Chilean Sea Bass Dinner

Great to be back. It's been a while. Clean place, friendly staff, and fresh fish, YUMMY! Sharing pics of their Uni and the well known sizzling Sea Bass

I want to start by saying that the service was not bad, and our server was nice. However, the food was not good at all. The rice was extremely wet from the sauce and was falling apart, making it difficult to eat. Our fried oysters were chewy and sandy, and the salmon also tasted fishy. Unfortunately, we didn't enjoy anything we ordered. This place was a bummer because it didn't seem bad based on all the reviews we saw before visiting, but the sushi was a hard pass for us. I also wish they provided more detailed descriptions of the maki rolls, including what was on them and what ingredients were inside.

A D4 Parkside legendary sushi restaurant for 40 years. Thanks to Chef Michael and Joannna for serving our community and making sure that we had the freshest nigiri and maki rolls in the sunset/parkside. Tony at the bar alongside michael and Benjamin have been here for 2 decades too. The vibe is very "cheers" bar. Everyone knows your name. The nigiri and iron platter fish are amazing. 5 stars . jYW highly recommends !

Solid fish quality and big rolls, I'd definitely eat here again. I don't remember all of the rolls we got but everything was pretty tasty. Menu has good variety and the rolls were pretty big. Fish quality is solid and you can taste all of the ingredients. Reasonably priced, my only complaint is we tried to eat here twice before we were actually able. We tried to call ahead and they ended up being closed for some reason.

The food is very good, tasty well presented and generous. The service is excellent and they are very nice. I was going to give them a 5 but I saw some tea sediments in my tea cup. I am mentioning this so they can make sure it doesn't happen again. The place is clean and lively because of the diners. You can tell that they are regulars because they know the owners., I recommend checking this place out if you want to experience good Japanese dining , complete with green tea ice cream, miso soup and salad.

The three of us arrived tonight Sunday around 5'ish. Good thing too as people dribbled in soon after. The front dining room filled up first then the private room and the back dining room. Ordered - * both hubby & daughter went with combo A bento box. Chicken teriyaki, choice of tuna or salmon sashimi, shrimp tempura, rice and green salad. Also miso soup and scoop ice cream for dessert. Either green matcha or strawberry. * I ordered the ling cod dinner special. It's served on a sizzling hot plate with a big mound of sauté bean sprouts. Also miso soup and scoop ice cream. Our food came quickly once we placed our orders. Everyone enjoyed the food. BTW - We would like to place to go orders. But every time I call the phone rings and rings. I asked our server why no one ever answers the phone on to go orders. He said all calls are picked up. He said keep trying. I called from our table while there. Sure enough he picked up. Going forward I'll see if the call is answered. Being a neighborhood restaurant we tend to see someone we know. Tonight was no different.

I'm going to this place for years, to my own surprise -- I'm finally writing a review! About two weeks ago, I ended up there spontaneously with someone who wasn't sure about the quality of the food and didn't even know where we were going. But he was pleasantly surprised! He absolutely loved the service and was very impressed with the quality of the fish , and I know his restaurant standards are quite high-end. We ordered a lot of different dishes, and he was especially thrilled with the grilled Chilean sea bass. We also had my longtime favorite "the oyster shots " and they were just perfect. As always, the chef was so generous and welcoming. Thank you again, and I'm sure I'll be back soon. It was also such a pleasure to see Benjamin!

The wife and I where driving around Taraval st. Seeing what was going on since all the street work. Pleased to say that it's a much smoother ride, loss of a lot of street parking. Change is inevitable. But the business is a nice place to have dinner. Was packed for a weekday. Service was fast and friendly. Food was on point. Looked like a family restaurant. But I was able to engage with conversation with the workers because they were busy. Which isn't a bad thing. We will definitely come back and try more on the menu.

Came here with my girlfriends, a group of six, and tried this place out. Upon entering there is seating available in the front with smaller tables for a group of 2-3 people per group. In the back is seating for larger groups. They post their daily specials on a blackboard near the bar. The owner/manager seated us in the back. We ordered a few appetizers, and shortly thereafter our entrees. They have vegan menu items available. We proceeded to order our entrees, and we didn't wait too long for everything to be served. Food was good, but not great. They put too much bean sprouts on some of the entrees which wasn't to my liking. All in all, it was a pleasant experience.

All the sushi rolls are huge & taste delicious. The Bento combos are delicious too. Ive been coming here for over 20yrs & this is still my all time favorite sushi restaurant. See you again soon.

