Sometimes, the best taquerias are located at gas stations. That's the case with this taqueria, Taqueria Morelos, located at the Chevron on the corner of Atlanta and Austell Roads in Marietta. I'm not gonna lie -- this is a sketchy part of town, but the food inside is good. To give you a sense of the vibe, when we visited, the customers were mostly blue-collar. Taqueria Morelos has its own space, separate of Chevron's Food Mart. For a convenience store taqueria, the dining room is fairly spacious with several tables, a salsa bar, and TV. It's not much to look at. You order at the register. Drinks aren't self-serve, but eating utensils and napkins are. Both dine-in and takeout seemed popular during our visit. If you dine in, your meal is served on real plates as opposed to disposable dishware. The single-stall men's restroom was ehh... clean enough, but there weren't any paper towels or a hand dryer, so that was annoying. The menu is sizable. The regular menu is written completely in Spanish. The to-go menu is in English, but it doesn't have pricing. There's an extensive selection of tortas ($5-7 each), burritos ($5.25-6.00 each), gorditas ($4.50-5.00), tacos ($1.99-2.25 each), nachos ($10.00-11.50 for a full order, $7 for a half order), soups ($12 whole, $8 half), huaraches ($6.50-7.00 each), plates with a main, salad, rice, beans, and tortillas ($8.00-13.00 each for adults, $4.50 each for kids), chicken wings ($8 for a full order, $5.50 for a medium order), flautas ($8 per plate), enchiladas ($10.00-11.50 per plate), tostadas ($3.25-3.75 each), sincronizadas (similar to a quesadillas, $6.50-7.50 each), sopes ($6.50-7.25 for three or $2.75 for one), quesadillas ($3.50-4.00 each), apps and sides like guac ($4.50), cheese dip ($3.50), and fries, and desserts such as flan ($2.50-3.50 each). Beverage-wise, they offer aguas frescas (tamarindo, jamaica, horchata, and pina, $1.75 for a medium, $2.25 for a large), and sodas including Jarritos and Mexican coke ($2 each). No cerveza (beer). The restaurant offers up to 12-15 protein or vegetable options for your taco, burrito, quesadilla, etc. It's bigger than the typical Mexican restaurant selection. A few of the more interesting examples include hongos (mushrooms), nopales (cacti), and borrego (lamb). The lady who worked at the register spoke good English, so she was able to translate several items on the menu for me. Here's what I tried: Tacos ($1.99 each): * Pastor * Asada * Carnitas * Chorizo * Tinga Sopes ($2.75 each): * Suadero * Chorizo * Gordita nopales ($4.50) * Huarache deshebrada de res ($6.50) * Horchata (medium size, $1.75) In general, I thought the food and drink were delicious. I can see why this place is highly rated on Yelp. All of the ingredients were fresh and good quality and our orders came out quick. Credit card was accepted. All the tacos came on single-layer handmade (according to the menu) flour tortillas with white onion and cilantro. You have the option of corn tortillas too, but I'm not sure we specified. I'm pretty sure our tortillas were flour. I noticed the onion and cilantro on the tacos were chopped finer than the onion and cilantro I've had at most other taquerias. The taco meat fillings were generous and the meat quality was good. I was impressed. All of the meats were moist, flavorful, and appetizing. They were nicely cooked and seasoned. I can't say I preferred one over another; they were all tasty, even the tinga (chicken), and I rarely think chicken tacos are very good. The asada taco was one of the best I've had in recent memory. The sopes were piled high with meat, white cheese, tomato, and avocado. The masa base was thick and crisp. Yum. The sopes were consistent with the tacos. The ingredients were fresh and flavorful and the portions were generous. The suadero, which is a cut of meat from between a cow's belly and leg, was grilled, tender, and savory. The chorizo was exceptionally tasty. The gordita nopales was my least favorite item of the things we tried. It was kind of like a soft tortilla sandwich filled with thinly sliced cactus, melted cheese, and beans. It wasn't bad, but I would've preferred a meat filling. The cactus was cooked, soft, and sort of had the look and texture of soggy green beans. Not much flavor. The huarache deshebrada de res was huge. It took up an entire plate. It was almost like a sope on steroids. One huarache is enough food for one meal. Again, the kitchen was generous with the meat and toppings. In this case, the toppings were cheese, beans, and lettuce. Like the sopes, the huarache had a thick and yummy masa base. Deshebrada de res is shredded braised beef, similar to ropa vieja in Cuban cuisine. It was juicy and full of flavor, almost addictive. The horchata was excellent. It was cold and refreshing with the perfect amount of sweetness and consistency, not too chalky and not too watery. If it wasn't for the sub-par atmosphere, I probably would've given this place five stars. read more

