imagine you have been driving for a couple hours, you're hungry , have a headache & you get a tip that this is the place to eat. You walk in & they were nice enough, just the service could've been better. Once again we came here on a recommendation of places to eat here in chicago & i wish we wouldn't have listened. They accommodated our big group but they weren't a equipped to handle our orders. They forgot multiple entrees and served all of us at different times. despite all of this we were still fairly optimistic only to be devastatingly wrong. The menudo had no flavor, the quesadilla was literally just grease with the side of tortilla & cheese. (The photo of the quesadilla was after using around 20 of their flimsy napkins.) The tacos were bland & no amount of toppings & condiments could hide the fact that everything here is just grease meat. The horchata was good tho:)! They have an open kitchen in the front so you can watch them cook the horrendous food they are about to serve you. I have been to all the Los Gallos locations in the city, and this one is no different. They have all been consistent in service and consistent with their food. This location is probably the most spacious, was luckily was able to grab a seat right away. They have great customer service and quickly came to our table to take our order without giving us menus. It's like they knew! They knew we wouldn't have needed a menu, and we quickly put our order in for two large "Carne en su Jugo" entrees. The Carne en su Jugo is definitely one of the best dishes you can order once the temperature starts dropping. A very flavorful broth with the carne being cooked in its own juices and served with pinto beans, bacon, cebolla, cilantro radishes and avocado. They use skirt steak for the meat and but plenty of carne in this caldo. This dish is so flavorful and addicting to eat. It is also served with warm tortillas which makes for a very filling dish. You're free to try whatever you like, but I'd you leave this place without trying their Carne en Su Jugo, you're definitely missing out. This is a must try and you'll thank me later. Los Gallos is not what it used to be...my 16.00 plate of carne en su jugo literally was old chopped up fat of the steak, the serving was small. So we were pretty hungry when we arrived here, so I hope I'm not biased, but I'd have to say I had a five-star experience here and left extremely satisfied with a smile on my face and wanting to come back. I had the al pastor taco, tripas taco, tostada de ceviche, steak quesadilla grande, ands small horchata. Tacos were really good. Al Pastor was great and the tripas were a good crispiness and saltiness. Decent amount of meat in the tacos too. The tostada de ceviche (paid the extra 75 cents for avocado on top) was great as well and remained crispy even after I let it sit after a while, but the avocados were a bit meager compared to other places I've had this .. 4 pretty thin pieces..not sure if it was worth the extra cost. I would get these three all again. To my disappointment, the steak quesadilla wasn't as great as I imagine it would be. Just average, may not get this again here, but it didn't really lower my five star experience since we had so much food to eat. Horchata was excellent and a great price for a small cup. Ask for less ice to get some more horchata. Wish we got a large but it was good enough. Unfortunately I didn't read the reviews until after we ordered...after I looked around and saw every single table around us eating soup!! I asked the waiter about this. He said it's their main dish. Great gem we found while going to the recent Mexican festival. The tostada was very tasty, got it with al pastor. I usually don't like tostadas since the breads too thick, but it looked so good and tasted as good as it looked with soft but slightly crispy bread and generous portions of meat and avocado. The chorizo taco was also very good, though a little on saltier side. Horchata is a must-order and reasonably priced. Finally, the steak quesadilla was delicious with stringy cheese and juicy steak pieces- though wish there was slightly more meat to match the meat quantity in all the other food items (can't tell I like my meat?). I chose the "underground" Chicago institution: Taquiera Los Gallos (the original location). Have you heard of "carne en su jugo?" I had that today for lunch. What did that taste like? You would need to stay with me for the following paragraphs... Before heading to Los Gallos in Little Village on the commercial W. 26th. st., prepare for $30 worth of cash for two (2). Otherwise, there is an ATM onsite with $2.25 surcharge. The current market price for carne en su jugo is $10/bowl. I've seen some pictures on Yelp from the past six (6) months with the price listed on the menu for $9.25. Please be aware of such change. I guess we came