We tried takeout again but find dining in several times a year to be a better choice especially when ordering a tempura dish. The tempura batter loses the crispness by the time you get the food home after pick up. We got 2 combos. Mine was tuna sashimi, shrimp and veggie tempura and teriyaki chicken. The shrimp was a skinny piece of prawn, hardly any meat but well battered. Veggies were OK. Teriyaki chicken was chunks of meat, almost cubed. I do like that they placed the rice for the 2 combos in a separate box and the miso soup for 3 into one large plastic container instead of separate containers. They did the same for the ice creams. The green tea ice cream didn't have any tea flavor to it though. The other combo was Teri chicken, tonkotsu and beef. Hubby got the mixed tempura. read more

Their food is fast and solid, i just wish for their sauce to not be pouring on the chicken making it extremely salty at the takeout. For those not craving the sauce, the food by itself is sufficient. I usually do take outs. Their physical restaurant is not that big and can get busy on weekends. They don't have more than two staffs at one time, I usually see one and he's been around for ages. I vaguely remembered their oyster sake shooter, which is good, especially if you need some strong, quick fixes. I want to start by saying that the service was not bad, and our server was nice. However, the food was not good at all. The rice was extremely wet from the sauce and was falling apart, making it difficult to eat. Our fried oysters were chewy and sandy, and the salmon also tasted fishy. Unfortunately, we didn't enjoy anything we ordered. This place was a bummer because it didn't seem bad based on all the reviews we saw before visiting, but the sushi was a hard pass for us. Solid fish quality and big rolls, I'd definitely eat here again. I don't remember all of the rolls we got but everything was pretty tasty. Menu has good variety and the rolls were pretty big. The three of us arrived tonight Sunday around 5'ish. Good thing too as people dribbled in soon after. The front dining room filled up first then the private room and the back dining room. Ordered - * both hubby & daughter went with combo A bento box. Chicken teriyaki, choice of tuna or salmon sashimi, shrimp tempura, rice and green salad. Also miso soup and scoop ice cream for dessert. Either green matcha or strawberry. * I ordered the ling cod dinner special. It's served on a sizzling hot plate with a big mound of sauté bean sprouts. Also miso soup and scoop ice cream. Our food came quickly once we placed our orders. Everyone enjoyed the food. BTW - We would like to place to go orders. But every time I call the phone rings and rings. I asked our server why no one ever answers the phone on to go orders. He said all calls are picked up. He said keep trying. I called from our table while there. Sure enough he picked up. Going forward I'll see if the call is answered. Being a neighborhood restaurant we tend to see someone we know. The portion sizes are amazing! It was quite a while before we were served, but the restaurant was completely busy so it's understandable for a smaller business. Regardless, their team was nice and as quick as possible. They also checked in once we received our food to make sure we enjoyed it. About two weeks ago, I ended up there spontaneously with someone who wasn't sure about the quality of the food and didn't even know where we were going. But he was pleasantly surprised! He absolutely loved the service and was very impressed with the quality of the fish , and I know his restaurant standards are quite high-end. We ordered a lot of different dishes, and he was especially thrilled with the grilled Chilean sea bass. We also had my longtime favorite "the oyster shots " and they were just perfect. The wife and I where driving around Taraval st. Seeing what was going on since all the street work. Pleased to say that it's a much smoother ride, loss of a lot of street parking. Change is inevitable. But the business is a nice place to have dinner. Was packed for a weekday. Service was fast and friendly. Food was on point. Looked like a family restaurant. Came here with my girlfriends, a group of six, and tried this place out. Upon entering there is seating available in the front with smaller tables for a group of 2-3 people per group. In the back is seating for larger groups. They post their daily specials on a blackboard near the bar. The owner/manager seated us in the back. We ordered a few appetizers, and shortly thereafter our entrees. They have vegan menu items available. We proceeded to order our entrees, and we didn't wait too long for everything to be served. Sushi is already great here. Their california roll is one of the best I've had, and their other rolls are good too. We've had tuna, salmon, and yellowtail and everything always comes out fresh. The restaurant itself is a little worn down, we typically get take out from this restaurant and eat at home. When we do eat there, service is always great. Great value here as well. read more

This place is a long-time favorite of ours. We like to come here for the fish entrees, especially the Chilean sea bass. The fish comes out on sizzling platter over a bed of sauteed veggies, mainly beansprouts. For under $25, you get two pretty solid pieces of fish along with a bowl of rice. The other dishes such as the sushi and other entrees are average. Service is consistent and fast. The restaurant itself could use a remodel, fresh paint and flooring would really spruce up the place. What outstanding service. We are visiting from Southern California but used to live in SF before kids and knew we needed to get sushi from Taraval. This time, we came with two kids (6 yr old and 1.5 yo) and omg not only was the food delicious but the attention to our family despite fussy toddler was out of this world. They really helped make it an enjoyable meal when it's stressful enough to get out of the house with kids. We truly are appreciative of everyone there. This place will forever have a place in our hearts. The food! Tempura lightly fried - delicious! Salmon teriyaki for the kids: toddler grabbing handfuls and shoveling it into his mouth! Service is always friendly and they try their best to stay on top of all the orders. CA Roll: always good and made with real crab! Yin Yang roll: this is my favorite roll here. I sub the black/green tobiko it comes with to just orange regular tobiko because the other colors stain my tongue. It's got a little bit of a kick and has squid/uni. Because of the uni it's MKP, which can get expensive (~$20). 49er roll: love this roll! I wish they took the seeds out of the lemons, but love the tang the slices give on top of the roll. Inside is always packed with salmon. Caterpillar roll: always topped with tons of fresh avocado, very tasty if you like unagi Overall, such a great casual eatery. Just what we needed to fill our stomach. The customer service was good, waiter was a young guy, he was attentive and made sure we were taken care of. Ambiance was spacious. We order the X Men Roll, Cal Bear Roll, and the Dragon Maki. Out of the sushi rolls I tried, the Cal Bear Roll was my favorite because it contains BOTH crab and eel meat, which is a combo I don't see often I sushi! The Cal Bear Roll is pictured in the front on the plate with 2 rolls. I'd recommend this place! I've visited Okazu Ya several times, each visit was a different experience. The first 2 visits were for lunch/ early dinner. The 3rd visit was a different, later in the evening. Maybe I just got there at a good time, what a treat! A full fledged party of neighborhood strangers having a hell of a good time with the restaurant employees! Absolutely wonderful experience ! I've returned since then and haven't had such a good time, regular business atmosphere, not that is a bad thing just not as good as dinner time. I think I might have just got lucky when everyone was in sink ( employees, staff & customers ) . Food is excellent however I think the portions could be a little bit more. It's fun to see & experience a restaurant that can have fun with their customers & work well together with the staff/ employees . Both are a great value, have large portions, and come with ice cream! Sushi rolls are always fresh and a good size. A must get is the pumpkin roll and if you like cilantro get the snake roll. The chicken was standard and the other two were good. However, was no carrot or broccoli in the tempura. We also got the beef teriyaki and this was quite salty and cooked rare.
