Wow I really like this place! Strong "good food at the music festival" vibe. Hippies cooking well, this is absolutely not a back handed compliment. I really liked the pinto beans, whole beans are always a big plus in my book, whole pintos or black beans are absolutely a staple of any self respecting taco purveyor around Austin, Tx. and its always gratifying to have that outside of Texas. One word of caution, their salsas which I think are quite good judging from what I got, would skew towards really quite hot. I noticed while ordering that their *hot* uses Ghost Peppers, so I opted for the medium and even that was, while not challengingly spicy, was most definitely hot enough. I enjoyed this place! Probably one of the closest to authentic street tacos you can get in southern Illinois! However, I'm not sure I'd consider it Mexican food. Sauces were different, and different than authentic Mexican food that I've had, but I still think the dressed the steak fajitas and tacos well! We got our food very quick! Love this place! Great tacos with a very chill vibe and kind workers. The tacos can come with cheese melted on the inside hot off the grill. I haven't had a one I don't like and they have a variety of flavors. They have fun drinks both alcoholic and not, the place is 1/3 inside and 2/3 outside patio. This is a small taco stand with only about two tables inside and the rest of the seating is outside in the front or on the side patio. Many of the tables have umbrellas which was fortunate as there was off-and-on rain the day we visited. The street tacos are near perfect, although I wish they gave me three lime wedges instead of cutting them in half. Also, their medium sauce has a great char-grilled flavor, but is spicy for a medium. The service was friendly and quick. The ambiance is enjoyable, especially for those that love a nice patio with flowers growing out front. My husband loved his quesadilla and said it was delicious (al pastor). Their al pastor has small chunks of pineapple in it which is a nice and fresh-tasting contrast. I love this place. Very tasty Chacos which are tacos with grilled cheese inside of the corn tortillas. My favorite things to order here are the carne asada quesadillas, potato chacos, carne asada chacos, and chicken tacos. Everything comes with a lime onion and cilantro which is such a complement to the flavor meats and veggies. I order regularly from uber eats and quality is still maintained even after the delivery process. Very filling also. For dinner just a quesadilla with any of the meats will be plenty. The awesome guava jarrito and horchata popsicle is such a refreshing meal. Short and to the point. Would not recommend at all. Lengthy explanation- Ordered carne asada and received overpriced very bland chunky pieces of steak. It was in no way authentic carne asada. The smallest lime wedges you could humanly imagine where you couldn't even squeeze them.. they were also dried out and didn't appear fresh. Bonus points to them because they are eco friendly:) What I ordered: my friends and I were out on the town that night so I ordered a Paloma and a mushroom taco (cannot remember the actual name). Let me just say this, their Paloma's will knock you on your ass so be prepared. It was so strong, but still went down smoothly. My mushroom taco has nice flavor. Their taco shells taste very fresh and homemade! (Maybe could use a little more flavor?) The workers are chill and conversational. They make great suggestions! I live in Edwardsville and have been to this place many times. I have noticed over the past year or two that their portions are horribly small. When you are spending $3.00-$5.00 on a tiny taco it wouldn't hurt to put more than 2 tablespoons of meat in them. I know prices have gone up but seriously, how much can that amount of mushrooms or chicken cost? I normally get the original margarita. It's apparent they don't make them like they used. to. This was my second time going and the experience was pretty consistent! It's a good closer to authentic Mex choice in the area. I was the only one there (other then some online orders rolling in) and I waited inside almost 30 minutes for 4 chacos and rice. (Chacos are like tacos but have cheese cooked to the shell.) Since you can see the kitchen I could tell that they were in no rush to get the food out and we're only cooking one order at a time. It was very fresh when I received it and did enjoy the Chacos, but I thought they were kind of bland. I got 3 different kinds of meat and recommend the carnitas. They are more of an only meat flavor because they only topped it with onion and I think cilantro. Overall, Taqueria Z is worth trying. But I kind of get the idea. This is probably not your place if you're looking for an average big meal, unless you're willing to spend plenty of $$. Instead, its like the perfect snack place if you know what I mean. Like after spending time studying at the library or if you've been drinking a lot at the nearby bars. So on with the review: I've had a few visits to this place and its not bad at all. The service was fine, and the cooks in the back work really hard at what they do. The menu is very descriptive, so you know what to expect. I know a lot will disagree with me on this one, but the foods are a bit pricey. But here's the thing: you're actually getting the real Mexican street food experience. Their quesadillas and tacos are great (even though I don't care for corn tortillas...), and the sauces on the table add plenty of flavor. I got the house margarita on my last visit. Aye caramba these tacos are good! During our journey across the States I got a hankering for some carnitas (aka pig) tacos. A quick search on bing led me to Z-Taco and boy am I happy. The carnitas were melt in your mouth tender and absolutely fell apart upon impact into my big mouth. I ordered 3 to start along with a grande horchata. I must say - the horchata was perfectly seasoned with cinnamon and sugar and it's creaminess coated my mouth with each sip. It balanced the hot bite of the rojo salsa that I generously poured onto my tacos. The tacos were delightful - so much so that I actually ordered another round of 4 tacos which were all consistent and lusciously loaded with tender meat. They truly warmed my soul as they made their way into my belly. One thing of note: my daughter Trina is somewhat picky when it comes to Mexican food. Unfortunately TZ does not have crunchwrap supremes on their menu and that is all my daughter will eat for some odd reason. It wasn't too big of a deal since after I got my taco fix we headed around the corner and picked up a papa Johns double cheeseburger pizza to satisfy the ladies of my life. Overall I would give this taco spot 6 stars if I could because these tacos really were quite good and the best part is they didn't upset my stomach at all.
