36 after taxes so a little less than $20 per person which is a bit hard to come by these days (non fast food or bakery). Full portion with loaded carbs. There's an option to choose all rice or Mac, or 2 scoops X and 1 Y. That's a pretty good option to have when you're indecisive. The fried chicken was still very crispy after about 10 mins in car ride and another 10 at home when I needed to do something else. That's a win! We sat for a while with no menu, no water, and no guidance. Eventually, we realized we had to order through a QR code on our own. Meanwhile, we saw other tables being served water and handed menus, which made the inconsistency even more frustrating. When the food arrived, it wasn't cooked well and didn't taste fresh. The entire time, no one checked on us or offered any service -- we honestly had no idea who our server was. At checkout, we were surprised to find that even during lunch, the system required a minimum 15% tip. When we tried to select less, it displayed a message to "call a server." When we came over the server , she told us we had to tip at least 15%, (despite receiving no service at all).That felt unreasonable and uncomfortable, especially for a self-service lunch. Overall, the visit felt unorganized and unwelcoming from start to finish. The food wasn't worth the price, and the mandatory tipping policy made it worse. Tao's Fresh takes over the old Cham Sae Bistro location in Newark. I thought I had reviewed this, but it might have been under Cham Sae Bistro. The changeover is complete with their name on top of the building. The staff were friendly and hospitable as I took a seat. I wish I could give Taos Fresh a 4.5/5 stars because I really did love it but this isn't necessarily a place I definitely want to come back to as there wasn't too much unique about the place other than the gimmick of the sizzling plates. Walking in the door I wasn't sure if it was going to be a sit down and order or order at the front then grab a table but a staff member came up and quickly told us we could just grab any table. Once we sat, we found the QR code to order on the table corners. Quick note that the music was a vibe. They were playing common pop songs in a reggae style, including some Adele songs, Dua Lipa songs, and Despacito. Not sure if it was my favorite, but it was a fun conversation topic. The Food: My boyfriend and I ordered the salmon and beef rice sizzling plate and the kimchi beef rice sizzling plate. They were both so good. Great flavor! I know kimchi is usually spicy but I've generally lucked out with getting very mild kimchi so I was a little surprised to find there was a slight kick to it. The dish was also very temperature hot as it's still cooking when they give it to you, which adds to the enjoyment of the meal. I wish I added the sauces sooner and waited longer to eat the meal. Once the food cooled down I could finally appreciate the flavors. That's just a skill issue on my part as I walked in already hungry. We also ordered two teas: the strawberry matcha latte with boba and the strawberry lychee jelly fruit tea. Both were amazing. This is my 2nd time visiting this location I also tried the Golden Eel sizzling rice and a fruit tea last time I was here (both were really good and filling). You can keep adding more to your order and food will be sent out once it's ready, but I love the convenience of also being able to pay from your table once you're ready to go. They have condiment bottles and seasonings for you as well . Each of them pair really well with their food so try them to your hearts content, I like to add some as I go and mix up each of my bites. Both times I've found the service to be very nice and courteous and the inside has been super clean. Of course in a rush they may have some tables that need attending, but they make sure new parties are coming in have a table ready for them ASAP.