Chilean sea bass

This place is a long-time favorite of ours. We like to come here for the fish entrees, especially the Chilean sea bass. The fish comes out on sizzling platter over a bed of sauteed veggies, mainly beansprouts. For under $25, you get two pretty solid pieces of fish along with a bowl of rice. The other dishes such as the sushi and other entrees are average. Service is consistent and fast. The restaurant itself could use a remodel, fresh paint and flooring would really spruce up the place. Parking can be difficult since it is on Taraval surrounded by a residential neighborhood.

Miso soup with baby cockroach

Been here many many times since childhood. Glad to see the neighborhood restaurant thrive through tough times, but quality and sanitation should NOT be compromised. I can understand quality, a baby cockroach in our miso soup is the last draw for us coming back.

Ask the Community - Taraval Okazu Ya Restaurant

Does your fish platter travel well? How does it taste 30 minutes later? With Covid, I do not eat inside restaurants.

Id suggest just bringing a cooler with you

Are they open called 2x but no answer?

Parents ordered the bento boxes - they enjoyed them. The fried oysters were good. Kiddo wanted steak, so he ordered the Beef Amiyaki which was served on a sizzling plate and served with miso, salad, and rice. He ate it all up so I'm assuming he liked it. Other kiddo had a craving for udon so she was satisfied. While everyone else received their order, it took a while for the Chirashi I ordered to arrive. The staff were busy, so it took a minute to flag one down to ask for my order. Took about another 15 minutes for my order to arrive. Usually, in my experience, the Chirashi is an assortment of fish on a bed of sushi rice. Here, I was told I could pick 2 fish. If I went with the large Chirashi - 3 fish. Not quite the assortment I was expecting, although the Hamachi and Sake were both good.

Service: We happened to get here fairly early and got seating at the bar right in front of the owner, which the restaurant is named after - Zentarou. We ordered a grilled whole squid and an omakase set with the server. I'm not sure the etiquitte about ordering at the bar vs server when ordering sushi, but it wasn't an issue. We also just got water and they are very prompt at refilling, which was nice. Food: Grilled squid - served with a lemon wedge and mayo sauce, you get a whole squid, grilled and sliced. The squid is tender with a snap when you bite into it. The flavor was mild and I didn't feel the lemon was needed when paired with the mayo. Omakase Sakizuke - 1. seaweed salad - light and refreshing and the perfect amount of bites 2. a chilled seaweed soup - mildly flavored shot of soup 3. squid broth - flavorful and bright - the trio was a perfect way to start a meal Otsukuri - I forgot to ask what kind of fish we had for the sashimi, but it was two pieces of mild fish that was pre-prepped with accoutrements, so no soy or other additives were needed Nigiri - I did a terrible job of documenting the 5 nigiri pieces in the first and second set, but I'll just tell you that each one had very distinct flavors that chef Zen paired wonderfully. Not only was the fish super fresh, but each bite melted in your mouth and was beautifully presented on the plate. (Please refer to all the pictures for the food) Chawan-mushi - I am absolutely in love with steamed egg, and this is no exception. I will say that this particular one was a little bit cooked more than my personal liking. It didn't have that jello-like texture that's smooth and jiggly. It was nice and hot and the flavors melded together wonderfully. Suimono - the fish broth to end the omakase was lovely. Very light and fragrant without being overpowering and salty. It was bright and felt cleansing to bring the meal together. Zen was really selling the wagyu nigiri and my friend was still hungry and really wanted it, so we sprang for it and it did not disappoint. It was buttery smooth with gold leaf to top it. I could have eaten five of these. TL;DR - ambiance was good, service was wonderful, food was delicious. Would highly recommend, but make reservations. We got lucky with an early walk in at the bar, but when we left, there was a huge line out the door.

I think its because I got one of the cheaper tastings and we also got rolls, maybe the fish quality is better for the omakase or more pricey tastings? Not sure. But I didn't love it. The casual take out place near my house, fish in the box, blows this out of the water. Still a good experience all around!

For first-time visitors, I'd recommend ordering a couple of maki rolls to get a feel for what they do. We tried the salmon and tuna maki, and both were buttery, fresh, and practically melted in our mouths. The spicy tuna roll was also delicious with just the right amount of heat. My only critique is the rice. It didn't have that classic premium short-grain sushi rice texture I'm used to. It reminded me a bit more of steamed rice, which took away from an otherwise very enjoyable roll. A special shout-out to Katelyn for her warm and friendly service. She made us feel welcome from the moment we walked in. We were also served a pot of hot loose-leaf tea that was rich, full-bodied, and the perfect way to end the evening. Overall, fresh fish, friendly service, and a relaxing atmosphere. If they fine-tuned the sushi rice, this would easily be a five-star experience. We'll definitely be back to explore more of the menu.