I'd love to give this four stars, but every other bite of my Taco Pastor had gristle. :-( The flavor and crispness was great, but I couldn't get past having to get rid of the gristle...unlike any other Taco I've recently had (see other reviews). The Salsa Bar is unique in that it has Sour Creme and Charred Jalapeños on it. All the sauces were great, especially the Tomatillo. This place has become my go to spot for authentic Mexican tacos. I can't get enough! The prices are good and they have a variety of options like enchiladas and such but I usually stick to the tacos. And they don't skim on the meat either. My favorites are the barbacoa and steak. Flavorful and plentiful. And I usually pass on the sauces because the meat is flavored and grilled so well. I've had the burrito once before. It was good. Huge. Might've been bigger than Chipotle! And the rice and beans are pretty standard for your typical Mexican spot. They have a good amount of traffic coming in. The few times I've visited, I've waited 15-20 minutes max. And that's from placing my order to leaving. If you have someone with you that's fluent in Spanish, it helps a lot. read more

Taqueria Morelos is named after the State in Mexico. So I guess these are tacos from the Morelos region? One thing for sure, they have a huge menu. They had so much crap, I had hard time deciding. Not only that, they have some interesting fillings I haven't seen in another Mexican restaurant like suadero (fried beef chunks), nopales (cactus), hongos (mushrooms), and tinga (shredded chicken cooked in chipotle tomato sauce). Their menu is mostly in Spanish. They do have an English menu somewhere. Ask the nice lady and she'll give you one. I tried their tacos, huraches, gorditas, and sopes. They were all delicious. Their tacos were one of the better authentic, Mexican tacos I've tasted. I tried their tacos al pastor and tinga. They stuffed the tacos full of meat. It came with cilantros and onions. And you can dress them up at the salsa bar. The salsa bar consisted of avocado, pico, peppers, limes, and cactus. So if you don't order cactus, you can try the cold, salsa version at the bar. The Taco Al Pastor was great. The corn tortilla was cooked well. The pastor had great flavor to it. The Tinga was good too. I loved the flavor. The Huraches looked gigantic. It was a size of a dinner plate. It came with the meat, beans, lettuce, and cheese on top of a huge masa base. It is a meal onto itself. I liked it as well. The masa base was a bit hard, I guess to hold the enormous toppings. It was basically a pizza. The Gordita was huge too. I got the Nopales Gordita. The cactus seemed cooked in some spices and was tender. I liked the texture and the flavor. The corn tortilla it came in was great too. I also tried their Horchata. You can order medium or large. They also give you free refills. It tasted excellent. It had that nice, sweet, rice flavor with vanilla and cinnamon. Despite being inside a Chevron gas station, it is one of the better Taquerias I've had in Atlanta. The woman who works there is sweet. And everything tasted good. read more

Local to the restaurant and just haven't tried it until now. It seems as though I have been missing some good food incredibly close by. I would vote the food as 4 stars but they get bumped to a five for being very helpful and communicative. My online order included something they ran out of, and they called me, more than once, to be sure I got what I wanted. I hate to say that is an extra mile, but I have been in the same situation with other restaurants and they chose less patron friendly solutions. The food was fresh and good. They have a very thorough menu but didn't include that queso fresco is on almost everything. I should have chosen to tell them "no cheese" but didn't. The surprise of the food was definitely the nopales on the taco. Really good! My recommendation to you? Explore! I know will be exploring here again for sure. read more

TACOS BARBACOA For $1.50, it's worth it. The tacos are huge and stuffed with delicious barbacoa, onions and cilantro. The barbacoa is probably one of the best meats to get here. SOPAS These are so good. The masa cakes at the bottom are fried and crunchy, the perfect texture for holding a bunch of delicious meats, lettuce, cheese, tomatoes and avocadoes. We got them with carne asada as per recommendation by the waitress, and she was right. It's so good. GORDITAS NOPALES The Gorditas are handmade and super good. The nopales is so flavorful and fresh. I would get this Gordita next time again! GORDITAS AL PASTOR Not my favorite meat. I didn't finish it. The al pastor is a bit dry although flavorful. It doesn't stand a chance against the carne asada and barbacoa. SALSA BAR Is super fresh and yummy. I think the salsas are house made as well. read more

Legit Mexican spot! Since I arrived in GA I have been looking for a legit Authentic Mexican spot. This place delivers!!! Their tacos are killer! The salsa bar is great with the difference sauces, and the food is tasty. Forgot the chain mexican spots. They have fresh tortillas!! I have the Carne Asada burrito and it was tasty... Their tacos are where it is at thou... Will be back to try more things off the menu for sure!!! Little unknown spot attached to a gas station... Their lamb soup is divine!!! the wifey has the barbacoa flautas which were full of flavor and tasty.. nice and crunchy as they are supposed to be. I always love finding authentic, hole in the wall Mexican restaurants. This place is pretty bare bones, but the food is legit, and cheap. It's not in the best location, but it's great for lunch given its proximity to my work. Excellent tacos and Salsa bar. My only complaint is the loud Hispanic soap operas always blaring at full volume. I think they could use more staff as well; the same lady is always working at the register and always looks overworked and in need of help. read more