here with God's plan. We found an unpaid street parking spot In FRONT OF the taqueria. They do have customer parking across the road. I promise I will get to the food, as you all are anticipating. I just want to make sure I've touched base, in case you're curious about the neighborhood and its surroundings. Ok, are you ready for this? Carne en su jugo literally means "meat in its juices." The soup is consisted of beef, bacon crumbs, radish, cebollita, parsley, avocado, beans, and lime on the side to adjust whatever acidity you want on your soup. Surprisingly, the soup itself wasn't heavy, yet it seemed to function like a comforting agent like a chicken soup, as you would have it when feeling under the weather. In conclusion, I would definitely recommend carne en su jugo, before going to see a doctor in order to save yourself some unnecessary medical bills. They didn't skimp on meat. Personally, I felt $10/bowl was on a higher side. If you buy bulk to take home, I think it's a better deal since you can purchase a large tub from the cashier for $44. They provide the size specifications so you know the volume in each choice of containers. We also had small horchata and limonada. The beverages were decent. The service was adequate. If you choose to dine in, then take a seat. For to-go or phone order, please proceed to the cashier, pay, and take a seat at the waiting room. Yes, they have many chairs in the waiting room. They are busy like queen bees on the weekend, so the best time to come is the during the weekday afternoon, when most adults and kids are still at their work places and in schools. read more

In December I went to Puerto Vallarta and had THE BEST Carne en su Jugo. I was on a mission to find a place that could closely resemble my new found favorite soup. Unfortunately, this was not it. Their Carne en su Jugo was very basic with little flavor. The tacos were around the same, basic, not much flavor. The place in itself was a little confusing as well. Wasn't sure if we were to order at the front or sit. We were told to sit and we waited a bit for a waitress. Carnes en su Jugo are the speciality here and they are really the best in the city. It's a stu that contains steak, beans, and bacon! What else can you ask for? I have been coming here since I was a child and I probably bring my kids when I become a parent. I usually come on Sunday's and have learned that it's best when going later in the day. Sunday mornings are completely packed and there is usually a wait. This is the only reason that I'm giving them a 4 instead of 5 stars. Ordered a gallon of Menudo which is a weekend only dish, the cost of this is $30.00. Which isn't cheap, I get home and find that i only have broth and hardly any meat. I decided to go back because that it just unacceptable, asked to speak to the person in charge and cashier just pointed to someone cooking in the kitchen, not one person was grabbing his attention, so I asked if I should go get him since no one else would. He came over asked what the problem was and said I didn't get any meat with my Menudo, he opened it and asked "How did I order it?" Why would I have to ask for meat, when you order it, you would assume that it has meat in it, at that point I didn't even want it anymore and asked for my money back. They did. Not one time did they apologize or try to make make the situation better. This is very disappointing because I have been going there for over 25 years and so has my family and friends, after this and how they handled it I have to say that my family and I will not be returning here. Never would I have expected that kind of treatment and service from this place that I've been going to for that long. Beware of anyone that goes here make sure you get what you pay for. It is so full of flavor and taste it hits every palet in your tongue so perfectly. I have been coming here for Soo many years. The meat is superb. I love their tacos. No meat in specific it's all done very well. Service is consistent. I've known the ladies there since I was a little girl and it is so nice to see them always. They only have coffee with cinnamon. There are now a couple of locations in the suburbs and City, but this one on 26th street is the first and place has been a local favorite for years. Just a couple of suggestions: this place is all about carne en su jugo, which is a Jalisco favorite. If you don't like soupiness of the jugo, try the Carne Apache--decent, and you get all the fixins. Also: BRING CASH. This place does not accept cards, but an ATM is on the premises. Lastly, free parking is across the street in a supervised lot: take advantage of it, since let's not even talk about the ridiculousness of Chicago street parking. One complaint: there has been a definite aguacate/avocado shortage on Los Gallos' dishes--I want my green slices a-plenty! read more
